Hey guys! I am a Missouri resident, and have been accepted to MOSDOH and UNE
School 1: University of New England (UNE)
Pros:

My long-term goal is to become a pediatric dentist and eventually practice in southeastern Missouri. Because of that, MOSDOH is appealing due to its location in Missouri, proximity to family, and potential opportunity to build professional connections in the state.
However, my wife currently works in communications/public relations, and we feel that Portland/Boston may offer significantly better career opportunities for her than Kirksville. This has become one of the biggest factors in our decision.
Financially, once housing and living expenses are considered, the overall cost difference between the two schools is only about $1000.
I am also trying to determine whether UNE's earlier clinical exposure (starting in D2) or MOSDOH's larger patient pool and clinical system would better prepare me for practice and potentially pediatric residency.
For those familiar with either school, which would you choose and why?
School 1: University of New England (UNE)
Pros:
- Lower cost of attendance (~$381,680 for tuition and fees over 4 years)
- Located near Portland, ME and within reach of the Boston area
- Larger job market for my wife to potentially get a better paying job
- Potentially more opportunities for my wife to maintain or advance her current career trajectory
- More amenities, activities, and things to do compared to Kirksville
- Students begin clinical experiences during D2 year
- Housing appears significantly more expensive (~$2,200/month rent)
- Much farther from family support
- Closest family would be one of my wife's aunts in Baltimore (~8 hours away)
- Would likely only see family a few times during dental school
- Much farther from where I ultimately hope to practice
- Higher overall cost of living
- Smaller clinical system and patient pool that may provide opportunities for less clinical exposure and experience treating a lower volume of patients
Pros:
- Located in Missouri, where I ultimately hope to practice
- Much lower housing costs (~$1,000/month in Kirksville and ~$1,600/month in St. Louis)
- Family in southeastern Missouri would be about 4 hours away during Kirksville years and about 1 hour away during St. Louis years
- Family in Kansas City would also be much closer
- Opportunity to build professional connections in Missouri, where I hope to eventually practice
- Lower overall living expenses
- Large clinical system and patient pool that may provide opportunities for greater clinical exposure and experience treating a higher volume of patients
- Higher cost of attendance (~$431,266 for tuition and fees over 4 years)
- Kirksville is a very small town
- Significantly fewer communications/public relations career opportunities for my wife during the first two years
- My wife is concerned that stepping into a lower-level position in Kirksville could negatively affect her long-term career trajectory
- Students do not begin clinical experiences until D3 year
