Unique volunteering

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I helped elderly crack addicts score their "fix". It certainly has set me apart from the other milquetoast applicants with their hospital volunteering EC's.

Something I've been thinking about for a while that would be a great volunteer experience is taking patients in a retirement community to doctor's appointments. My grandmom says they always complain that they can't drive, but need to get taxis to appointments. Heck, that could even be turned into a decent program.

Other than that, get involved with a homeless shelter, do habitat for humanity or other community building work. Keep an eye out for school funding for international experiences. Some alums love to give money to ambitious students. It's really a matter of creativity. There are so many different projects you can get involved with, you just either need to seek them out or create them yourself.

Hospice care was something a friend did, and I think it really made an impact on her. I'm not sure how she got involved, but keep in mind that it's probably very difficult.

last year, i spent the summer de-worming orphans in somalia

(legally blond quote... i know, chick movie, but it was funny)

volunteering at a suicide prevention hotline has been extremely rewarding for me...free clinics and hospice...i'm thinking about training to volunteer with mentally ******ed individuals working with speech therapy...i also just saw something that interested me, working with the red cross on first aid teams; people trained in first aid and cpr could volunteer to work at sporting events/5K runs/etc as emergency first aid team members. That sounded really cool but I have a very bad habit of trying to take on way too much and I would have had to get re-certified in both first aid and cpr as mine expired in december...Try volunteermatch.com
