I was curious, does anyone know of any atypical residencies/fellowships?

What I mean are things like:

Space Medicine at UTMB
Aerospace Medicine

12 Wilderness Medicine fellowships across the US:
Wilderness Fellowships

If you know of any other weird ones, let me know lol This is just a curiousity of mine.

Sounds fun and interesting! Though the job market is probably razor thin.

GW's wilderness medicine fellowship is actually a bit more expansive than most:

  • Primary Training Course in Hyperbaric Medicine
  • Hyperbaric Medicine Clinical Rotation
  • Physician's Training Course in Diving Medicine
  • PADI Open Water SCUBA Diver Course
  • Basic Aviation Medical Examiner Seminar
  • Introduction to Human Health in Space Graduate Course
  • Wilderness Upgrade for Medical Professionals
  • Disaster Medical Specialist Course
  • Incident Command Courses (100, 200, 700, 800)
  • Worldwide Emergency Communication Center Clinical Rotation
  • Ultrasound Clinical Rotation

Wilderness, disaster med (like natural disasters or chemical leaks), aviation med, hyperbaric... all pretty cool

Is this like the basket weaving of medical residency?

Nah, it is like you go and work for NASA to either monitor astronaut health or to enter in to the astronaut program and become a Space Doctor.

Wilderness med can be like being on the medical board for a National Park, being the private medic for an Everest expedition, overseeing a search and rescue program etc.

So, if anyone wants to fulfill all of their childhood dreams, dual MD/JD matched into an aerospace residency. Space Doctor Lawyer is a genuine profession.

What's the point of the JD? In case I need to conduct a trial in space?

I am actually interested in space medicine, hopefully one day they'll be an increased need for us in space so I can experience it.

I could theoretically see someone getting involved in the politics of expanding American Space exploration. This person would focus on the health aspects of the astronauts in the discussion of policy changes.

Incidentally, there is a review article on space medicine in the era of civilian spaceflight in the current issue of NEJM.

That is actually what spurred this post. I commented on the NEJM facebook page saying "This would finally make the HPSP worth it if it meant I could be a space doctor in the Space Force." When someone else informed me of the fact that Space Medicine residency is already a thing.

What can you do with a Wilderness Medicine Fellowship? A close friend of mine met Luanne Freer MD and is now pursuing this dream for herself:
An Interview with Luanne Freer: Everest Doctor - Adventure Medic
You can do expedition medicine (Rich people and organizations need doctors while they climb Everest or do a 6 week exploration of the Amazon)

You can be a medical director for a national park or forest.

You can teach CME and medicine in austere environments.

Overseeing SAR organizations to ensure proper training.

Things like that.

Imagine coming back for your class reunion and getting to tell people that you are a "space doctor"

Once the Space Force gets set up, I reckon "space doctors" will become more of a thing ;)

Wilderness medicine isn’t that unusual in the EM sector. Many EM residency programs do some outdoors stuff during residency and will also team up with fire and police to run mass casualty events or do some activities with SWAT. It’s pretty fun.
