i wanted to cry to you guys about this unfair pay situation. i am currently a pharmacist for one of the big chains for almost 2 yrs now. my partner who was hired recently is getting paid significantly higher than me. Does that make any sense? the guy's been a pharmacist a few yrs longer than me but i started with the company 2 yrs before him so how the fk does he get paid almost $10 more than me. i apologize for the language but i am fuming right now. i know im not supposed to know his pay rate but someone slipped up and told me (and i wish he hadnt cuz ignorance is frikkin bliss). im pissed enough to start looking for another job but im not trying to make any rash decisions right now. you think i can bring this up to my boss or is that a bad idea altogether. i just want him to justify the huge pay difference here cuz this is bs. anyway let me know what you guys think. thanks.

Don't bring it up to your boss. He has more years of experience being a pharmacist than you, so his pay should be more, regardless if he just started with the company or not.

Sounds normal (from personal experience in other fields). Few ideas what would have happened:

1) That person negotiated better pay, good for him.
2) The employer wanted to recruit him for reasons unknown to you and lured him with higher pay.
3) Matched his previous salary (same negotiation as 1 or 2, depending who initiated).

Nothing you can do without looking like a jackass/unprofessional, so best to suck it up and be more aggressive about your worth next time you're job hunting. Might be worth applying secretly to other jobs and use them as leverage to negotiate a higher salary.

Are you female? Always ask for what you're worth...usually 20% more than what they offer 😉 negotiating pay is something that comes with work experience. It's perfectly acceptable to put a figure on the table and work from there. Then again, I don't work retail and haven't for a long time so maybe things are different? Regardless, companies will pay the least amount you will take. It's business. If you have the skills they want and offer you a position, then you have the ability to negotiate something fair to everyone. This includes benefits, time off, etc. unless it's set in stone (some places it is). But, hey, I'm just a student so take it or leave it. All I know is that I've been working since 1999 (in pharmacy since 2004) and everytime I've asked for something, I ended up with more than they offered even if it was less than I originally wanted.

i'm guessing you work for CVS? they have been doing this for years.

Like someone else already said, there are plenty of reasons why someone may be paid more than you. Some are very good reasons, others are just variations in life. Don't automatically think your perspective is balance or you can see the whole picture.

If you have real concerns, bring it up at the next eval and explain why you are worth more, but also listen to what the management has to say.
