University of Cincinnati C/O 2011!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Stoked to see so many from UC posting here. You will get a fantastic medical education at UC that will make you stand out among your peers in residency.

On a side note, I did live very near Over the Rhine (OTR) with 4 other med studs, and had a classmate live deep in OTR. I DO NOT SUGGEST LIVING IN OTR. It is not a safe place, and unless you live there you wouldn't understand.

In the Heights is better (Klotter etc), but be prepared to have stuff stolen/vandalized etc.

Hyde Park, Mt. Adams, Gas Light area, Oakley, all are good to live. Near the med school is also okay, but you need to overly cautious.

TysonCook,

Any advice or words of wisdom for early first year? I took a quarter of biochemistry from Dr. Lieberman this year and found him to be an EXCLLENT teacher. He does a great job of starting from fundamentals so if you haven't seen it before (or ever like me) you have a chance. Any that you found to be better/challenging?

Anyone out there note the section in the fin aid packet about "merit based" and "need based" scholarship aid??? I know those funds are most likely limited, but it did say the merit-based can range from 5000-full ride.

Just wondering if anyone knows how many people are offered some (any) merit-based aid each year (i.e. current students who might have heard their peers bragging "yeah, I got a 10K merit-based scholarship")

NB

While I haven't heard any bragging, I have heard the merit-based scholarships number less than 10.

i.e. 10 full-rides or 10 small scholarships around 1-5K???

Thanks for the info man!!!

I called the financial aid office today and was told that the committee meets some time this month and they will let people know about scholarships by May 15th. It was a fairly terse reply so my first impression of financial aid is not so good...

The financial aid office are good people. However, before I started first year (and I'm pretty sure this happened last year too) most people did NOT get their award letters right around May 15. So, I guess if you're not one of the lucky 10 merit-based scholarship recipients (which I, unfortunately, am not) don't expect to hear from them until the middle of the summer. I think I got my award letter around the beginning of July. Hope that helps!

thanks for the info...it says the amounts of merit-based aid range from 5K to full tuition. I'm just trying to figure out what those 10 people are getting in terms of $$$. Just trying to kill time between now and August 13th.

Thanks,

NB

I second that about killing time.... I find myself constantly trying to find something to do involving med school... But I think it is because I hate what I am doing now... Working full time in addition to having a second job part time to pay off as much consumer debt as possible before school starts...

So I've been watching this forum for awhile, but finally joined SDN so I can post. I'm definitely considering Cincinnati... I'm leaning towards it like 60-40, the other side being Case (see my thread in the pre-allo forum for details). But I just wanted to say hello.

Since I'm not from Cincinati, and only saw the school during the interview, if anyone has anything they'd like to share about what they're really excited for next year or what they really like now (if you're already attending), the enthusiasm would be much appreciated and very helpful! I get way too much of the Case influence living in Cleveland, so I'm trying to balance the scale...

Cheers!

bengals vs browns....... hmmmm, i gotta take the bengals 🙂 (though i heard the browns just acquired jamal lewis). I think you can't go wrong with either choice. Case is ranked a little higher but I can't imagine that making a huge difference. I dont know how much price is a factor for you but it certainly is for me. I am assuming Case is considerably more expensive than UC. You also have to decide if you want to experience a new city. I am from Cincinnati and had the opportunity of going to undergrad on the east coast so I have been away before. It just made me realize that my Cincinnati is where I belong. hope that helps, :luck: with your decision.

haha well I'm a browns fan, grew up in Cleveland and am comin down to UC this fall... hope I can catch the brown's season on tv down there (I feel like we're the only team in the north that has gotten better so far in the off-season, no?). Also, I'm hoping to not catch too much crap for being a browns fan. Either way, yay for class of 2011.

well the browns have improved slightly, but i must say they really had nowhere to go but up :meanie: the bengals should be decent again but their defense was so terrible last year and they have done nothing to improve it. They did have some injuries that set them back last year. At least no one has been arrested in the past month.

Yes, well although the football teams certainly add to the attraction (?) of each city... I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about University of Cincinnati as a MED SCHOOL that they're looking forward to...

Also I'm planning on going back down for a visit around the end of March, what should I see while I'm down there?

Thanks! 🙂

Are you planning on coming during the week? If so you might want to look in to spending part of a day with the first year med students. I did this last year when I was deciding on schools, it was very helpful. Another option would be to meet with Dr. Burr our financial aid guy, he's great. Admissions could help you with all of that. The third thing I would recommend is driving some of the common communities where students live ie clifton, Hyde Park, Oakley.

Anybody have any idea just how little your parents have to make to get any need-based aid? Also, how much does that aid usually amount to? Are we talking just a grand or two or is it more substantial? I am pretty sure that my parents combined income would be too much for me to qualify, so I am trying to figure out if it is worth my time to fill it out. The fact that my parents are divorced and one lives overseas is certainly not making it any easier. That needaccess.org is a pain in the butt, especially with these complex parental situations!

I asked the fa office about that and was old that if the parental income was less than $150k and there were other siblings in college then it would be workth filling out. I didn't ask about the level if you are the only student. I have no idea about the level of aid the may be available but even a grand or two with interest compounding over several years is worth some pain in filling out the forms from my viewpoint.

Piper - I wish I could add some great information to sway you one way or the other. Overall your opportunity to develop won't come down to one school or the other if they are this close. It will come down to each student finding a niche and hooking up with someone in that department to learn, establish connections, and earn great LORs for residency. If I were in your situation I would like heavily at which school has the stonger faculty in my area of interest. The only thing I can add on this is that UC has had very high turnover in the surgery department. It will likely settle back down but if you are interested in that area take a close look.

If you have any specific questions on the Cincy area for your visit please let me know. I'm married with kids so my viewpoint is quite skewed from a 20 something looking for nightlife... I'm looking for coffee and a good place to take a nap!

Yes, plus I've heard they lost 2 from surgical oncology, some from cardiothoracic, plus. My interviewer (non-surgical) also mentioned there is still quite a bit of turmoil overall regarding Zimmer and her changes. No specifics, just overall comments.

hmm... well I'm not so sure about anyone leaving cardiothoracic. We do have Dr. Randy Wolf who is a pioneer in CT surgery (he was the first US surgeon to perform bypass with the Da Vinci robot.) Dr. Tim Broderick recently joined the faculty, he does a lot with NASA and the US DOD (see link.) I honestly don't know about surgical oncology. As far as Zimmer and her changes, I don't know about that either the only Zimmer on surgical faculty is in ENT. So, overall I would say surgery is still very strong at UC ... labeled a 'marquee' program. Anyone thinking they want to go into surgery would benefit greatly from what UC has to offer.

I am only a first year and admittedly don't know everything that is going on in the clinical realm of our school.
I am curious about Zimmer though? What's that all about?

Sorry, Nancy Zimpher - my fingers got a bit out of whack. There have been plenty of articles on her conflict with various college heads.

I still have very high confidence in the UC surgery program - I'm hoping to be able to match into it in four years but I've been told by three different sources that there are some problems. There are probably few programs that roll along smoothly so I look for all of the things I have heard to go away it short order.

My intent was not to disparage UC's surgery program but to give an example of other things that one can look for when trying to differentiate between programs. The kind of information that doesn't show up in brochures and stats can be just as important. Since surgery is my interest it is one that I have done some digging into. As I mentioned, I still hope to eventially match with UC so even if what I have heard is absolutely true it is not enough to sway me from the program.

I would choose UC over Case btu I am a local so my opinion i quite slanted.

Still here - thought I drove everyone away with the surgery conversation. Since the match results just came out I might as well continue...

Surgery Matches:
North Carolina Baptist Hospital
Carolinas Medical Center
Eastern Virginia Graduate SOM
Brooke Army Medical Center
Loyola University Medical Center
Mount Carmel Medical Center (Preliminary)
Allegheny General Hospital
U Tenn Gaduate School of Medicine
Emory University SOM (Ortho)
Beth Israel Medical Center
UC (Plastics)
Wright State (Ortho)
Wright State
University Hospital - Cleveland (Ortho)
Good Samaritan Hospital x3
UC (Ortho) x3
Ohio State
Univ of South Florida Coll of Med (Plastic)
UCSF-East Bay Medical Center (Preliminary)
UC (Urology)
Univ of Texas SW (Urology)
Truman Medical Center (Ortho)
Pitt County Memorial Hospital

Not too bad of a list!

As far as taking a break goes, I think I will be working up to the last day to get those last few hundred dollars saved up. If not, I'll be headed to the beach or camping for a week or so...

pretty nice list, especially all of those orthos 👍
what kind of work do you do aero?

Just thought I would list some of the highlights of our match this year. It was another good year for UC.

Anesthesiology - 6
Dermatology - 2
Emergency Medicine - 12
Ophthalmology (PGY 2) - 4
Orthopedics - 7
ENT - 3
Pediatrics - 20 (11 staying here at CCHMC)
Plastics - 2
General Surgery - 13
Urology - 2
Radiology - 4 (2 each diagnostic and therapeutic)

We also mirrored the national trend of an increased interest in OB/GYN with 11 matching.

Does anyone know if there is a way to find out who matched into UC's programs? I'm looking to make vague inferences by looking at the "quality" of the schools the applicants are from (i.e. EM gets all Harvard, UCSF, etc).

Does anyone know if the new research building is going to have a work out area that is accessible to medical students? I have heard this but I am not sure if it is a rumor.

Follow this link and click on the picture of the new research building. It looks like it is not free for medical students though!? The rec center on the main campus is just as impressive and it will be free to med students... been there many a time and it is awesome!!

Yeah what is up with that? Can’t it just be included in our $24,000 tuition? It looks like it is $87 a quarter for full time students. Oh well, the convenience factor might be too hard to pass up. I guess if people like me are willing to pay if they will charge it. I like how they are going to have a basketball court right outside though.

I'll have to take another look at the UC master plan to see if they ever plan to link the east and west campuses by anything other than a bus. While the facilities on the west campus are excellent I'm not the type to hop on the bus to work out. If I buy a parking pass for Eden Garage that's what I would have to do... $87 a quarter doesn't sound too bad.

Has anyone heard if they are going to bid the MSB rennovation for third shift? During my interview they made a point to say how they did that for the new construction so it didn't interfere with classes/hospital. I'm hoping we won't be greated by one new building and a lot of daytime rennovation.

UC President Nancy Zimpher just got a 5 year contract extention so it looks like there will be some additional leadership continuity durign our time there - a good thing!

Anything else new going on?

I called the admissions office last friday and ask if there was anything I should get a early start on, The lady told me that they will be sending out information regarding housing and other things within a week or two. This is good because I went ahead and canceled the previous lease my wife and I signed for June! If someone calls, they may have a more specific answer of when those materials will be sent.....By they way aero, Nancy Zimpher also declined to take a $40,000 pay raise to her salary due to low state support, hopefully she can help slow down tuition increases... But she still makes $340,000 a year!

Did any of you all consider UK when you were picking schools? I'm trying to decide between UC and UK, and I'd appreciate some fresh perspective. I get the feeling that UC would be the smarter choice, it's well-respected in the clinical areas I am interested in (peds, surgery, emergency med), but I am from Lexington, which I like a lot better as a city than Cincinnati. Thanks.

Hey cherrie, glad to see you are considering cincy. Though I didn't consider UK, I did consider Louisville. My father was an alum there and it was the first school I was accepted to. In the end, I chose cincy over Louisville for a few reasons. The most obvious is tuition. Being an out of stater in Kentucky is no picnic because you can't apply for residency after one year. I just couldn't justify spending an extra $15000 a year. I assume you are out state, and I know you can get Ohio residency after a year so that will save you some money. I myself am a big fan of Cincinnati as a city, but that is mostly because my family is here. I look forward to nights when I know I am going to be stressed and will just want to get away for a nice home cooked meal. I went to undergrad on the east coast so I have been away from home and am ready to be back.

I also am a big fan of the fact that UC is going to have a brand new facility while I am in school. The new buildings look gorgeous and it is good to see that they are continually improving the campus (UC has changed A LOT in the past ten years and it shows forward progress). Of course they do say when construction stops is when you should be worried. UC is ranked higher than Louisville and UK but I don't think that really matters all that much. I have just heard form my father and other docs in the area that if you graduate from Cincinnati you will be in good shape for residency, especially in the Midwest, which is where I ultimately want to practice.

Sorry to give you some of my story, but this was my thought process in choosing Cincinnati over a Kentucky school. Hope it helps!

Your pass is actually good at other garages around campus. There's a garage you can park at (Corry maybe? Across from the baseball fields) which is a 5 min walk from the new gym on west campus.

www.uc.edu/parking and click on parking reciprocity 👍

Stargirl50 - THANKS! I had a gagare pass for undergrad years ago and didn't realize the policies had been updated.

Or.... if you don't have parking passes like me, you can go to the gym when street parking is free (parking meter on Jefferson operates from 7-6 M-Sat). Gym closes at midnight on weekdays, so I have like a 6 hr window if I want to work out at night. But, I guess not everyone is a night owl like me :meanie:

Anyone know if the first week / introduction is 8-5 each day or is it a lower commitment where work is still possible?

I second that question aero.... aero do you have kids too, I know that you mentioned that you were married, I am trying to figure out what to do finacially for my family while I am in Medical school, My wife will not be working do to taking care of our child.... Are you in a simular situation with your family?... what would your plan of attack be?

Anyone know if the first week / introduction is 8-5 each day or is it a lower commitment where work is still possible?

The first couple days of orientation will likely be 8-5. Once classes start so does life as a medical student so there may be a couple days between orientation and classes where you will not have commitments all day.

If I were you I would not work after orientation begins, or maybe even a week before that, if you'd like some downtime before school begins.

dang, that is sad that we'd have to pay that per quarter though! although if a quarter is 3 months, give or take a few weeks, that's like 30 a month. yeesh, idk i was looking forward to it but that seems like a lot. there is a shuttle too that will take you from eden garage (across from msb) to campus for free that comes every 15 min. the campus rec center would be a very short walk, like 1 or 2 min. i always seem to screw it up on the way back though (like catch the one that goes alllll the way around campus) but that's me, not them, i think there is a way to catch it directly back. but it can add up though on a bad day (10 min of waiting for shuttle + 15 min of traffic if you are going b/n 5 and 6pm)x2 = 50min just going back and forth. that's like the absolute worst though, usually it's 20-30 min altogether.
though won't we have like a bare bones gym room set up in the med student rec area?

i'm gonna be here this summer, hopefully gonna finish my masters here at uc in july, spend a couple weeks in nc, catch up on tivo, and just hang out! 😀

Wife, three kids, mortgage, etc so I am quite concerned about the money flow. I've got a decent amount in 401k/IRA that I will be pulling from but other than that it will be loans. My wife will be home with our youngest for one more year. After that I am hoping that she can find some freelance graphic design work to get back into.

I will likely end up with a private loan. I read on another thread that one person is taking a $30k private loan out right away to avoid having to go back later when his credit rating is shot. The best chance for a low rate / low origination fees is before accumulating the debt. Over the four years this is an extra $625 a month which goes a long way toward clothes and food for the kids since that isn't included in the financial aid calculations.

I could move to cheaper housing to save some money but our kids are in a great school system and I refuse to lose that. Even if I could save a few hundred a month that's less than $10k. Having good neighbors and good schools are worth that to me.

Any suggestions/experiences on making this all work are welcomed.

Thanks for the information! I'm planning to take a week or so off using accumlated vacation time so I'm still making money...

I'm planning to see if I can set up a flexible 10 hours a week with my current employer to keep some income but school comes first... A few extra dollars won't mean much if I don't pass or don't land the residency I want.

Anyone else out there working / planning to work? I've read opinions on both sides on other threads but I don't remember seeing any from UC.

Aero... Thanks alot for your input, looks as though you are in a simular yet more stressful situation.... Now those private loans you speak of, is that a loan seperate from that stafford and grad plus?... and is this a loan that has to follow UC's Budget for years 1-4?.... I guess the question I am trying to ask is, can I take a extra student loan out seperate from stafford and grad plus and not have to worry about paying on it until after graduation? If so, who do you suggest going with, like you said, my credit is 750+ so I better jump on this opportunity if I have it.... Another question... Is the UC budget for students set for just the stafford + grad plus, or stafford + grad plus + any private loans?

I appologize for all the questioning, but this private loan thing may be the answer I'm looking for my family and I... Thanks .... I can already tell that we are classmates out to help each other!!!:hardy:

I appologize for all the questioning, but this private loan thing may be the answer I'm looking for my family and I... Thanks .... I can already tell that we are classmates out to help each other!!!:hardy:
You should meet with the med school financial aid office. Dr. Burr is excellent he will step you through all of this... its more complicated than a post here could explain

Hey everyone, I interviewed fairly late (January) and so I ended up interviewing for a spot on the waitlist which I am currently on. I was just wondering if anyone knew how extensively they use this list according to past statistics. The admissions department seems reluctant to give out much information, and I was just curious if anyone knew what my chances were. Also, if anyone knows how they order the list (priority given to those who show interest, etc) that would also be helpful. Thanks a lot.
