This is new, I dunno much about it so I can't offer much help, I'll ask Dr Joynt on Monday.
Sorry it took so long to get back to you, been BZ.
The purpose of the writing exercise is to see if you can write. We have had some students who had other people write their Personal Statements and they slipped through the cracks. These are the ones who bulk up their application with "shock and awe" but are complete idiots and it reflects poorly after they are in the program.
I'll give you an example, I cut and pasted this letter just as it was given to me by a fellow classmate who needed help getting her INS stuff. I'll let you all guess which country she is from. (Don't laugh too hard, She is actually very talented and one of the best clinicians in our class, She just can't speak or write English well.)
the ONLY thing I changed is I left out the last name:
Kerry ---
Adress
To whom it may concern
My name is Kerry ---. I is Yuliyas classmate. We hav been sitting together for the past two years. We became friends realy realy fast scince we both had same last name first letters.
Before I came to Buffalo, My wife and I lived in Hawaii. I hav been in navy for 5 years of active duty as dental technican while going to college. When I got accepted to dental school, my wife still had another year to finish up her school. We decided that I would go to Buffalo first and year later she would come to Buffalo. She came here last year and we already hav two months old son.
I know what David and Yuliya is going through. However, the good thing is that Brooklyn and Buffalo is close and they see each other pretty often. I do not see them very often outside the school, because Yuliya goes to Brooklyn or David comes here. Even when David is here they do not like to go out. However we went to night club twice together.
I wish them the best luck, and hopefully after Yuliya finishes the school they will hav bigger family.
Cincerelly,
Kerry ---
END
This person will graduate in 5 months and be very sucessful.
and of course I completely rewrote the letter and she got her green card or whatever INS does these days. Oh and I showed her how to use spell check.
