Kelaskov, thanks for the advice. Did you happen to get the NHSC in your second year? Were you considering Military scholarships your first year? If so, I am pretty sure I met you when I came and interviewed a year ago. I sat in on a biochem class and was the only non first year in the class. Davia sat in front of me.
Anyway, I ended up going up to Maine this past weekend and found a house I fell in love with. Its at Granite Point Rd and three MS2's are currently living there. It was a beautiful house. I cant move in until after Labor Day but I found out that the undergrads dont start classes until after Labor Day so I am hoping to stay in the dorms until then. If not, then it looks like I will be in a hotel most likely. Hope that everyone else is doing well. Take care.

don't count on the dorms... I've never heard of that happening, I'd plan on finding a hotel, they have one of those extended stay america places up in south portland, or ask around if any of the current first year's have a room, or maybe one of your in coming classmates would have an extra room.

Great to hear of your acceptance! I was wondering when we'dsee you again 😉. Granite Point is great, I think you'll really enjoy living there.

We're not doing the military scholarship or NHSC main scholarship rather, we did a rural health rotation through the summer NHSC/SEARCH program in Maine. We had a great time at Northern Maine Med Ctr. and the orientation included a lobster dinner in Bar Harbor 👍 . See this site for more info on the program.

Ps. Hotels/Motels are expensive in August cause of the summer tourists- you shouldn't have a problem finding a student to rent a room from/stay with. Just a thought.

Hey guys, here is a piece of an email that James Gaffney sent me:
Both the landlord and undergrads are operating on information/practice that has not been in place for three or more years. As the university welcomes more and more conferences to campus, and more and more undergrads stay on campus for the summer or return early for athletics and jobs on campus, med students have not been able to stay in the residence halls. Our official stance is, and has been for years and told at interview days and in orientation communication, is that students should secure a year-round lease. Some still try for seasonal beach housing, but are on their own to find a place until after labor day. Some stay with classmates, some rent a cheap motel room in town.

We are still working with ITS about the myUNE accounts. We were lead to believe they would be active before we included the handout in the mailing, but there were some changes in plans from that office. We should have it wrapped up shortly, and ask that you try again after the first of April.

So it seems as though we cant live on campus for August. Clears that up a little. Also, the myUNE accounts should be active fairly shortly.

On a side note, since I already have housing, I can now put out a suggestion for a few places in the area. There is a house at 1 Sea Breeze Ave in Biddeford. Its a 4BR, is 0.5 miles to the med building and 0.1miles to the beach. Its $1900 a month but can be rented year round. The listing is on the UNE website. Secondly, there is a house on craigslist for $975 for a 3BR. Lastly, anyone want to plan to get together some time in April? We can get together in Biddeford or Portland and grab some dinner and drinks? Give each other a chance to get to know each other a little as well. Write back if you are interested. Take care.

Thanks for the info, Rob. I have also secured a place to live! But I won't believe it until I sign the lease....it's a nice house about 1 mile from school, just what I was looking for! Hopefully it will work out.

And that house at 1 Seabreeze Ave on Hills Beach looks pretty nice. I drove by it (it's a big green colonial at the corner of Hills Beach Rd. and Seabreeze Ave on the left). I spoke with the owner as well--super nice guy. It's a nice find as it is able to be rented year round. It's just way to big (and a bit too pricey) for just 2 people, but would be ideal for 3 or 4 to share!

During my visit to UNECOM, I had the pleasure of eating at Buffleheads--very cute place and the food was pretty good. However, my boyfriend and I found a real gem in downtown Biddeford. A burrito joint! It's awesome. Here's the website: http://www.bebesburritos.com
Since I had a long drive home that day, I couldn't sample the margaritas, but boy, did I want to! Mmmmmm... And, they have happy hour drink and app specials, live music, and for all the singles out there they have "speed dating"! Definitely something I would have loved to try in my single days. Anyway, it seemed like a real fun place. Sorry, I get carried away when I talk about food! Can you tell I haven't had dinner yet?

Ok, I promise I will wrap this post up....one more thing....is anyone planning on attending Osteoblast on April 22nd? I hope to be visiting that whole weekend. Maybe we could get together then if there are others who will be around? Rob?

can I ask what your last post means? Did you get a packet, an offer, what exactly? I only filled out my fafsa last week...when do you think I will be getting a clearer picture of the financial future???

Also, does the school give scholarships if you have already accepted their offer into their class and on what basis? If I have not discussed scholarships with the school at this point, any hopes of getting one? I have been making between 12,000 and 19,000 dollars for 5+ yrs so I dont have anything saved....

I got my package. I submitted my fafsa in February, but it made it to the school before they evenstarted giving packages. After they download the fafsa, they'll send you their application. 2-3 weeks after you turn that in you'll get your package. Very few scholarships. If you are dedicated to primary care, especially if you are from New England, there are low-ineterest loans, so that would be the only thing to alert them to.

Don't worry about savings. yes, it's good to have some, if you can manage it. I have a bit, but nothing huge. It's not like college. Anything not covered by Stafford is covered by GradPlus and alternative. GradPlus is sort of credit based. Their "credit worthy" eval does not take into account debt:income, and is mostly looking for defaults, bankruptcy, etc. So, no sweat, you're covered. It is a bit startling to get basically a bill for $65K.
 
Unfortunately, Dave, very few scholarships. I am doing the whole thing with loans, just like most everyone else in med school. It's expensive. Look at your loan options carefully - and you can apply for Maine medloans since you're going to school in Maine (it's available to students going to school either IN MAINE or if they are Maine residents going to school anywhere in the country).

Just be really good with money - if you do the whole thing with loans, you get your loan money in the beginning of the semester and you need to make it last. They don't give you any more for the summer, so if you blow all your fall loan money you only have your leftover spring money to last you 7.5 months. Be frugal.

Congrats on getting in to medical school. I remember what that felt like last year. It April already.. and I could not wait to get started. Ahhh the good old times. Now most of us can't wait till its over (except shyrem- she is enjoying school wayyyy too much)

Again, take it easy. Enjoy your time off. ENJOYYYYYY E.N.J.O.Y. your time off. Againnnnn Have fun. Do all the things you like doing.. even watching TV... try to lose some weight.. cause you will put some one.. hehehe. Also I remember the first half of the year, is not as fun.. then it gets easier... at least we get use to it.

Find a place you like. You will need that "sweet" home to help you destress and for people like me .. study. I realized quickly after anatomy that I study best at home... and believe it or not.. on my own, with out that group study stuff. Also for some people, like me we did not absorb much from classes so we started going to only those which have attendance requirements. Make sure you pick the right roomates, the right place and right location. It makes life easier.

Sorry Dave. But from what I understand, there are ZERO scholarships for UNECOM admissions. There are some little ones for doing summer research in the summer. Zero partial, Zero tuition breaks. NOT THAT I HAVE HEARD OF.

Actually, they took all the scholarship money and gave it to the SGA yearbook fund.....what's it at now? $10,000, $15,000..??

..oh my mistake, that wasn't scholarship money- it just came from our tuition. 🙄

I don't know if this was mentioned already, but the National Health Service Corps is something to consider after residency. Depending on what discipline you enter, NHSC will repay a good portion of your loans if you work in an underserved area.

Hi all,

I found a very tiny, yet liveable single on hills beach road less than a mile from campus. It is essentially on the beach, available year round, and affordable. I think I'm going to act on it. Naturally though, I am scared to do so until I weigh ten thousand pros and cons. Does anyone have any wisdom on whats good and bad about living alone?
 
for some .. living alone is piece of mind.
However living with others in your class can be helpful when it comes to studying and sharing info. Unless you are a friendly person and you will make lots of friends in the class that are willing to work with you.

If you don't want the place.. tell others about it.. that way they can take a look at it.
 
hi everyone, i haven't posted since my acceptance back in december but i just wanted to introduce myself officially. i graduated in 2002 from holy cross in worcester, ma and worked in a couple labs after graduation and got a masters at bu in 2004. i'm currently working for the new england organ bank as a tissue recovery tech. i can't wait to get started and meet everyone. by the way, how many red sox and patriots fans do we have in the class?

Definitely getting excited for Orientation/classes. Gary- big time Sox fan here! Anyone else a huge Pats/Sox fan in our class?

I second Kelasov's recommendation. I recently signed the lease for Adrienne's place, and I highly recommend it! It's very classy, ideal for studying, and there's even a digital piano/keyboard for those of you who play. It's really nice, and I believe the studio is available.

Any St.A's grads in the mix? I graduated in 2003, and am completing my master's at Tufts med, while doing research in a Cardiovascular Nutrition laboratory. Love running, and thinking of getting a UNECOM Marathon 2008 team going. Would anyone be interested? I've done Boston twice, and thinking of tackling it again if I have the time.

Hey all. Huge Pats and Sox fan here. I was actually living over in Scotland when the Sox won the Series. Been here every time though for the Pats. This was asked before I think, but UNECOM usually has a Flag football league, anyone up for joining?

Also, UNECOM has a club called the Clown Patch Club, based loosely on the work done by Patch Adams. Anyone who has read my signature on my posts knows that I love Patch Adams but moreso that I love the work that he and other "Clown Docs" do. After I graduated from college I even did a fellowship studying how different abnormal factors (social support, laughter, hope, faith) can affect healing. Anyone interested in joining the club for next year? I have done some work with the Clown Docs at Childrens in Boston, and have a few ideas for the upcoming year too. If you are interested, drop me a line.

Lastly, I was also planning on coming up to Maine for Osteoblast. I went last year and the day is pretty relaxed but fun. As long as we dont get another 10 inches like we did today. Anyone interested in going, would you also be interested in meeting up after for a drink or some coffee?

and I would like to preface this question with a statement that yes, I am very nervous about the loans I will be taking out and yes, I am a *****.

Question: I know you only get a certain amount of federal financial aid based on your fafsa but can you take out education loans at loan interest rates rather than doing a normal personal loan to support a more comfortable lifestyle while in school?
Reasons:
want to buy a new bed-king size please
want to buy a comfy chair for studying
want a nicer house to rent to make me, my g-friend, and my dogs happy
want a paramotor to add onto my paraglider so I can fly the coast😎

notice these are wants. I could get by on bare minimum but can I factor these into my loans...how about car payments, etc?

Dave, you are allowed to take out loans up to your cost of attendance (which for first year is about $64K). This should net you a check of about $10K at the beginning of each semester to live off of for half the year. As for whether you can take more than that - I think someone said there is a Bank of America "maximizer" loan or something like that. But I don't think you get low student loan rates, you don't get deferment, and you have to start paying immediately. More than that, I don't know.

Look, I have two kids and a husband who took a HUGE paycut to come out here with me. Our mortgage is much higher than in Colorado due to the higher housing costs. So basically, I'm paying for all my school stuff and the mortgage on a three bedroom house and a bit more. Hubby is paying for food, utilities, and medical expenses - bear in mind this is for a family of FOUR. If you are frugal there is no reason you can't do just fine.

As for car payment - depends. Are you buying a mazarati or a used chevy? One is doable. The other isn't. Look at your budget. And try this website for particulars about what's in the COA that you can take in loans. https://www.une.edu/financialaid/costscom.asp

I think she mostly focuses on Biddeford Pool and areas close to school (Hills Beach, etc.), hence, not many year round rentals, but lots of Sept-May/June type stuff if you're willing to deal with that.

In particular, she showed me a very cute furnished 1 bedroom apartment on Hills Beach Road that I fell in love with. However, my boyfriend and I decided it was a bit too small for 2 people (and it only has parking for 1 car). It would be perfect for 1 person. And, it is a year round rental, move in anytime! I think it was $800-$900/ month. It's really beautiful--ocean views and everything. If any of you guys get it, you have to promise me I can visit! I was so sad to pass it up.

Also, I went to see a bunch of apartments in town through realtor Ben Poirier...I didn't know what to expect, but they were nice. Mostly current med students live there now. We were told that things are starting to rent now, so it's not too early to find a place!

I have secured a house with my boyfriend starting June 1st (stinks, I won't even be there until July, but I didn't want to miss out on it so I had to compromise.). Will anyone else be up at school early?
 
I bet that guy does a bit of drinking with the funds he raises...
I work at a detox/addiction center and we have many a panhandler here in Boulder as our laws make it easy for them to do so...
I really can't believe anyone gives any panhandler money- about 90% of them use it to get drugs/etoh.
One guy here in boulder stands at one intersection with a sign that reads "why lie? its for beer!". I cant believe anyone gives him a dime.

that approach may cover coffee during medical school at least.

Hi, I've been doing alot of research on private loans b/c my soon-husband is also a student, but a commuter, so there are no funds from his school for living. So, we need extra since we'll need 2 cars. Anyway, here are the options I found:

BOA Maximizer, Chase Education One, Sallie Mae Tuition Answer, My Rich Uncle.

The first 3 will give you 30K. The origination fees are around 3-10%, and the interest is between 9 and 14%, on average. Obviously, a co-signer helps.

My Rich Uncle, which I think I am going with, will give you 70K(crazy crazy crazy, I can't imagine you'll need even close to that), and their interest rates and fees are a bit lower. PLus, and this is a quote, they like medical students.

All of these don't require certificationa dn the loans go straight to you.

Good info - thanks! Do I understand correctly, this wouldn't impact UNE fin aid and is deferrable. What do other people think about this option? What is the consensus - is it better to go lean from year one or take on a little more in an attempt to be prepared for those unexpected costs? I don't know about the rest of you but if I'm too lean I'm stressed and it would appear that we will have that in abundance...

They are not certified, so the school will not know. I depends on where you're at and what you're using it for. I don't really have a cosigner, so I'm taking as close to everything I forsee needing over 4 years now, and putting the future money in an interest-bearing account b/c I'm currently employed. So, I'll qualify better than I will next year. Plus, we have large upfront expenses, like cars. I don't want monthly car payments, b/c I want to avoid paying interest on a car with money accruing interest. I'd rather buy a used car outright.

So, it's really specific to you. And, yes, they are completely deferrable.

I have also received this application from the financial aid office asking me to choose a lender citibank, citizens bank, or something else I do not remeber. For those of you who filled this application, do you guys know which one is the best lender? I can not really see any direct advantages or disadvantages to any one of them?

pabdella-congrats! About housing, I think it is hard to find the non-seasonal rentals as they are trying to rent starting april and may. I want to move in july 1st so it is sort of early I have found out. Seasonal rentals are available for leasing as they are not going to be rented until sept. anyhow and the families that own them want them to sept anyhow. I dont think I can do the biddeford pool seasonal rentals myself as I have dogs (many dog unfriendly places) and b/c I want my own furniture and dont want to live on the streets for aug. I think if you believe you will find a place that is meant for you, it will come. dont stress to much

"Allow myself to introduce....myself." My wife was accepted to UNECOM earlier this year (after receiving the ASA last year). We were honestly hoping for an acceptance to Umass (I think pabdalla was in the same boat), but, alas, it is looking grim at this moment. 👎

Let me get a tad sentimental for a moment. 😳 Although she was hoping for a spot at UMass (low tuition, we wouldn't have to move, I wouldn't have to change jobs, etc.), we truly feel that UNECOM deserves her as a student since they gave her a shot and obviously believed in "her" versus "her on paper." I am sorry to say that UMass has made this process painful for us (from the interview late last year, the subsequent wait and the rejection to re-doing the process all over again a second time with a longer wait based on an earlier interview date and another possible rejection). 😕

So, here's to UNECOM for believing in the good peeps. Here's to UNECOM for existing in New England and still within driving distance to our family/friends. 👍 Now, I just have to stop crying about the 14 inches of snow that Biddeford received last week. I hope to meet some of you as her class of '11 classmates. I love the Pats and Sox. We both run and hike and I bike as well (on road). I suppose that I should buy snowshoes.

We should be starting to look for apartments/houses to rent by mid-May. I also may have to put our beloved condominium on the market (and what a terrible market it is at the moment). Cheers!
 
So, loans. Ones that have to be certified by your school can only be up to the cost of education your school allows. For us, that will mostly, if not all, be taken care of by federal loans (stafford and gradplus). So, to get more than that you need uncertified, which means it goes to you directly, and not to the school first, which then cuts you a check. If you get more certified loans than allowed, the school will send them right back and you'll never see a dime.

So, the deferment period may very, but they are all while you are in school at least half-time. Then, there may be income based options, like forbearance. However, these loans will be much smaller than the federal aggregation, so you could always defer the federal loans longer, and just pay the private loans in residency. That's my plan. Gets rid of the higher interest loans faster.
 
Sorry if I wrote it wrong. I meant origination fees, which are the costs of opening the loan that the banks pass on to you. They are financed with the lona, though make sure you ask if it is deducted or added to the principal. You could end up with less money than you expected.

I'm always up for questions, no problem. This loan crap can be tricky and annoying.

AS for apartments, the only thing I can also suggest is to not live in Biddeford, thereby avoiding some of the seasonal rental issues. But it's choose your poison by commuting. That's what I chose, in the end, and we already have a signed lease. Up to you.

I was there as an undergrad and can only say get used to it Dave. It only gets better if you try and make an appointment, do things in person and kill them with kindness. Albeit doing things in person isn't an option when you are sweating it out in Colorado. Feel fortunate that you already have this place to network and cool intelligent classmates to consult.

Regarding the lender I'm not sure this is really a big deal. From my research the interest rates were competitive, although there were some minor differences depending on how you set it up. Bottom line you are going to consolidate when this spending extravaganza is over and my understanding is that you could change companies at that time. Frankly until you sign on the line I don't see why you couldn't change sometime before school starts if it needed to come to that... two cents.
 
Look at it this way, dave... if the FA office were to recommend someone, that would be a bias and the other lenders could be... um... offended. In today's litigious society that would be a VERY bad thing.

so who did I pick? I went with THE and the maine med loan for the supplemental. And yes, as an out of state student you can still get the maine med loan (MELA) since you're going to school in the state of Maine. Go to the FA website on UNE, click on COM students, then click on the alternative loan lenders comparison orange link towards the bottom of the page - it's buried in the paragraphs down there.

I would advise you to visit each lender's website and check out their "perks". Several have calculators to help you decide which one will save you the most money in the long run. Do your homework carefully... and choose the option best for you.

and DON'T STRESS. You have time to decide. Relax. It'll all be ok. Save the stressing out for your exams in MSI year (and those of us in c/o 2010 will try to help you along. I strongly recommend SOSA reviews for anatomy). 🙂
 
Thanks Dave. I am trying to decide what to do about the rent whether to rent a year around or seasonal. I am also in the same boat as you for the lenders thing. can't seem to decide.
 
I know cueball3, umass has made the process unbearable and I just want to know whether it's a rejection or an acceptence so that I can move on with my life too. Anyhow, I am still really excited for UNECOM, it was my ultimate 2nd choice in all the schools I applied to.
 
Argh, I just got the hardware specs and I had alreayd bought a laptop several months ago with only 40G of hard drive. We need 60g. Do you think I can get away with it?
 
rgerwin, that depends on how much you plan on putting on your hard drive. I do NOT have games, I do NOT have music, I do NOt have much other stuff on here that's not for school -- and I'm at 40gig. I do have all my school notes, all the powerpoints, Golgan review, mp3 audio from classes, etc, and all the programs I need for that stuff. Frankly, since school is pretty darn much all consuming for my time (other than the time for my kids and my husband), I don't have reason for anything other than school crap on here. But I do have some extra software that is tablet specific to make my life easier.

I would quite frankly say 40 gig would probably be adequate as long as you have an external hard drive to store old course stuff on (and music, movies, anything for YOU and not school). Helpful too for extra stuff you might want for reference, like electronic dictionaries, electronic netters, etc. But it might be tight and don't plan on having music or movies on your hard drive.

I trust only 3 HD companies; Western Digital, Maxtor (owned by Seagate), & Seagate, 7200rpm is fine, 10,000rpm+ only for gamers, below 7200rpm, well I hope you like waiting lol.

80GB should be plenty for your miscellaneous storage files, backing up important data, and whatever else necessary.
 
I love external hardrives. In fact I have resorted to buying them as x-mas gifts for family and putting lots of music and pics on them.

www.buy.com and www.newegg.com are good sources for them. The link provided above is good and I agree that western digital is the way to go (done me well) but for 80 bucks only 80gigs is not that great..I think I remember seeing 250 western digital 7200rpms for like 100 bucks and 150 for 300 something gigs-
I like space for lots of music and pics so that is me...

for school and for a laptop, you may want the external hardrives that run off usb ports in terms of power (dont have a big heavy power cord that go into the wall-super nice for traveling and much lighter-seems they run slower rpms though (i think 5200?) which means you probably cant use them for movies)
