Hi

I am in a unique case and I would like to know what I should be doing to maximize my chances to get into D.O school in 2015.

I am an ROTC cadet and MUST graduate in 2015
I currently have a 3.7 GPA
No MCAT yet
Volunteer at hospital
Vice President of Wrestling Club

With ROTC I am really busy ( 90 percent chance will have to stop wrestling ).

So my question is....with limited time, what should I be doing to get into medical school.

I was purposely was vague so I could get a lot of different responses.

I'm not sure what's so unique about your case. You are a unique individual... just like everyone else.

Very strong MCAT score 👍. I assume adcoms understand how much ROTC takes up time (I have a friend who is in one and he's always very busy). If possible I would try to join a club that is related to the pre-medical field. But most importantly try to shadow a few doctors, a MD for 40 hours and a DO for 20 hours (just an example).

Those are phenomenal grades and your ROTC shows your discipline. I think with a 27+ MCAT, you will have a great chance.

A 3.7 is really good for a DO and would be competitive for a MD with a 30+ MCAT.

Not really unique, a lot of applicants have impressive commitments and accomplishments outside of cookie cutter pre-med activities.

Nothing else matters until you have a MCAT score you are happy with. Study for that and take the exam when you've completed your pre-reqs and have studied adequately. Take all the AAMC practice tests. There is a free exam on their website.

Aside from that, continue shadowing or start if you haven't. I started getting letters of req early as well.

MCAT scores. A high one will get you into a good school like everyone else has said.

SHADOW A DO. Getting a LOR from a DO is a requirement for many DO schools. Try to shadow as many doctors (with at least 1 DO) as you can. However, put studying for the MCATs as your first priority.

Also, make sure you have enough points to be able to go into Medical School from the Army perspective. My old XO told me to drop out of ROTC before I did a commitment and just straight up apply for the HPSP or National Guard because Army Active might restrict when you can do med school. I heard a lot of it depends on getting enough points and the approval of the Army to go to Med School. I didn't want to deal with that crap so I dropped and now I am joining back up as National Guard. Just remember to ask your XO or CO about doing the Medical School route. I assume you would want to do HPSP so a high MCAT score would make you an automatic acceptance.

Just some things to think about.

Need to do some shadowing to see what a doctor's life is like, and get LOR; ideally shadow both DOs and MDs.

GPA is great; you'll need an MCAT ideally in the high 20s.
I understand the demands of your ROTC, but displays of altruism and humanism always go down well.
