I'm having a difficult time deciding between the two. I appreciate any advice given on this!
- Both are new schools and the tuition is similar.
- s/o lives closer to UNE
- students at Touro haven't started seeing patients in the clinic yet. This makes me a little nervous, as there is no information on what their patient pool will look like.
- UNE is P/F with no ranking. I'm worried that this will be a problem if I decide to specialize down the road. I know that it's possible to specialize from P/F schools, but UNE is new so it doesn't have a strong reputation.

I really like UNE, but I don't want to close any doors on the possibility of specializing by going to a school without grades/ranking. Is this a reasonable concern? I know that quite a few students in the class of 2017 and 2018 got into specialty/residency programs, but those two years had a traditional grading system (P/F system was first implemented for the class of 2019).

I would go to UNE since the clinic is more established and your significant other is closer. P/F is not an issue if you can do well on the ADAT or CBSE(for OMFS). It will help you, if anything.

I would go to UNE, similar price, more graduates.
However for omfs specifically, A program director told me they make p/f schools send graded transcripts from schools not named ucsf ucla columbia etc. reason being they have little to no experience with their students.

Seems like UNE is the better choice for me. I have no interest in omfs, so I guess that won't be an issue. Thanks for the advice!

I don’t know much about UNE, but here’s some info to address your concerns regarding Touro:

-I see Touro’s tuition slightly rising in the next four years. Also, housing is overall expensive at Westchester country. UNE wins financially. If anything, your s/o can easily relocate and find a job with the close proximity to NYC.

-The demographic that I think will be served in the area will be either be affluent, older people or lower income immigrants. Read this article starting at page 24 to give you a really good idea what the school’s clinical layout will be.

-Touro’s grading system is better for specializing in the future, but definitely more stress during dental school. However, the Jewish holidays will give a few random day breaks throughout the year. As far as associated residency, there’s a OMFS program at the Westchester hospital associated with NYMC.
