Hi guys,

I spent 6 years of my life living in a small town in Florida where I would consider a healthcare underserved community. It is not a big city so docs and dentists and other kinds of service were not easily accessible. However, this city is peaceful, and I love the atmosphere. The community has nurtured me and gave a chances to be who I am today. That is why I want to serve in these kinds of areas when I got out of dental school. It gives me a sense of responsibility. I know some of you guys would pick the same options, I was just curious to see more inputs....Anything is welcome here, pros and cons so feel free.

I'd also like to work in a small, underserved community for the reasons you stated. Two cons that have bugged me recently are that it limits your spouse's employment opportunities: my husband's job is pretty much only found in a big city. Another thing that my interviewer brought up when I mentioned this desire, and hadn't completely thought of before, is that the types of services you'd be providing might be more limited, although I think this would depend on the community. I'd love to hear some more pros though!

Nice, thanks for the input. As a matter of fact, I did think of the cons you just said. About the limited services that you can provide, I think he meant your line of service would be more treatment type rather than preventative type. I guess it would tailor according to the community you serve in. Interesting point worth talking about.
