University of Iowa Class of 2014

Hi guys!
I got my packet for 2nd look and it does mention we can get reimbursed for travel and lodging but I'm OOS so I'm not sure if this is a limited thing depending on how far you're coming from or what not. Can't wait to meet all of you!

I just took another look at my packet for Get Acquainted Day, and I still didn't see anything about reimbursement for travel/lodging. I'm OOS too. 😕

I'm going to e-mail Deb Henricks about it and let you guys know when I get a response.

Hey everyone!

So I called the admin office, and found out that travel/lodging reimbursement for Get Acquainted Day is only for admits who are considered underrepresented in medicine. Guess I don't qualify. 😛

I'll be in Iowa City for a few days before get acquainted day. I'm also planning on looking for a place to live then.

Hey all, is there a site for you all to find summer housing at U Iowa? Most apartment leases start in august, but if you're doing pre M1 summer research or IMEI that starts in June - see the issue. Anyway, just wanted to look for a place to post it since I have an apartment I'd like to sub lease out for June and July this summer for a pretty darn cheap price. If you're interested it should be on some sort of ICON page for OSAC communications, or shoot me an email. I'm Andrew McChesney, so [email protected] would do just fine.

P.S. Welcome to U Iowa CCOM!

Hey everyone, got the info for April 10th. I'll be there plus my "significant other." I think we are gonna stay at the Comfort Suites Coralville, Coralville IA, where I stayed for my interview also. Pretty nice, cheap and not too far. Hope you see you all there.

Heartland was really nice. I stayed there on the night before my interview. I'm still debating whether I should go for the 2nd day look. I would love to, especially since they're reimbursing the cost (I guess I'm under-represented), but with my girlfriend already not too thrilled about the prospect of me going to Iowa, I don't want to make things any more difficult than they are at the moment...

Do you go to UMich for undergrad?

Obama is speaking about Health Care in Iowa City on Thursday, wish I were there already.

How much of a greater chance is there to get accepted into Iowa's med school if you are an Iowa resident?

Greater than as an OOS, since it's a public institution. I'm sure their website has something more specific. They told us on interview day, but it was so long ago that I forgot.

Please feel free to yell at me if I am not supposed to post things like this here, but I am starting at Carver this fall and am looking for 2 female roommates to share a house with me. I posted a message on ICON already, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask around in here as well...

I am having trouble finding housing right by the MERF. It's all within a mile or so, but I want to live a five minute walk away.

I've noticed the same thing, but after looking at options I have to say I would rather live a mile away in a nicer place for much less money. A five minute walk would be really nice though. Oh well. I figured I will just be sure to get close to a bus line and I ride my bike a lot anyway. It will still take less than 10 minutes to ride there, not bad at all.

It's going to be cold as hell in the winter! You'll still ride your bike?

Actually, yeah 😳 I know it seems ridiculous, but when it's not snowy/icy on the path or street, I don't mind riding in the cold. That used to mean I could have ridden almost all winter in Iowa. Too bad this year it was snowy from November all the way through March! Really unusual though. But I can always just take the bus. It stops a very short block from the house I plan to live in and bus schedules show it takes maybe 15 minutes to get to campus from that stop. I can live with that. But I also completely understand why other people would rather live a ten minute walk from campus. That makes sense.

In other news, I found a facebook group for our class today. It's called:

"University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine Class of 2014"

Thanks for the info! I was wondering when someone would make a Facebook group for 2014.

But yeah, finding a nice affordable place within walking distance of MERF seems impossible. I think I've reconciled myself to the fact that I may need to move again after the first year.

What are the prices that you're finding in that area, and how do they compare to prices farther away?

My understanding is that as long as you are on the bus route you'll be happy with where you live in terms of distance. The cambus is supposed to very easy and reliable. I'm hoping to find in the 5-10 mile range too.

I actually started keeping an eye on apartments back in February. Specifically, the 1bd/1bath from Parson Properties that's located on River St. (about a 10min walk from MERF; $715 including some utilities+parking). I also saw on the Off-Campus Housing Website a few Newton St. apartments that were going for $500-something w/o utilities. However, all these were gone as of like two weeks ago.🙁

I'm hoping to find something west of the Iowa River, but it seems like there are a lot more apartments on the undergraduate side of the campus. I'm going to spend the next few days combing thru the Off Campus Housing website and possibly some of local newspapers so that I can visit some apartments when I'm in Iowa City next week.

But yeah, I heard that there're multipe bus lines running thru/around the campus.

Does anyone know if there are buses running between the area of W Benton St/Carriage Hill/Oakcrest St. and MERF? It doesn't seem so from the Cambus route maps...

$715 would be a bit pricey, but I guess you have to pay what you have to pay. From what I'm reading here, I think living on a bus route will be the thing to do. Then I wouldn't mind living even a 20-min ride from campus.

Not sure but there are city buses for sure. If you go to the Iowa trasit site you can tell the start and stop points and they give you exactly which route to take.

Also for those looking at apartments 700 with utilities is probably not too different from 500 without, at least in the winter when heat can be a lot. I say go for utilities included whenever you can and have one less thing to worry about.

Thanks for the info! I actually looked at apartments most of today, and the Oakcrest/W. Benton/Myrtle area does have city buses going thru.

I thought utilities bills (heat+water+gas+electricity) usually run around $100 if you don't go crazy w/ the thermostat/faucets/appliances? $200 sounds like a lot, but I guess I'll have to pay for whatever I use now since I just signed the lease for an apartment w/o utilities.🙄

For those of you still looking for apartments, here are a few I looked at today that seemed promising.

From Heritage Property Management

31, 35, 41 Valley Ave: 0.5mile/8min walk from MERF; heat, water, internet included in rent ($650 for 1bd/1bath, $495 for efficiency); outside reserved parking $480/year, coin-operated laundry on-site

707-815 Oakcrest St: 1.2mile from MERF, city bus line in front of building; heat, water, internet, outside reserved parking included in rent ($530 for 1bd/1bath); coin-operated laundry on-site

The building managers for 20, 24, 30 Lincoln Ave. are almost impossible to reach.

From North Bay Company

832 Oakcrest: 1.2mile from MERF, on city bus line; heat, water included in rent ($490 for efficiency); coin-operated laundry on-site

1012 Newton Road: 0.5mile/8min walk from MERF; heat, water included in rent ($800 for 2bd/1bath); coin-operated laundry on-site

Hope the info helps a bit. There seems to be quite a few people looking for apartments, so I'm not sure how long these would remain available.

Does anyone know of a cheaper way to get to the hotel from cedar rapids airport? I hate to pay the $35 each way.

Hey All - I was just wondering if anyone has received any confirmation or any e-mail after you registered for 2nd look. I have not received anything and I think that's fine, but I was just making sure I wasn't missing anything! Thanks

Sorry, but I don't know how to get to/from the airport cheaper unless you have a friend from Iowa City to pick you up.

Just had the immediate confirmation when I indicated my preferences on the website; haven't received any e-mails/mail since my initial registration.

Dude, you're a god!!!

Haha, I don't know about that, but you're welcome.🙂

It was great seeing everyone this weekend. For the first time in a while, I'm actually pretty excited about starting school this fall.

It's official; I'll be going to Carver next fall. They've made me a fin-aid offer that I just don't see anyone else beating. Someone mentioned something about a facebook group. I don't have a facebook account (if I haven't talked to you in 5 years, maybe there's a reason for that), but maybe I'll create one just to join the class of 2014 group.

Will anyone here be doing the summer program thing?

I will be working close to home this summer. Didn't want to deal with the summer housing issue or do something too stressful like research right before the start of medical school.

I'm tired of working: I've been working for 3 years now and I'm ready to go back to school. I applied to the IMEI program and I hope I get to attend. I can't think of a better to prepare for med school.

Hey, future classmates! I got the greatest e-mail of my life this morning and will be joining you all in August! So stoked...
