University of British Columbia Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know they look at the admission average after the term is over..that means that course grades from the summer sessions wont count towards it right?
If you mean summer session 2011 then yeah, it wont count towards it.

Just submitted my application! I am so relieved now. Phew!

Did anyone else get an email from the UBC undergraduate admissions office saying that the Change of degree/program application needs additional information to proceed (the online pharmacy application) even when the pharmacy application is already submitted?

I'm not sure if they are just trying to remind me that I also need to fill out the pharmacy application after the change of degree/program form..or something else?😕

To the person above:

They are just reminding you because you probably filled out your change of degree a bit later than most. If you've filled it out, you should be okay.

Good luck! 🙂

my ref letters + pcat scores now say received, if anyones eagerly awaiting confirmation, check now 🙂

When did you submit them

one ref letter was submitted approximately a month ago and the other was just submitted on feb 28th. PCAT i suppose was done back in september.

It may be that they are going by last name (mine starts w/ a B)

nice to meet u all! first time applying to UBC,,,,just wondering if anyone knows wut out of province applicants usually need to get in?? i heard its alot higher than BC applicants :S

I submitted both of my reference letters on the same day. It says received for one and not received for the other...?

Did you send them by mail or in person? If you sent them by mail, I'm guessing that maybe your letters were delivered in separate batches?

I guess these absurdities that we've been seeing may be due to the Faculty's ongoing sorting of all of our documents. I'm hoping that everything's going to look more and more normal as we approach March 15th... =)

hi everyone. new to this forum. if anyone is interested, both my pcat score and references have been received. i wrote the january, 2011 pcat and dropped off my references on Feb 25th in the box. good luck to all the applicants this year 🙂

I submitted them in person. I am scared because I had my name on one of the envelopes and not on the other one. Dont ask me why, lol! I dont know what I was thinking. Could that have anything to do with it?

it's quite possible. it seems like at least 2 of us with last names starting with B have updated checklists.

I just checked and found out that both the references AND the pcat were "received"! =) My last name starts with "N," but I'm also re-applying, which may explain why I got the pcat status update earlier.

Actually, I also submitted them in person, and I also didn't put my name on one of them (the other was sent by e-mail from my referee), so you would be okay since your name is on the form itself! =)

Mine are all received now as well 🙂
last name "L"

hopefully you guys all get interview offers! Good luck and feel free to ask me stuff once you get your invites!

First of all I LOL at the forever alone meme.

Second, I am in first year pharmacy as well now, and would also be available to help you guys.

👍 good luck folks

Hey guys, first time SDN user, long time stalker

I looked at all the past UBC Pharmacy threads, and I think I might have a moderate chance at getting an interview. After getting a scary mark on the PCAT, I'm really working my butt off for a really competitive average.

What worries me though, is whether the 92% admissions average for first year science would also translate to an increased admissions average for UBC pharmacy. Or would the increased seats just cancel it out?

What do you guys think?

My last name is mid-alphabet and as of yesterday everything was checked off. I mailed my references in mid february via xpresspost and they already had my PCAT score from my previous application though.

Note that generally only 1/3 of your first year pharmacy class would consist of students who got in after first year.

Furthermore, with increased seats, they are bound to increase the number of people they invite to interviews as well.

So I think as long as you have an average of around 80%ish, along with a PCAT composite score of 75+, you will have a very high chance of being invited for an interview.

The number of interviews are still the same as before (350 for 224 seats) according to the website. So if you get invited for the interview, you have a VERY good chance of making it in 👍

Edit: Quick question: do you think they will look at the trend of students' academic performance, i.e. a student doing bad in the first couple of semesters but getting straight A's after?

i just consider that statistic the number of legs i need to break. 😀 no interview, no problem : D>-<

but in all seriousness yeah it does seem like a good chance.. but i bet everyone else thinks that as well so alot more people applied :s

To answer a few of your questions.

They send out approximately 350-400 interviews. Judging from the increased seats and applicants, it'll be 400 this year.

Only med school looks at your last 60 credits on top of your prerequisite GPA and overall GPA whereas Pharmacy only cares about your prerequisite GPA.

Do you think taking Chem223 and Chem235 in the summer is a good idea? The pharmacy website recommends it, and I really like organic chemistry... but my friend warned me not to take it... I heard it is really rushed and super hard...

Ouch. But what if I took Anatomy 390 and 391, Micb 202, Biol 300 and Phyl 301 and got A+, A+, A, A+ and A+ respectively? I did bad in the first 2 years but have been taking these courses to boost up my admissions GPA for pharmacy. My overall average for pharmacy admission is still around 77% after the straight A's streak so I was wondering may they'd realize that I'm more focused in school now and give me a chance lol. Stupid wishful thinking

I was considering taking CHEM223 as well. Do u know if we have to take CHEM223 and CHEM235 at the same time?

I wish they did, but it's extremely difficult to take that into consideration as there are so many other factors.

For example, some people are in different degree programs and have a much harder schedule which can correlate to a lower mark. Such programs like Science One really gives applicants who are applying a disadvantage in terms of GPA.

But yeah, I think with a 77% GPA you're fine. I'm applying with a 74% PCAT, so I'm really praying here.

I've heard PCAT is not that big of a deal. It's supposed to be 50% GPA, 30% interview, 20% for application and PCAT (coming from the pharmacist I volunteered for who recently graduated from UBC and also from a couple of pharmacy students I know at UBC). So if you had good GPA and application, your PCAT score will not hold you back 🙂

Haha. I'd love to think that, but I'm still super worried.

Good news is they've finally received my pcat + references.

For anyone that cares, my last name practically resides at the end of the alphabets, so it doesn't seem like they're doing it in alphabetical order.

thanks for reminding me to check. i'm all received too : D

i probably have more to worry about than you anyways.. i went to 3 post secondary institutions.. and the first 2 i failed just about everything XD

i dont know my gpa cuz the place im at is on the 4.3 scale

anyone know if they usually contact the people who write the reference letters

Yeah. If anything, they will contact the people who wrote the reference letters as the reference letter's format specifically asks for a number.

Edit: But I think it's random. They may contact successful applicants, applicants who are on the borderline, etc. We really don't know for sure.

Sorry if this is a replica of 'instinctz' question, but I am still confused. So this means that when someone is applying, they must have completed at least 30 credits of coursework in any time frame? or does it mean 30 credits within the past 2 semesters (ie: Sept 2010 - Apr 2011)?

you must have completed/or in the process of completing the required 30 at the time of handing in the application.

this is why you need to send an interim transcript if you are from another university/college

for example if i completed the 10 required first year courses (the 30 credits) i could apply..

if i only completed 5 courses but was taking the other 5 in spring (current) semester. they would already know this if you were attending UBC. and they would know this because you sent an interim transcript from other post secondary institution. you have until like june (i think) to get your marks in..

since they already know what you are taking its not hard to just plug in the grades you received real quick..

hope that helps

and to answer your question (ANY time frame) as long as they are equivalent

Yes it helps, thanks for the quick response

Hi everyone,

Does anyone in lower mainland want to form a interview practicing group?

I know the interview offers have not been made yet, but I think it's a good idea to get a head start regardless. We will be facing the interview one day or the other if we are serious about becoming a pharmacist!

I have no experience with MMI format in the past, so I really want to get a feel of how it is with a group of people.

If interested, please PM me or leave a reply and let's try to work something out.

Thanks 🙂

Same here. So I'm also interested!

Speaking of which, I heard UBC is holding mock interviews on March 19th and 26th from 10am - 1pm, held by the prepharmacy club. I heard it's good practice since actual pharmacy students are conducting the interviews, but you need to sign up as they're only accommodating 60 people altogether.
