Hello everyone,

I will be applying this cycle to med school and have a quick question regarding one of my activities. Firstly I want to say that I have a nice amount of clinical , community service, leadership, and research hours- so hours are not the concern.

There is one particular activity that really meant a lot to me and I want to keep on my application. However, it’s located about 5 hours away from me, so it was difficult to sustain during the school year. I have been involved with the organization for 3 years so far but only took part in 1 weekend long event that lasted basically 72 hours. However, immediately after applying I am scheduled to go back and perform multiple events that are 2 weeks long a piece in JUNE itself !

- while giving the description on my AMCAS can I lump these projected June hours with the 72 above and include that I have been involved for 3 years? I fully intend to follow through with this activity and even continue it beyond June. I am already scheduled so it will happen

- the activity is not a medical mission or anything as such
@Catalystik @Goro @LizzyM @gonnif

Thanks!

You said “I have been involved with the organization for 3 years so far but only took part in 1 weekend long event that lasted basically 72 hours” which makes it seem like in the past 3 years, the only thing you’ve done with this activity is the 72 hours long event.

So I’m really confused.....

I guess a better way of saying it is that I have been a part of the organization for 3 years. But only took part in one weekend long event thus far and have more events scheduled for the June of this year.

So, on my AMCAS I want to write that I have been a part of the organization for 3 years while coupling the hours of the weekend long event with the projected June hours. I hope that clears things up.

Did you do anything related to the organization during those 3 years besides the 72 hours event? Or were you just an inactive member?

In my opinion, it would be dishonest for you to put a 3 year time-range on the AMCAS work and activities section if your only contribution thus far is a single weekend event. You don’t get points just for being on the roster if you don’t play.

All of this is regarding what you have THUS FAR, not what you plan to do. Whatever your projected hours are should go in a different time range.

Don’t a lot of people become part of an organization and scarcely do any work or do 1 event a quarter? I am planning to count mine in terms of hours I commiteed. On my application I plan to include the 3 year range until June- and I know they won’t revive the application until June last week by which time I will have completed my designated task, hours wise. I also will continue even beyond but this is just for my primary I am referring to.

By the way this isn’t a campus organization, it’s a 3rd party company that hosts programs. So no meeting or anything as such.

There's an option to say that you did this activity multiple times. So you can write the timeframe that you did the 72 hours over and then write the timeframe and hours for the June+ part.

For example: I was a lifeguard for two summers. I wrote down that I lifeguarded X hours from June 2017-August 2017 and Y hours from June 2016-August 2016. I did not say that I was a lifeguard for June 2016-August 2017.

I don't understand how you were a part of this organization for 3 years. You did the 72 hours almost 3 years ago and now you are doing the couple weeks in June? It does not seem like saying you were a part of this organization for 3 years is accurate unless I am missing something

My point exactly. My guess is that OP was officially listed as a “member” but only went to one event.
