*^*UNECOM Class of 2011*^*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The link I gave, the HD is $65, not 80, didn't you see mail-in-rebate $20 off? I found her a cheap one I think. I perfer over 200GB+ @ 7,200 rpm myself, love storing media. I want to know who would need a 1,500GB (1.5TB) HD

http://www.amazon.com/Maxtor-OneTou...8?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1176357077&sr=8-3

That thing looks huge. I can just imagine someone has his/her on desk, house guest walks in and says, "why do you have a microwave on your desk?"

Side note: Expect mailing from unecom, contents

1. Academic calander

2. Form if you completed equivalent medical school courses and want exemption

3. Laptop and PDA* technical requirements, recommendations, links to discounted items from Dell and Apple.

4. One cadaver from FedEx (I would be very scared if 4. was true)

*PDA = I'm pretty sure the PDA requirement is ONLY for 3rd year medical students. I'm not positive, I'll get confirmation tomorrow.

Even if the PDA is required, I would hold off until the clinical years (MS3-4) before buying one. I found it invaluable at that point for drug information, calculations of A-a gradient, corrected serum, etc.

I have a lot of good TV recorded on my DVR (big [adult swim] fan). I don't want to lose it all when I move up to Maine (July 1st by the way). Can I store all of the recorded shows from my dvr onto an external harddrive? If so...is it easy? Anyone know how to do it? Please let me know if you do (Protease I'm lookin at you).

Also, since some of you have received info on the specs of the laptops and pdas we should get, does that mean we should start looking now? I was under the impression we should wait till school starts, and try to buy from vendors who come to the campus with special offers.

Lastly, anyone taking this distance biochem course? Its a serious pain in my ass right now...just wondered if anyone was going through the same thing.

p.s. Yanks/Giants fan...bring it

I am currently taking a biochem course too .. PIA but.. hopefully it'll be worth it..

i just picked up a dell e1505 two weeks ago.
windows vista, 2gb 667ram, 120g hd (they were offering the 120g as a free upgrade..and fell for it.. its only 5400rpm. ugh) .. good thing i have an external 80g 7200rpm at least.

256 ati x1400 vid card, opted for a glossy screen as opposed to the wuxga 🙁
3 year mechanical,defect, accidental warrenty + lojack.

$1400 + $200 warrenty.. i would've waited until the prices went down but my previous laptop died on me so i needed an upgrade asap.

----
i got the mail about the comps & pda.
i dont know a thing about PDAs.. hopefully we wont need it soon?

That Maxtor 1.5 TB HD is... insane.

Hey guys...yes, I took the distance biochem course through UNE last year. It was a pain in my bum, too! But, it was worth it...I have to say I did learn a lot and I really liked the prof. on the DVDs, Dr. Yonuschot. He said we would be well prepared for biochem at UNECOM having taken his course. Also, don't hesitate to postpone taking the final exam until you are ready if you feel you need more time...UNE is very accomodating and understanding and will let you take the time you need. I took the final with a proctor at the community college where I live and it worked out very well. Good luck!

So, I know Rob will be there.... is anyone else planning to come up that weekend? I really want to meet you guys! My boyfriend and I will be around Saturday and Sunday and will be looking for something to do Saturday night!
I hope we finally have a touch of spring weather that weekend...

Hey guys,

Thank so much for the computer help. Just to fill in the blanks we actually have a really good desktop at home,, and an external disk drive. So, nothing extra on the tablet except the software for it. So, will I need more than 40G in the actual classroom if I store old class stuff on my desktop (i.e. burn to disk, or some other kind of transfer)? It does seem at bit cumbersome to use an external hard rive in the middle of class. I can leave it in my car for outside class uses.

Agreed, I was going to take the money for the PDA but save it. Won't the PDA now be old school by 3rd year?

We'll be up in Maine officially the 18th, but I have some obligations taking me back to boston for just the 20th. I'd love to get together then!

My DVR is also 96% full, but alot of it is months old. I'm hoping I can just forget about half of it.

Personally I have no clue but fear not I found this:

Let me try to help y'all...
Forget the type, brand, and service provider for a second...

You have 3 options to transfer things from the DVR, and each provides more/less capabilities:

1) Some people are using a TV tuner card to capture the images (imagine your computer as a digital vcr). Using this method, you would be able to get Audio/Video from any source (DVD, DVR box, XBOX, PS2, Cable, etc.), but not HD, since the TV tuner card doesn't have HD input (not commercialized yet I think).

Pros: It works really easily and universally. You will have a guide that tells you what to do once you buy the tuner.
Cons: You need to buy a TV tuner card if you don't have on, and it needs to support at least MPEG2 (DVD) to have high quality (check woot.com often, they sell 'em for ~ $20). *Note: MPEG4 is better, and after ripping to Vxid, DivX, and such you save space tons of space for a lil' loss of quality). Also, unless you are recording in real time, transferring files means RE-recording them. (Sequential Recording: 120min of video means 120min waiting time.) And no matter what, you will never get HD video this way, unless the TV tuner has HD input.

2) Others, like me, are trying to hack (hack = getting into the box; not illegal!) into the dvr cable box using either Usb2.0, Firewire, Smartcard, etc ... It's anyway of getting into the memory (the 120gb/160gb thingy in your DVR)... try google, and search for "your_brand_here firewire hack" or "your_box_here usb access" or so.

And here, you have 2 sub-options?:

a) Record live programs or old recording from the DVR using the firewire, just like you did with the TV tuner. (Same setup, but only a firewire cable needed). You will only have Read Access (you can only see the files, but you can't erase nor put new files into the DVR). This is all most of you want btw...

or

b) But since you already need a computer for this, why not go ahead and have Read/write Access right? (going a step further now though...) This allows you to transfer downloaded videos from your PC to your DVR, and erase old recordings/files, which is very useful since you save storage (linux/programming experience required, but it's really not that hard). I'm not explaining this because any person capable of running linux/programming should know how to do this without help.

Pros: It's free if you have the cables. Data transfer is faster, since it's non-sequential. If saved as HD video, you could see them in your laptop as HD, and if you get to access the Hard Disk from your computer, you will have a Virtual Media Center which will allow playback from downloaded files. You can also manage your recorded content which allows for more recording time.

Cons: You will need help (and probably no one will help you) so you really need to know your ****. Firewire cable required, Linux and programming knowledge may be needed. Also, you will need a higher Firmware than 7.10. Contact your Service provider for an upgrade. (This info is somewhere in a sticker around your DVR cable box)

3) A friend of mine here in college (PhD student ECE fellow) hooked up his cable box to the house network using a Ethernet port (his box came with one), and was able to hack into the box using the router-Ethernet access. He uses the box as Storage, Media Player, and TV broadcast system (he watches live TV anywhere he is since his connection is so fast). I don't know how to do this, but I do know it's possible, so anyone is welcome to post how. This transfers at roughly 1gbit connection running on a T3... so that’s like a fiber optic connection. And with simple DSL he gets HD anywhere. Erm... sweet huh?

Just for a legal reference, the only illegal action you can commit from doing all this is illegally sharing recorded programs. The next link is mentioned only as a reference on how to transfer recordings from your DVR to your computer (using DCT6412/DCT3412 and Windows XP) and then how to save recorded programs. Even if you don't have this specific box, look at it, and understand it, and see the required steps... All boxes will need something similar.

http://replayguide.sourceforge.net/dct6412/ <--- Comcast in Atlanta, GA

So, that's how you do it. Specifics are up to you, and some people here might help. So now try posting only your cable box model and maybe someone can help you hack into it, if that's what you want. Or ask for a good TV tuner Card. And no more "how to do this" questions; everything should be clear now

umm...yeah I might just steal my cable box

hey guys, thanks for all the great financial aid and computer info. for all the computer people in here, what do you think about tablet pc vs. mac vs. regular pc? my girlfriend has a mac that i like but i like the thought of having a fancy new tablet pc. i'm just worried that the novelty of the tablet will wear off and i'll go back to pen and paper after a few weeks.
rob, definitely count me in for flag football. i'm a big baseball guy too so if there's a softball league in the spring i'd be in for that too.

Tablets will cost around $500 more than a laptop of the same specs. Majority of people are still using laptop. The advantages of tablets is most come with organizing software for your lecture notes and people love to edit power points on it. But I find starring at a tablet screen for hours studying power points and lecture notes tires eyes quicker than paper. Shyrem will tell you she loves her tablet, so if you want one, speak to her.

Laptops:
Macs are good laptops, because they use Mac OS, you don't need antivirus, popup blockers, and it comes with a built in firewall. Also you can use windows on your Mac, but be warned, using windows exposes you to viruses, popups, etc, so you would need antivirus protection and firefox, don't use internet explorer.

However, macs don't let you customize too much, your restricted to a 5,200rpm HD, it comes with built in intel video card into the motherboard, built in audio. If you like playing games such as World of Warcraft, using mac is not the best idea.

Laptops (excluding macs) are cheaper than a macbook and you can use one with much higher specs. However, macs have good customer support should you need it, while PC support sucks. If you plan on getting non mac laptop, Dell is a good choice and so is Lenovo (IBM), stick with the R60 series models.

There is another solution, I don't know if you'll like it, but you can get a laptop and run it on Linux OS. For distributors; if beginner there is Freespire and for advanced Suse.

Good Luck.

sounds like a certain enzyome i know will be getting a mac

I love my tablet to the point that right now our pathology notes are all handouts on paper. I'm scanning them into my computer because I never have paper with me and I keep forgetting to bring those stupid pieces of paper they handed out. I lose paper - it gets messy, I tear the holes and it falls out, etc. My tablet doesn't lose pages, has infinite colors on the same "pen", and never runs out of ink or paper. I see everyone running to the library to print out powerpoint files so they can take notes and draw on them. I draw directly on the screen on my computer and have less stuff to cart around with me.

I find my eyes are less tired on the screen mainly because when I've been studying so long my eyes are a little cross-eyed I can zoom in and make the type larger, taking any strain off my eyes. Or I can change the screen from black type on white page to white type on black page. Best of all, my dogs don't chew up my notes. 🙂

After having a tablet, would I EVER go back to paper? Not if I can possibly help it. Would I EVER go back to a "regular" laptop? HECK NO. Worth every single solitary penny extra I paid for this puppy. You may want to wait for a laptop, tho - many places have "back to school sales" in June and July.

First off...thanks for the history lesson cueball (hahah is this gonna start this early? I guess its my own fault)

Second...a simple yet very significant question: What happens if your tablet breaks? I don't know too much about tablets right now, but I wonder even if you were to have been safe and saved your files onto an external harddrive, is it still not possible to view most your saved info (notes, powerpoints, etc.) until you've acquired another tablet? (the obvious dilemma there of course being cost). Let me know...

Lastly, I'm all in for flag football and whatever other sports/activities we can arrange. I'm sure we'll all need those stress relievers.

by the way..."broughten?" I hope that you are not using a line from "bring it on" in vain. That is, after all, one of my favorite movies, second only to "You got served." This means war cueball, this means war.

All joking aside, I feel compelled to state that I spent 4 years at UVM during the dynasty of the Patriots. Then, in my final year, those assbags the Red Sox had to go and win a world series (you don't need me to cite how long it had been since the last). It was a very difficult time in my life. As you can imagine, knowing I am returning to the lion's den, my defenses are up already. I gotta say though, UVM was my first choice for undergrad, and UNECOM was my first choice for med school, so maybe I am just a masochist at heart.

I'll see you on the battlefield cueball, along with several others I'm sure.

I do have an external hard drive that I back my tablet to. All files are saved. However, I did have a problem with the screen... and there happens to be an authorized Lenovo repair center in Portland. I called them with the diagnosis of the problem (I'm really pretty darn good with computers), they ordered the part, and the next day (yes, the part came OVERNIGHT) I drove 20 miles to Portland, dropped off my tablet, had my nails done and a nice light lunch, then picked my tablet back up and was off and running. A 1.5 hour fix time. 2 hours 15 minutes if you include the drive to and from. No problem. And yes, the notes, drawings, highlights were all completely viewable on my desktop at home the night I was waiting for the part. Now I will say a classmate had a problem with her Lenovo non-tablet and sent it to IBM for repair. FOUR WEEKS LATER she finally got it back. Had she taken it to Portland, she probably would have had it back in a couple of days.

So I guess the answer to your question is: I'm smart and backup my tablet on a regular basis, the notes are still viewable on other computers, and there's an authorized Lenovo repair center 20 miles away. I don't know if there's an authorized repair center for any other manufacturer nearby, tho.

Hey I got accepted to UNECOM on March 8. I had no idea that there was a class thread on here. I'm excited to meet all of you!! A question for any current student out there....can you tell me a little more about preceptorships....like where you can do them, in what areas, in hospitals or just doctors' offices?? Thanks for the info!! I am a huge red sox/Pats fan. Lived in New England my whole life. Go Sox! 🙂

Dude/dudette:

Not a current student. If you are referring to the 3rd and 4th years, it depends on the site. For third year you do rotations at a core site. For 4th year, the sites are of your choice. You set up the rotations, so you can do them at many different locations.

If you are referring to 1st and 2nd year, students go out to different doctor's offices (at least I did). It was neat. I also did some extra time at one of the local ED (Emergency Departments) since I had a strong interest in Emergency Medicine. You can also do some extra time in some of the clinics or physician offices as you are inclined.

I hope I haven't confused you too much. Let me know if I can provide clarification.

thanks....I was referring to 1st and 2nd years in particular. Can you request to do preceptorships in specific areas that you are interested in....for example maybe in a hospital NICU or pediatric surgery or something? Just curious about how the whole thing worked really...new to me. Thanks....and that would be dudette. 🙂 Muchos gracias

Scalpel, for the first year you're pretty much going where they tell you. You get two FP, one ER/urgent care, one optometry workshop, two videotapings with simulated patients, special needs, oh, I'm sure i'm forgetting a few.

Second year I think you do more... but I'm still an MSI so that's supposition on my part. I know we just filled out a form with "special request" preceptorships including surgery, anesthesia, foot/ankle ortho, pain management, peds, women's health, alternative medicine, and a host of other interesting areas. We'll see what next year brings.

And as wook said, you can always volunteer in the ED here in Biddeford on weekends. There's a sign up sheet by the preceptor office for open spots.

ok thanks....I just was curious about the options open to the students.

So I don't if I've officially introduced myself yet. I was accepted March 8 but had no clue that this page existed. So here I am finally. UNECOM class of 2011!!!!! I am adding myself to the list...

So I am trying to update this list a little bit. There have been a few people enter the class and a few people leave from this list so here it is as far as I can tell. Lets try to get as many people updated as we can. Hope to see a bunch of you next weekend at Osteoblast. Also, if people have AIM or Yahoo names, drop them on the list too. Take care.

Alla, I didnt add you to facebook people because you were already on the list of people here. The facebook people were people who I couldnt put a name to here on the SDN listing. And of course we are friends. I mean, we got the next two+ years together, we cant start off on a bad note now can we? Take care.
-Rob

PS, you going to Osteoblast next weekend?

Hello all,

My wife (Eva - who is just finishing up her 3rd year at UNECOM) and I are looking for housemates for next year. Our house is about 8 minutes from campus in a nice residential area and has a nice yard with a deck overlooking a private backyard. We have two upstairs bedrooms available (17' x 16' and 17' x 13') that have big closets as well as a shared coat closet. We share the kitchen which has plenty of space for everyone's food and dishes. The upstairs bedrooms share a bathroom. We have off-street parking, laundry, wireless high-speed internet, and a really nice home theater system - you know, in case you are ever finished with your studying 🙂. We also have a housekeeper who comes every two weeks and the smaller bedroom is wired for DirecTV. We are looking for people who are friendly, respectful, neat, and value a good home study environment. Non-smokers only and no uncaged pets please. Rent is $530/month which includes all utilities, the internet, and unlimited long distance phone. If you are interested, PM me or email me at [email protected] and I will send you pictures of the house and all the rooms as well as a phone number where we can be contacted.

Cabot (and Eva)

welcome rocket!! I only just started here recently too. Great to start meeting new people!

Rob,
No hard feelings, I was just kidding around. I know you just wanted my facebook frienship all to yourself; I can understand.

Sad to say that I will not be able to attend Osteoblast, I suppose I will have to wait till next year. Let us know how it is--from what I gather it seems like a good time.

And hello to scalpel and rocket, nice to meet you!

I was wondering what is a good range of prices to pay for rent? if anybody has a clue, please let me know. Thanks guys

Does anyone know details on the palm tx? I'm pretty sure it is not a phone on top of everything else, but do you still need to pay for a service to use it online? I would prefer a pda that has a phone built in...anyone recommend one that has all the UNE minimum requirements and has a phone built in?

Hey Alla, so you and Vlad both come from Bklyn! Excellent! I used to live in Bayridge right by the 69th Street Pier. I miss that place...

Hey Shodddy...another Cape Codder, yay! I grew up in Barnstable and I live in Mashpee now. I work in the Radiology Dept at CCH now---will you be doing any clinicals there?

i have the palm tx, and it is NOT a phone. Without a modem built it, you can't actually dial out on it, but you can connect anywhere there's unsecured wireless internet with the built in wifi. I know lots of people that have a pda with built in phone, but when I was looking you still couldn't have your cell phone turned on in all parts of a hospital and I didn't want that restriction on my pda use. Also, most pda/phone combinations have very small screens. I recommend you go play with them everywhere you can get your little fingers on one.

i've heard studies that say cell phones don't interfere with most hospital equipment, but you still see signs at hospitals everywhere saying "turn off all cell phones because they interfere with equipment". Anyone know anything about that for more information on that?

Hey Kristin,

I'm actually closer to the Brighton Beach area; can't keep me away from the water 🙂 . I work in the Bay Ridge area though. How long did you live there?

Hey Shyrem,

Good call with the Palm TX, its a great gadget. Not a big fan of the Blackberry or Treo for med school. Seriously, who wants to pay $40 a month for a stupid data plan when theres WiFi on campus, at least, I assume theres WiFi at UNE. AMSA has a special price for the TX with membership, and I believe they give out a bunch of free software. Not sure if their price is quite competitive with buy.com or newegg, but the software is a nice perk. Also, i just joined the Tablet bandwagon, purchased the newer version of your X41, the X60 from Lenovo, looks off the hook!

As per Cell phones in the hospital, I think it's just a matter of whos around. In the ED where I work, ppl are on cell phones all the time, the rule is really just used as an excuse to kick someone out when they are disruptive, or drunk, which is usually the case at Albany Med.

Anyway, I'll be in the class of 2011 at UNE.

Scott

my work gave us a treo and overall it's nice to have but the screen is smaller than a regular palm pilot. you can turn off the phone and use just the pda so that's nice if you're in the hospital. as far as using cell phones in hospitals check out this link Mayo Clin Proc. 2007 Mar;82(3):282-5. from pubmed. it basically says cell phones have no affect on anything in hospitals. anyone else quitting work for the summer? i'm dropping down to part time starting in june and i can't wait.

I am completely abandoning work! I figure I deserve a nice break, some time to go on vacation, and the chance to tie up all the loose ends before starting medical school...AHH!!!

I did my psych rotation there from the middle of october to the end of november. Was awesome. They invited me back to do an elective/subI there this next year. I think I may take them up on it. It was a great rotation. I was mostly with Drs. Callanan and Nouamie, but I was with Justiniah, Dranetz and a few others for a week or so.

Umm....so my name is definitely not Rachael, it's Roslyn. Where did that come from?
