So I was wondering if anyone completed their AA degrees at a community/state college and then transferred to a university for their bachelors? Prior to applying to dental school and got accepted?

I'm probably not the example you're looking for, but I spent two years at a CC and took 100 credits worth of classes (out of all the classes, only 3 were relevant to dental school - 2 English classes and gen chem), enough for an AA, but I didn't get one. I applied to uni and took 4 years to get a BS.

Came up during an interview that I had a "lot of credits", but I explained it, and we moved on.
Result: accepted.

I'm sure there are others who have taken the CC route for various reasons, but I'm sure as long as you take the majority of your science classes (pre reqs and upper div) at a uni, you will be fine.

Wow so how many years of undergrad in total did you spend?

Two at a CC, four at a uni. Catch is that I was part of a high school dual credit program. But that shouldn't matter in terms of application to dental school.

I did every single one of my prerequisite at a community college except for biochem and microbio.
Result: 6 predecember interviews and 3 acceptances on dec 2nd
And no I am not URM

Awesome, I guess there is hope then. I always felt like it would be down fall having CC. What is URM? and where did you get accepted?

Ok awesome! So you still got the 4 year uni experience and I have heard a lot of dental schools appreciate 4 years at a university. Not sure if thats true.

I completed two years at a CC and took around 63 credits there, including gen bio 1, gen bio 2, gen chem 1 and gen chem 2, and then transferred to a university with a full ride scholarship there

and i got accepted to my top choice 🙂

Awesome congrats to you! 🙂 I am always curious to know how old everyone is? I took a break and I turn 21 this month I won't finish my 60+ credits for another year and a half probably.

You are very young going into dental school, even bigger congrats! lol
Lol thank you there are younger students than me going into dental school, around 20-21

Accepted to my state school ,lecom, and Detroit mercy.

Urm- under represented minority.
Most sdn people think you must be a urm to get into dental school with cc prereqs or low stats.

Ah I see. Whats the deal with LECOM? Do they have good professors and stuff? I guess its new and not ranked high?

LECOM is a brand new school and I literally lost interest after attending the interview lol.. I also found out that they don't do waxing or have cadavers for
Anatomy and that further confirmed my decision not to attend

Oh that sounds terrible. I am from florida, and it seems the only most reputable dental school is UF here. Nova I have heard isn't all that great either.

I interviewed at nova and didn't feel good about the school either. I heard rumors about not having enough chairs for students...
I guess the interviewers are able to judge your level of interest during your interview( I got waitlisted)

They do, I believe most, if not all, prefer to have prereqs done at a 4 year institution.
And I'm 22. 😛 but don't worry about your age. The average age of students is around 25 (from what I've seen).

Yeah so I am a pedo assistant, and I have seen their interviews at my office because its through UF residency in Naples. They do base it on if you're interested in the school for sure.

Yeah I will be about 25 when I finish my bachelors. If I continue doing what I should be on track.

I am 23 btw
Pretty young too!

I got my AA went to a university for 1 year and now I had 5 pre December interviews 2 acceptances and 1 wait list ( I'm a no bachelors applicant) I'm 23 and will have 145 credits after next semester. If I had stayed to get my degree I would've had close to 180 credits

Oh thats interesting. I didn't know you couple apply without a bachelors. Where did you get accepted/wait listed? and is it common for people to not get bachelors?

Last I saw it was only like 40 in the nation that get accepted so I'm def the exception. I got accepted to UNLV and Midwestern-AZ and waitlisted for Marquette. I also had interviewed at Roseman and UW. Still hoping I get a call from UW one of these days (they take their time accepting people).

Ah sweet. Congrats! I guess UW is one of the better schools? Do you plan on a residency?

Yeah it's a great and inexpensive school because I'm a WA resident. I've also applied for the navy hpsp scholarship and if I get that I'll go to Midwestern cause their clinic is amazing!

Yeah that is definitely a good plan if it's in your state. Hopefully they accept you!

I am at a cc and I will have most of my prereqs done by the end of this school year. I plan on starting at a university next fall and entering into dental school at almost 24 years old. I put off school for a 2 years and went back for dental assisting. I just turn 21 too. I'm hoping to be in the class of 2020.

I got my associate of science from a cc and transferred to a university where I am spending this year completing my bachelors which has been 3 years in the making there. I got accepted to my top choice with a 3.65 ogpa and 21 AA

Awesome good work. I have been an assistant for almost 3 years now. May be in advantage in the future since i've done sedations, pedo and ortho.

Thats great! Which school was your top choice?

Southern Illinois University. Its a good price being my state school and it has a good reputation for producing well rounded dentists.
