University of Cincinnati C/O 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i'm still waiting to hear from several places, but am definitely considering cinci. 🙂

Just got the acceptance today and I am super-pumped! 😀

Congratulations! Hope you guys are all coming here 🙂

- UC 1st year med student

Yes I'm a second year here at Cinci and I love it. If you like to have fun please come here. If you don't please go somewhere else. More fun for the rest of us. 🙂

Cincinnatians,

I'm from out of state and have no idea where to live in Cincinnati. I really would like to buy a place and want to live near the city (I, too, enjoy having fun!). From what I've heard, there are some fairly sketchy areas in Cinci, though. I would greatly appreciate it if anybody had thoughts on places where I should and shouldn't look.

Thanks!

Hey,
Some of your questions might have been answered in the cincinnati c/o 2010 thread. I just bumped it up LOL. Enjoy!

I am a first year at UC. There are definitly some shady areas. You really have two options as half our class lives right next to the school, and half lives in the nicer area of town but further away. Right next to the school is a nice new place called "Stetson" in which you can buy or rent but its pretty expensive. There are also other apartments in the area like Highland Commons which are decent. This is close to downtown but most medical school students don't go downtown to party. Pretty much everyone goes to Mt. Adams which has pretty cool bars. I don't know of anyone who lives in Mt. Adams though as its really $$$.

The other option is where I live in Hyde Park, Mt. lookout, part of Oakley area. (When I say these areas its because Cinci is broken up into these little districts which each usually have their own town center). This are is only a 5 minute drive to school when no traffic but like 25 minutes when there is. Still its much safer and nicer around here to me.

Anyway let me know if you have any questions. This is the first time I looked at SDN since starting med school but I will check this thread every now and then.

just bumpin... any new future bearcats out there?

ME!!!! Got accepted last week, and definately coming to UC, no question about that. I actually live here now, in an apt. complex in East Hyde Park, it's okay, a bit of a drive from school, averages 20-30 minutes usually.

Can't wait to meet you all!

👍 congrats meanthgirl.... you plan on living in hyde park for next year? i am looking for a place to live but not sure where i am gonna end up. I was thinking about stetson right next to campus but i have been told that it is actually nice to have some separation from the campus when you go home so it doesnt feel like med school is always following you around.

yeah, tech. out here they consider hyde park and east hyde park to be two seperate neighborhoods, whatevs. east hyde park is a little bit more affordable but a bit further from campus. oakley is also a neigborhood where a lot of grad or professional students live too. clifton is another with lots of students. i like where we are now, the only reason why we might move is to rent a home instead of an apt. we looked at stetson square and it is definately nice but on one side you have the hospital directly and very older homes around it. it was a little too close for me and i thought was expensive. if you were to share w/ somebody it might not be to bad. on the flip side, w/ all the new facilities they'll have at uc that might not neccessarily be a bad thing. you would have to travel for shopping, etc though

me = medanthgirl as in medical anthropology. not meangirl! lol

Congrats to all who are coming to cincinnati.... I went to undergrad here and work at Cincinnati children's hospital research foundation, However I am still clueless where to live. I have a wife and infant, so I really need a "friendly neighborhood" relatively.... I have heard that a few medical students with families live in the gas light district on or by ludlow... Is anyone in the position of moving a family with them?.... maybe we could help each other out on what we come up with?...awesome!!...I am looking now, but i figure may or early june is when action will be taken....

For those who plan on commuting from off campus areas, let me tell you, the University of Cincinnati is notoriously known for it's lack of parking for employees/students, you definetly need to look into a parking permit in Eden garage or a nearby lot. Trust me, it is worth the extra couple hundred dollars a year to spend.

Besides that who are you and what are you doing with your time off before hitting up the nasty nati?...me.. I am just working two J-O-B's to pay off this debt mess before getting into even more of a debt mess with medical school at UC!!....good times!

yeah i hear you on the debt. i definately do not have a family, only a gf. I will most likely get a place in oakley or clifton. Stetson might just be too pricey for me so I dont know about that. I am working with a radiologist this year in middletown ohio (he was a radiology prof at UC for 25 years). Hopefully I will make enough money to save up a little bit. I am also gonna coach a baseball team this summer. I guess i wouldnt really call it time off because I am working a full time job. I am excited for august though! 👍

who dey !

ummm what are you whodeying exactly....they ain't going to the big dance! although another one got arrested....

sorry....my love for the panthers has not transfered over to the bengals, i can only love on feline-mascoted nfl team at a time.

lol, i'm just messing with ya....

Hey everyone! I'm a first-year UCCOM student, just stopping by and saying congrats to my future underclasspeople (I resisted the urge to say "underclassmen", we want to make our fine female classmates feel welcome 😉 ) I'm an exiled Californian and drove all the way from Los Angeles to Cincinnati when school started, so if there are any out-of-staters who want advice on setting up, making the Great Trek, or any general "surviving in the Midwest" stuff, feel free to PM me. I'm very excited for you all! Alright, back to studying. 🙁 [whip cracking]

P.S. [waves to Bobodr] say hi to Meredith for me!

hey--first post on SDN. But I'm in at U Cincinnati, found out 1/31. See you guys next year?

hehe. i must admit i am still living in a dream world. There wasnt much to who-dey about this year 🙁 i'm just one of those optimistic fans that hopes each year will be our year..... and dont worry, you will be converted to a bengals fan in no time!

hey bearkat 1,

yeah, my husband and i are gonna poke around to look at duplexes/homes for rent this summer, we're in an apartment right now in cincinnati - east hyde park but there's so many homes for rent we figured we'd look around when our current lease is up. right now i'm a masters student at uc and will be finishing my thesis this summer. but i'll definately be around!

Hello everyone! I'll be part of the class of 2011 too and I'm extremely excited. Thanks to all of the current students for posting info about housing. I was accepted early decision so I've had a lot of time to think about moving to Cincinnati but I really had no idea where to begin. I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone 🙂

Actually, I've been wondering if anyone knows what textbook is used for year 1 gross anatomy, especially the embryology portion. I'm a biological sciences major but I have next to no background in embryology and I'm a little worried. Anyway, I'm graduating in March so I'll have some time off and I was thinking about getting the textbook early so that I won't be so overwhelmed. I tried to find textbook information on the UCCOM website but I wasn't successful. So, if any first or second years know what text is used, I would really appreciate the info. I guess I'm already a little nervous about starting med school (gulp). Thanks!

Congrats on getting in to all!
I'm a first year, there aren't any required texts for any of our classes first year. Each course puts together their own "syllabus" which is a text itself. There are some suggested texts for each class, however. Gross anatomy suggests moore's clinically oriented anatomy (don't bother with it.) Embryology suggestes Larsen Human embryo 3rd ed. You don't need that either. I would say Netter's Atlas is pretty much a necessity for anatomy though or if you prefer Grey's or Grant's those are good as well. Most UC students use Netter.

If you'd like information on microanatomy (histology), physiology or biochemistry as well I can offer my opinion. Keep in mind you'll likely hear different things from different people. In the end it's all up to you. Hope this helps.

PS Don't study this summer, enjoy the time you have left before school begins, you'll be glad you did come next fall.

hey all future bearcats... hopefully the basketball team will return to full stride next year. I am hoping they are just rebuilding after huggins' departure.
anyways, my father is engaged to a woman who works for a publishing company so i get most of my textbooks free or half off. I emailed the dean about what textbooks the first years use so my father's fiance could order them for me. She emailed me back with the syllabus that all of the first years get that list the books that are the must haves and those that could be helpful as well as the descriptions of first year classes. Just PM with your email and i will gladly send you the syllabus. hope it helps 👍

I might wait and see what the recommendations are going to be for your class. Things could change between now and august. For example, biochemistry required a text last year and does not this year.

You might want to try the Pleasant Ridge part of Cincinnati. It takes 20-25 min to get to class from here but property values are a lot more reasonable than Stetson or Hyde Park. There's a great mix of stores nearby and I-71 is pretty close. Most of the people here are young families or retired, and you can actually get a lawn.

I would not live further north than this however, as traffic on I-71 N tends to back up after Ridge Rd.

My wife and I found a awesome loft downtown cincy...(WHODEY I can practically walk to the bengals game!!) It will be exactly 2.83 miles to commute by bicycle... The best thing is that the landlord is holding our place until june 1st because he looks at us as potential tenets for fours years!! Cant wait!!

Hey everyone!
I'm a second year and just wanted to say congrats. Let me know if I can answer any questions! I'm on "spring break" now... and SNOWED IN in Columbus... blehhh!

I got my finacial aid packet this week and I'm sure so have the rest of you. Does anyone know what the consequence is to request the max unsubsidize stafford and grad plus loan. If I do this, does this mean that by default, I will be excluded from other forms of aid. The request form specically says request what you need. Well frankly... I don't know what I need, so I was just going to request the max and take what I need when the time comes... What are your thoughts and suggestions?

Does this mean you're riding through Over-the-Rhine twice a day? Or do you have a different route?

I'm not sure if it excludes you from other aid, but to be safe you could always borrow the max for the first semester and see how much you actually need per month once you've lived as a med student for a little while.

Do you know if that landlord has anymore of those lofts? Did you come across any others that looked good? Just out of curiosity, what kind of square footage are you getting for the price?

About the CARE/Crawley building:

Is it going to be completed on time? (When I interviewed, they mentioned that it was scheduled to be completed in october but that might be getting pushed back until Jan 2008)

When completed, will any of our classwork take place in the new buiding? (I was under the impression that some clinical skills might be taught over there but that lectures would still take place in the Medical Sciences Building)

my two cents about housing....if you can come take a visit to cincinnati to pick out your place or even neighborhood you might want to do that.... cincinnati's neigborhoods are really different, spread all over the place, and have different stuff around them as far as parks, shopping, how often they are on the local news, whatever, and it's good to check it out. plus there's TONS of rental options (i saw a stat that over 60% of the city rents) in different types of buildings: apartment complexes, duplexes, buildings w/ 10 units, buildings with 200 units, townhouses, etc. then there's old cool victorian buildings (that are broken into apartments), modern buildings, or more matter of fact. literally there is something for everybody and i think its worth a trip to be where you want from the school (some people may want to be really really close others may want something with a little more distance), feel comfortable, and like. my husband and i went for a pretty standard apt. complex, which has been great, but there are a lot of neat options too that i think we'll look into this summer.

bearcat1, ur from cinci, but i don't know about that bike ride!!! u can do those hills???

good luck! :luck:

In previous years over the rhine was considered the ghetto's of ghetto's, however city counsel, law enforcers, and some ambitious business men have invested many years and city dollars in rebuilding, cleaning the neighborhood up.... you can now find some great contemporary condo's or rentals for a decent price and not worry about getting mugged... recently there is a sense of community... trust me, I have lived in Cincy all my life, when I graduated high school in 2001, OTR was really really really bad due to the riots, drugs, and crack houses... now those that did the drugs and started the riots are driven out in prison or elsewhere.. oh and the crack houses back then are now beautiful renovated contempory or tradition condo's/apartments... something you can do a search on is the "gateway project" in over the rhine which may give you a sense of the direction OTR is going. There are some good things happening in OTR, so dont rule it out... if you like urban lifestyle, this is a great place to live... and yes this is where I will be living my wife and infant son.... in fact there is a UC law student with his wife that will be my neighbor. A web site that may help some of you out is:

http://www.gototown.com/cgi-bin/viewcat.cgi?Category=Downtown Living&Subcategory=For Rent

My wife and I went through a place called urban sites properties, 1000sq ft 750/mo with private parking and security. It is by music hall where our white coat cerimony will likely take place (at least thats where it did in the past).

There are many downtown rentals that are about 2-4 miles away from the medical school... hope this helps some of you. oh and there is about 178 days until class starts!!!!

Hey guys. Just a couple comments-- first about financial aid. I don't think that's a bad strategy to request the maximum amount of aid for 1st quarter, you can always reduce the amount of money you borrow for the next two quarters if you want. Just something that I wasn't aware of when I was coming in, because the Stafford (and Grad Plus) loans are federal loans they have to be given to you in 3 equal disbursements over the 3 quarters. This means that the amount of money you request gets divided by 3, you get the first third in August, the second third in January, and the third third in March. Does that make sense? It sucks because that fall quarter is much longer and you will likely have additional expenses due to moving, so money might be tight. It'll just help to be aware of this.

About the CARE/Crawley building-- I really don't know much about that, I'm sorry. But construction on that and the MSB is one huge project. The project includes a lot of improvements in the MSB including the med school library, so having that finished will be a huge accomplishment. The classrooms and clinical skills lab are both in the MSB, so I don't think you'll be going to the new building for those things. Hope that helps!

thanks for the advice on the loans. I am definately gonna start with the max amount and see how it goes. Any preferences on what lender to use? as far as the new building goes, what will we have in there? If we are not going to have classrooms or clinical skills there, what is that huge building for? thanks for the advice!

Research, the new building is mostly research facilities. There will however, be a food court and recreation facility. Other than those two things I'm not sure there is anything directly related to medical students.

i thought i had heard that the gross anatomy labs would be moving in there as well, but not sure.
the new library in there is supposed to be wonderful, lots of study areas w/ a unique set-up

Sorry, I can't help you on choosing a lender. Most of the differences are when you go into repayment which I know nothing about. I know there were small differences though but I can't remember what they were. For example one was better if you're very good about paying bills on time-- if you pay the first 60 payments on time you get an interest rate reduction or something like that. They really didn't make it seem like a big deal, I think you'll be fine with whoever you pick!

I'm also joining the class of 2007. I've lived in several areas of Cincinnati and am living in Blue Ash now with my wife and three kids. The drive in should be around 20-30 min depending on time of day but the schools are great and everything else is very accessible.

Any other non-traditionals of there for 2011?

congrats aero. I am somewhat non traditional but probably not to the extent you are. I a few years of post grad work after college because I was an economics major without much of a science background. I am not married and dont have kids. I think bearkat mentioned he had a family.

Welcome aero!! I am somewhat a non-trad, I have a wife and one awesome 5 month old son. I am 24 but look like I'm an undergraduate freshman, so I might stand out in that regard...haha...

I finally got all my finacial aid stuff done....My status page says that I am complete!!!! (counting down to MAY 15 for estimated award!) They have also received my transcripts.... I guess the only thing to turn in is the criminal background check.... right? But no info on that yet....

I use THE for my loans, and if you poke around the Financial Aid part of SDN it seems like a lot of other people recommend them. I called them up a couple of times last year and they were very helpful, plus they had the lowest rates of the three providers (albeit not by much).

Grats on the acceptance, aero!

The Higher Education loan is the one I chose.... I agree, they were very helpful and the repayment bonuses are much better then the others.... non-profits will always be more student friendly
