ouch sorry about the fracture. Yeah I saw pics of the storm damage too.... I was curious about how UNE fared

Hi everyone!

I just signed a lease for a beach house for next year (still looking for a roomie, though, so if you're interested-- please let me know!), but I can't move in until Sept 3. Does anyone have an extra room that I can rent for the first month of classes?

UNE biddeford fared fine. We didn't have school Monday due to power failure. the Westbrook campus was far worse - they just got power back this afternoon. I did hear that the river running on the 3rd floor of Alfond was pretty amazing, tho.....

The damage isn't so bad unless you were on the beach itself. There are still a few houses that are expected to be claimed by the ocean tonight at high tide. On the other hand, I live in Biddeford in a house: while my backyard was a lovely swimming pool (until my husband went out back in the pouring rain and dug a trench so the water could drain into the culvert a little faster), my basement was perfectly dry. Lost power for 4 hours Monday morning, lost phones for 5 hours Monday afternoon, lost DSL along with phone. No problems here. Several of my classmates were still without power this morning, but they lived in Portland, Alfred, Buxton, or other areas just outside Biddeford.

Could someone fill me in as to the activities and the event at OsteoBlast? My fiancee has a 4yr old and we are curious if it is an appropriate event to bring her to. It will be nice to meet a few of you there! Take care. ~Jas

I'm using cingular and it works fine in biddeford/saco/unecom, but don't know about other places.

Seeking Roomate
Male, seeking roomate; male or female, someone quite, preferably a retired ninja, nonsmoker, and easy to get along with.

I think Rob (redwings) attended last year. He would be able to fill you in. But as far as I know, it is definitely a "family" event.

I was planning on going (and very excited about it, too!) but my plans had to be changed last minute for this weekend. 🙁 I'm sorry I will miss it, I was really looking forward to spending a nice weekend up in Maine. The weather should be beautiful! Let us know all about it!

Hi! Umm.......my name isn't Rachel, it's Roslyn. I think I asked this question before, but where did Rachel come from?

Cingular is the only one I know of that works the farther you get into maine. But in biddeford, Verizon could be fine.

Have traveled for a while and just started settling down. I'm Yoon from Portland, Maine! I'd like to learn more about all of you and am looking forward to meeting you!

so supposedly as full time students we are eligible for food stamps. I don't know if you are allowed to use them in another state other than your primary residence though. Hey, free food. 🙂

How so, is it because we have 0 income as students? I just looked, here is the amount you will get monthly.

http://www.fns.usda.gov/fsp/applicant_recipients/fs_Res_Ben_Elig.htm

1 person = $155
2 people = $284

155 x 12= $1,860 savings annualy or $7,440 total during school.

Now if your right, what is the point of getting the Unecom health insurance plan, when you can apply for a government one, since your income as student will be zero.

C'mon Vlad, can you honesty say that you trust the government to look out for the best interests of your health? And especially with your "questionable" background, you know they'll try to take you out if given the opportunity.

Don't know about the health insurance plan personally. But the food stamp eligibility is yes, because we don't have an income.

for anyone's who interested here are some links. This first one you can go through to determine if you are eligible and how much you would qualify for.
http://65.216.150.143/fns/

This second one gives benefits of the program.
http://www.govbenefits.gov/govbenefits_en.portal

To sign up you would need to go to your state welfare office cloest to you and just sign papers. Hope this info helps!

Maybe it's just me but you wouldn't have an ethical problem accepting assistance? You don't think that money should go to people who are genuinely struggling...? It sure sounds good on paper but I, for one, will not do anything of that nature.

Is anyone able to log onto myUNE? I could log onto U-online ok but my ID and password for myUNE won't work for some reason. quite frustrating... I guess I'll have to try and contact their help desk.

they haven't loaded us new people onto MyUNE yet. I had the same question about a month ago and they said that we would be loaded sometime end of April.....so maybe anyday now.....

hmmmm I see your point. well the info is there if anyone needs it.

As an I.T. guy, I should probably know this, but I do not. 😳 On the UNE computer requirements sheet, for new computers, it indicates minimum screen resolution of 1280 X 1024 (SXGA, UXGA, WXGA, WSXGA and WUXGA). I was perusing the Dell website for laptops. For the E1505 laptop, you can purchase WXGA or WSXGA. The resolution specs on Dell.com indicate 1280 X 800 for the WXGA and 1680 X 1050 for the WSXGA.

Does anyone know if you need the WSXGA to meet the minimum?

Cueball,

I would recommend shelling out the cash for the best screen, you'll get clearer font, and thats prob why UNE lists it as minimum. Especially with the amount of text we'll be purusing digitally, having a clearer image will minimize wear on the old balls, hopefully lessening the effect of "Medical School" Myopia. I have the WUXGA screen on my Dell, and in comparison to other screens, the font is just much clearer.

Hi everyone! I'm going to UNECOM this fall, too. I'm new to sdn so I'm still trying to figure this site out. I'm from CT. Anyone looking for roomates for the 07-08 school year or have any advice on how to go about finding roomates and an apartment near school? Let me know! 🙂 Email me at [email protected]

I definitely want to minimize wear on my old balls thats for sure. HAHHAHAHAHHAHA

I'm going to be a doctor ladies and gentlemen 👍

I had the WUXGA for my previous dell and it was fabulous.
when i upgraded to my new dell, i went cheap and got the WXGA+.
There is a huge difference between the two. I believe the wuxga allows u to see 72% more. I like to do a lot of photo editting so i regret it everyday. If all you are doing is browsing the web, and light use its not a bad choice but if you are doing heavy gaming and/or lots of media work, i seriously recommend the wuxga 👍

No doubt Brother. Just looking out for my cohorts' best interests. As future physicians, it's imperitive that we act responsibly and take every effort to preserve the proper functionality of all our diagnostic tools, especially the old balls. Its the responsible thing to do.

Go with the WUXGA higher resolution screen, it'll keep that myopia from creeping up on your dynamic duo.

Cueball maybe you're in the same boat as me...

I don't want anything bigger than a 15" laptop...trying to keep things small. So I guess still wondering if people have feedback on whether or not the wsxga (1680 X 1050) would suffice. I know the Dell E17something would have the wuxga, but I don't want a 17" laptop. Anyone else annoyed by this requirement? I can think of at least two other laptops I would get if it wasn't for their 1200 X 800 resolutions.

Don't get a laptop yet, there will be big sales in the summer for back-to-school offers. Also, newer models will be released, including a midsize version of the Macbook Pro, possibly a Mac tablet.

A textbook you guys should all get and read prior to August: Bates' Guide To Physical Examination & History Taking

As someone with lousy med student insurance, at this point, I'd trust the gov. to manage my health insurance if I had the choice.

In my opinion, the school's health insurance is overpriced. AMSA or SOMA offer cheaper insurance options (MegaLife) with similar coverage (if not identical) to the schools. It's all pretty terrible though. Luckily Maine has state-mandated laws regarding health insurance that requires insurers to cover items that they wouldn't have to if they were serving clients in another state, ie. Texas (where MegaLife is based).
Regardless of what's stated in the plan they offer, they must pay for items designated necessary by the state of Maine if they insure a Maine resident.

Aside, I know a few students on Mainecare. Some who truly need help to pay for major surgeries, etc. and some who are pretty much just taking advantage of the system.

I would caution on relying on getting Mainecare. Alot of providers stopped taking Mainecare up until last year because they were not being compensated. I have heard that this has been partially addressed, but would advise caution as it may happen again (after all it is a political lever).

I should be clear that I would love the option of having my health insurance managed through a universal healthcare system- highly regulated or managed by the government like in France, Austria, etc.... and find it totally unethical to apply for medicaid just because you're trying to milk the system. Use it if you need it.

Some students also have Dirgo Choice.

Be glad y'aint in mississippi

Ccongrats, congrats!

Some lovely rooms in this house are still open:
-------------
CONTACT: Adrienne at [email protected]

Room for rent with other UNECOM students in a beautiful sunny house located near campus, downtown, and grocery with hardwood floors, cozy woodstove study, deck, large yard, laundry, and extra storage space. Plenty of space for privacy and several quiet study areas.

Attached studio (personal kitchenette and bathroom) with private entrance also available.

Be careful about AMSA and SOMA insurance -- they denied both claims I sent them (I was on each for about 3 months during a transition period), and a good friend I know had them and every single claim they filed was denied until they fought it out. Took about 2 years for each claim to get paid.

NJ, I would say that the 1680 X 1050 will definitely suffice as the UNE document indicates a minimum screen res of 1280 X 1024 (1680 X 1050 is a higher res than 1280 X 1024), and I am fairly certain that you can get the 1680 X 1050 with the E1505 which has a 15.4 inch screen.

You think $2660 a year for health insurance is overpriced? It sounds like a bargain to me. In New York, unless you can get insurance through your employer, theres really only two options no matter which company you use. Healthy New York for $220 a month (which is terrible insurance), and a decent PPO for $600-700 a month.

Hey everyone-
Quick question here. Which Stafford Loan lender did you choose, and why? Is Citizens Bank in any way better than Total Higher Education or Citibank?

Having angst with the UNECOM supplemental...figure I'll be in debt for a long time, but didn't know if one lender was better than the others.

Thanks so much!
Looking forward to starting it up on Aug 8th!

Hey!
From what I understand there isn't much of a difference between the 3. It seems to come down to a matter of preference and perhaps some slightly variations that you could find on their specific websites and what not. I went with Citibank for the simple fact that I used it for undergrad loans. I am thinking maybe they'll give me a discount after 45 years of paying them back. ....a girl could dream...

P.S.---anyone thinking of going d.o./mph ?

Anyone have any idea what kind of stuff is involved with orientation?

Alkapaka
Yeah, Im thinking of doing the MPH program they offer, but don't know all that much about it yet. Do you?
and does alkapaka short for a future alpaka farm you plan on having?

did anyone here go to osteoblast? if yes, how was it?!

Nice to meet you fellow UNECOMers of 2011! Congratulations! My buddy and I are looking for a third roommate. We found a nice 3 bedroom house a couple miles from the school for $1200/month with washer/dryer, but utilities not included. Let me know if you're interested...just facebook msg me or e-mail or AIM: SecretAzianDan, thanks. See you all soon!
