This another complex I keep finding in my searches- it's nice to hear from someone who lives there. I'll have to check it out.
 
btw the prices on the website are not what you pay. we are paying $860/mo for a two bedroom, and i think it says $1000 for that model on the web page. there is also a university of colorado employee discount which i get as a resident (sorry guys!)

Damn, I was really hoping to see some good news for our fellow applicants over on the pre-allo board. But it's also made me even more grateful for an OOS acceptance. Seems like you can't take anything for granted in this process!

Yeah, I went in there all ready to hand out happy congratulations, but it's been mostly a river of tears there. I feel really bad for a lot of folks.

By the way, I have a cunning plan to find you when we all meet as a class. I'm going to yell "Tough Cookies!" and I expect to hear someone yell back "Eat Me!"

Hi everybody!

I actually was accepted to CU back in January, but I didn't realize there was a thread til now. I too have been loving Colorado more and more since then, especially with the brand new campus and I'm seriously considering the global health track. (Someone who's a student already, can you tell me if you can do stuff abroad without going on the track?)
Recently, I've decided to go to Colorado for sure, but I do have a few concerns. First, I don't have any friends in Colorado. My family moved there 2 years ago when I was in college, so I'm technically IS, even though I've spent like a month there total since then. All my friends are either in Texas or the east coast, so I'll feel a little lonely.
Second, Colorado is known to have a lot of non-trads and families. I'm straight out of college, and I'm only going to be 21 when I start, so I'm afraid I'll feel really young and out of place.
I don't think this will be too much of a problem, since I'm sure I'll make new friends, but I can't help but have it cross my mind.
Anyways, I'm still really excited for this to begin, and I'm planning on buying tickets to go back for April 18th. Is anyone else here planning to attend?

I don't think you've got anything to worry about. While some of our classmates may be quite old *ahem*DeAlighieri*ahem*, I'm sure you won't feel out of place. Colorado does seem like it has more non-trads/older students than the average school, but I'm guessing that students recently out of college are still in the majority. Most importantly, you're already of legal drinking age, and I think we'll all agree that the greatest class bonding usually occurs while inebriated.

I'm also going to be new to the Denver area, but I'm looking forward to getting to know the city and making new friends. I had the same concerns when I moved to a new city for a post-bacc program, but it ended up being a great year.

I'm sad that I can't make it to the open house, but I hope you guys have a great time!

I just withdrew from everywhere else and committed to Colorado. Look forward to meeting everyone! I won't be at the revisit, but plan to move to Colorado early summer. Hope you all have fun.
 
hey everyone! i'm pretty sure im going to CO too.. im from colorado so if you have questions about denver let me know, i can try to help! catdoctor-im thinking about doing the global track as well, but it doesnt seem like thats the only way to do international stuff, i think it just helps. im trying to get off work so i can go to the open house too so hopefully i'll meet some of you there! just wanted to say hi, im excited to meet everyone!

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful. 😉 Welcome to the thread, all of you new folks! I'll be attending the Open House, because it represents not only a day off work, but also an opportunity for free food and time to meet some of my med-school colleagues on a less formal basis. While I'm saddened that I'm going to have to wait until August to meet a certain hardened baked good, I'm glad that I'll have a chance to meet Catdoctor and Sassafras432. See you guys in April!

Thanks for the info, I actually looked at the USNews book, and according to them, 80% of CU students are not straight out of college, which is higher than I found for any other school. But I'm really not worried about being in the minority anymore.
I don't know about the whole drinking thing though because I hope to leave all the crazy partying when I leave college, lol. At least during that crazy anatomy block.

Sorry you can't make it to the open house. I actually really want to go because of the housing fair. I have no idea where I'm gonna live, but I do know that I want to have a roommate at least for the first few years.
Can't wait to meet all of you!
 
Wow, 80% is pretty high. But just take a look at this thread...does this seem like a mature collection of people to you? I rest my case.
 
Catdoctor: I have been a CO resident my whole life. I am biased, but I think that some of the best people you would ever care to meet live here, so I don't think you have much to worry about

I think I might have to challenge this and suggest that the best bonding occurs on powder days. Anyone factor the skiing into their decision? Hopefully all of you in the class of 2012 will find the time to hit the slopes once in a while.

I am gearing up for the upcoming application cycle (come on class of 2013!), and CU is a bright blip on my radar.

So this is actually my first time using SDN. Cheers to those who started the thread! I am for sure coming to CU and I am so excited. It was my first choice. I'm actually in Central America through June right now but I've decided to come back for the 18th. I have no idea where I'm going to live so I wanted to get an idea of the options and meet some folks. Any more info people have on housing would be really appreciated. Also, if anyone is looking for roommates lets talk. I would love to live with other med students for a little mutual support and want to find people who would value some quality human interaction and community when we're not hiding in the corners of the library. Does anyone know if there are good places to live near some green spaces or parks?

For those who are worried that the old geezers and LDS students in the class will put a damper on the fun and social life, do not worry! Every CU med school class has had more than its fair share of wild parties, promiscuous sex, heavy drinking, and other extracurricular activities. You just have a wide range of activities to choose from, and you will find like-minded friends no matter who you are (that includes you old geezers and LDS students).

Dartmouth and Colorado are both good schools and very different. I'd caution you against putting too much weight in the "new" curriculum. It makes for a good presentation, and might even be more enjoyable to experience as a student than Dartmouth's more traditional curriculum. But depending on your learning style, it might not be as good for learning and really understanding the material. In the Dartmouth curriculum, you spend more time learning normal before jumping to abnormal. Abnormal is fun, and eventually, it's what we want to learn. But in cutting the timeline of the new curriculum so aggressively, I'm afraid there are some big gaps and ultimately, it's a disservice to students who need a little more time and repetition to digest so much material.

Either way, they're both very good schools. Personally, I think CU has an edge over Dartmouth for the clinical years. But as for the first two years, I think it remains to be seen if newer is better.
 
Thanks for the info. I think I will be going to CU anyway, but I was waitlisted at Dartmouth and will wait to see if I get any kind of acceptance coupled with an outstanding fin-aid package. The only drawback to CU in my mind is the OOS tuition. I liked both schools even though they were different.

Also from Montana. Praying for WICHE, the OOS tuition is steep. Are you going to the April 18th gathering? I am looking for someone to split the gas from Bozeman.

Wouldn't WICHE be automatic if you're from Montana? I thought that was the whole point of the program. Also, if you can't find someone to split gas with, I hear horses are pretty common up there, although I don't know if buying oats would be cheaper than gas. 😉
 
That would be nice, unfortunately WICHE is based on funding through the MT legislature and this year they will be funding only 6 medical students.

neuro - I won't be headed down on the 18th, gotta work 🙁

Oh wow, I thought it just meant that students from WICHE states were given in-state status for tuition purposes. I wonder how many students from Montana were accepted to Colorado...well, best of luck to all of you from Montana!

No, but I did do some pre-med coursework there so that I could apply. I am a non-trad and needed a few classes. I will miss Bozeman; I love it here. 🙁
 
Yea, Bozeman is a sweet place. I've lived there for the last five years. I'll be sad to go, but I'm definitely excited to live in a bigger place, especially one like Denver that still has mountains and skiing within a few hours drive!
 
Hey guys,

I need some advice. So far I've only been accepted into UCO. I thought it was ironic considering how badly the interview went, but I've concluded that this medical school acceptance business is pretty random. I must be honest, UCO is not my first choice, but it's the only school that has accepted me so far (I've interviewed at 9 schools). I was a little disappointed with the Aurora area and expected it to be a lot like Denver. I thought the facilities were great, and I think living in the Mid-West would be a wonderful experience. Furthermore, I was really fascinated by the hospitals and believe the university will only get better; thus, I am genuinely considering attending. With that being sad, if I were to attend UCO, I would definitely live in Denver. How inconvenient would the commute be? Also, I'm a little hesitant attending a school known for 'non-traditional' students. I just turned 21 a few months ago and honestly don't feel I'm quite there yet in terms of maturity. Any feedback?
 
Couple of things mista ripsta....

Denver city proper is probably some 5 to 7 miles from the Fitz/Anschutz campus... The streets are layed out in east-west and north-south orientation. It is literally a straight shot down Colfax (east-west) to get downtown where there are many affordable living options. Colfax is probably "the" major east-west street and it runs right by the front door of campus. Plenty and frequent buses run this route... there is a campus stop literally 100 yards from the building in which you will be taking classes. ANd there are student discounts for monthly bus passes. From downtown, you can access anywhere in Denver on buses, free shuttles, and the "subway" system... this includes all sports and music venues, bars, mountain ski shuttles, etc.

As far as "nontrad", it is the first I've heard of that but I am a nontrad and will be a classmate should you choose to attend. I am considerably older than you, and still relatively immature myself:laugh:

Seriously though, the thing about CU is that everyone here takes part in what recreation the state has to offer. This is a great age equalizer. I have many friends who are considerably younger than myself... rockclimbers, road bikers, skiers, etc.... and of course these are all good bar-hopping buddies. Once you find your niche, you'll find plenty-o-people to hang with.

If you're still concerned, I attended the CU med meet and greet, and almost everyone there was considerably younger than me.

Denver is a great city for your age group. And you are accurate in future prospects for this campus/ school..... When fully completed, it will supposedly be the largest institutional/ private medical bio-park in the world...You would be doing yourself a very grave disservice for choosing not to attend for the reasons you have cited.

No doubt. Colorado may be friendly to non-trads, but I'd say the vast majority of our class was in their early twenties. I wonder if I met you, MtnGntx, at the Open House. I sure as hell got a sun-tan that day; I had no idea we'd be outside so much. Was glad to find (once again) that everyone was so incredibly laid-back and friendly, and it was nice to mingle with current students in a no-pressure environment. Also, I'm glad those seats were comfy, as 3.5 hours without a break was a long time!
 
:/ It's going to be a tough decision. I want to write a letter of intent to Pitt, but I'm not sure if I really want to go there. I feel like Colorado is too good of a school to pass up on. Do you have any apartment links because when I mapquested, downtown was about 15 miles from campus. Thanks for the feedback.
