Do you think they're going to feed us tomorrow, or should I bring my own lunch?

Holy fawkin bananas, 1 more day!! If I had that little dancing banana guy, I'd plaster him all over this post!

I really need to get out more. I've been going stir-crazy since I took this job & have been sitting in this house.

My guess is that they'll feed us. But, then again, we start at 11, so maybe they figure we'll all eat beforehand? Guess I should have a nice breakfast, first.

I have to meet with my boss at 9am...then I guess I'll find something to do for an hour afterwards.

I can't imagine them not feeding us. I'm sure they would have told us if we needed to bring a lunch.

LS, I would agree on the applying - I never understood why people "graduated" from pre-allo when I was applying and before, but now that I'm in I don't even want to open that forum anymore! Quite the mess. I'm sure it'll be fine once this growing ball of anxiety bursts, but until then I'm nervous :)

isn't orientation all about being fed, anyway? haha........i wish

Come over for a cup of coffee, i'm 5 mins from campus and I will make you some delicious espresso in my new espresso maker.

***attire - feel free to wear something representative of your

and although Orientation is not dressy (despite what you may

WTF?

PS who wants to go boozing tonight? IM me: 'AZK19'. I'll be around all day doing nothing.

jeans? It's 90 degrees outside, I was planning on wearing shorts AND sandals.

No flip flops? When they ask you to wear something from your undergrad...aka a t-shirt, what are you supposed to wear with it? Dress shoes?

Oh, and I second Coz's anxiety....I didn't think I was stressed out too bad with this whole moving and starting med school process, but apparently I simply internalized it all. <----This according to the doctor today at student health that diagnosed me with shingles. I had a friend who got it after the stress of organic chemistry...she failed to mention that the anti-viral treatment for it is $300.

Flaming Dr. Pepper's at my place? Lol...that'll definitely reduce my stress.

Holy crap, SQ, are you OK?? I'm so sorry to hear that you have nasty icky shingles - don't stress out, girl! You'll be fine!

I got that email today, too - WTF am I supposed to wear? At first, I was going to dress business casual, then I heard that we're supposed to wear T-shirts, but now we can't wear shorts or jeans? There's no way I'm wearing dress pants or kakhis in this weather. I would wear a skirt, but I'm not wearing dress shoes with a T-shirt - no flip-flops?? Jeez, I knew being a doc meant sacrificing style, but come on, what's a girl supposed to do?

Ari, you have an espresso machine? I have a Keurig - I'm addicted to it. I use it like 8 times a day. I'll come over for espresso! Just what the world needs - two over-caffeinated wolverines let loose in Baltimore city.

I'm totally down to go out tonight - although I won't hold my breath. Ari wins the "ultimate flake" award. He calls me yesterday saying "I want to go out after my condo association meeting," so I actually put on clothes to go out, and then he calls back later to say "I'm too tired."

I will go do flaming Dr. Peppers with SQ and Todd. They are also within walking distance of lots of stuff! You all have my # - call me & let me know what's up! We need to blow off some steam before tomorrow, and SQ needs to relax!

1) I think I'm going to wear shorts, sandals, and a wolverine t. Whatever. first day of orientation. If it's real big deal, I'll come on Friday in a suit.

2) I thought the meeting would be over at 9, i didnt get out til 945 and then still had to eat and take care of some things, I feel really bad, you said it wasn't a big deal yesterday! You should have told me you were already dressed and organized a group of 20...then I would have gone :D

3) I am down for flaming doctor peppers, and they live a block from me. What time are we planning on getting started so that I don't cook myself into a food coma.

4) Coffee is going to be great tomorrow morning while I'm hungover.

Hm...Todd won't get back from his interview until 6pm or so....flaming Dr. Pepper's around 8 or 9? By the way, I haven't cleared this with him yet, but he's always up for a good time, and doesn't have a thing to do tomorrow. ;)

can i bring anything over to drink? My liquor cabinet is coming along, right now I only have vodka, tequila, scotch and irish whiskey. I have 4 or 5 different kinds of beer though.

I'll be there with bells on. OK, not actual bells, but I'll at least be excited.

Is there anything I can bring? Rasperry vodka + seltzer + lime juice = LW's favorite drink. I can bring over whatever - just let me know.

Yum...that drink sounds good LW. If you guys want to bring stuff over you can. We've got the Amaretto and Bacardi 151, and I figured I'd swing up the ghetto Rite-Aid and pick up some beer (we have Sam Adams Summer Ale in the fridge, but that would be a crime to use it in the flaming dr.p. Good old Nat Lite should suffice.)

Oh man, I know a group of MS1s who are gonna be seriously hung over tomorrow. I've already explained to you guys that I can't chug - another skill set I never picked up, despite the fact that I was greek in college. Is this the famous beer that you and Todd were raving about the last time I saw you?

And a TOTAL  to natty lite - we're not in high school anymore! Yuck.

OK, I'm gonna go to Safeway, Lowes, and the liquor store. See you tonight!

Lol....it tastes like dr.pepper once you add the amaretto and bacardi, I swear! I'll tell Todd to pick up Bud or Miller Lite instead. How does that sound? ;)

ok so when is this going down, and seriously waht should i bring over, beer or liquor? I think we should also make an attemp to go somewhere tonight instead of just getting ridiculous at your place...i haven't seen a single bar in baltimore yet...

We should introduce Ari to the seedy underbelly of Baltimore - DIVE BARS.
Seriously, though, what do you have in mind? There are some hot clubs and stuff (depending on what you're into), but I dunno what's crackin on a Wednesday night?

Perhaps we can decide at S&T's house. How the heck am I gonna get to their place? Can I park on the street tonight?

You guys can come over whenever. 305 W Fayette St.....call when you get there so we can let you in the building. :)
As for parking, there is the Centerpoint garage, but it costs money. There are also some spots open usually on Fayette St across from apartment complex that should be free.

Oh my GOD...SOOOOO hung over. No memory of how I got home last night. I was preaching last night, wasn't I? Never let me get started...I won't stop. At least I drank a flaming Dr. Pepper. Does anyone have my phone?

I HEART you guys.

Now I'm going to go drink a gallon of water before orientation starts. :)

Have not read this thread in a while, got quite a few chuckles reading through the last few pages. I'm SO glad to hear that at least a few cool/reasonable/down to earth people will be starting this year.

So - even though you have probably already gone to orientation here is some advice: find people who like to party as much as you, befriend them b/c these are the people you will likely hang with for the next four years, do as little as possible b/c the work will start soon enough (they try and get you to do all sorts of busy work: none of it really mattered and was just formalities), go to the 'selected' bar every night (hopefully the rising second years found the good deals).

I guess things have gotten a little tighter on the professionalism council. For some reason there was a real push the year after we finished second year to dress like a professional for lectures (don't ask me why b/c basically you go to the FLH, sit there for two hours and then go home).

Also, I'm sure things have changed curriculum wise since my first year but we didn't ever use our stethoscopes first year and there will be a rep that comes and sells them - buy a good one (don't skimp on this).

Hope you’re having fun - and I really laughed at the comment that academic stress is better then applying stress. Gosh, just wait until your fourth year when you have to apply for residency. I'm in the midst of it right now and want to hang myself from my 11th story apartment balcony. But, you have a few years for that one ;) Enjoy yourselves!

So what are we thinking about tonight's event....carpool or cab? I don't mind driving if anyone wants to rotate.

And on a side note....my clinical visit today freakin rocked!! Don't want to violate HIPAA by discussing it on here, but it was definitely cool. ;)

Inpatient medicine over at the VA...started out kinda slow, but we got to see some action, which was cool. We have another clinical visit next Friday morning, and they told us that would be more exciting because we could follow them on rounds.

suzah q..why am I doing this at 3am while post nacho mamas.. no one really knows. viva la nacho mamas. i said nacho mamas twice :(

nothing quite as fun as doing things you know are a bad idea but following through anyway

i had a really awesome time tonight :)

Anyone have any idea what time the gym opens during the week? Searched school's site but had no luck. Thanx

You ordered around the same time as LW, right? I wonder if ours arrived yet.

And on a side note, thank goodness for the weekends and sleeping in!

I'm not sure when Coz ordered his stuff, but I still have not gotten a box from AllHeart. I will call them again tomorrow and see what is going on. They still have not responded to my email.

Was that a drunk post from Coz? You guys are too funny. I'm sorry I missed out on Friday night, but I was too busy trying to escort a couple of falling-down-drunk people home from Adams Morgan.

For future reference: if I walk up to you, smile, stick out my hand, and say, "Hi, my name is LadyWolverine," that is generally your cue to shake my hand, smile back, and tell me your name. Yes, this applies even if you are male and have a girlfriend. It is not an appropriate response to turn and start gesturing and pointing at your girlfriend like some kind of helpless deaf-mute. I'm terrible at charades, and I'm not going to understand you unless you open your mouth and start making sounds. Furthermore, if I approach you in this manner, don't panic - I AM NOT TRYING TO HIT ON YOU. The odds are that I wouldn't be interested, even if you were single. If I was trying to mack on you, you would know it. I am simply a friendly person by nature, and I am usually not shy about meeting new folks. I'm not in the habit of stealing other peoples' boyfriends, but I didn't know until yesterday that simply *speaking*to another woman in the presence of one's girlfriend could be considered cheating. Yikes.

Just call me L-Dub, the homewrecker.

Thanks for the tips, loveumms. I'll leave my stethescope at home for the time being.

My clinical visit kinda sucked - it was really short and we didn't see any patients. SQ definitely lucked out.

I ordered mine somewhere around when you did. I mean my order only had 2 scrubs vs. 20 so that might have something to do with it. When I finally got a shipped email the order date had changed to the date I called them. They seem real shady - won't get my business again.

and haha, I'm just glad I didn't say anything worse ;) Friday was a lot of fun, but Claddagh was major league crowded.

LW -did you have a bad experience over the weekend? I'm not offended when another woman introduces herself to Todd, and I think for a significant other to have an ugly response usually indicates low self-esteem or general unhappiness in their relationship. I hate when people take that crap out on you. Since when was being friendly and out-going a crime?

And where is LS? Still recovering from the tidal wave of meet-and-greets? Go to your happy place! ;)

Here is a helpful link for any fellow out-of-staters looking to see what qualifications they need to meet in order to get in-state tuition:

http://www.testudo.umd.edu/rco/faq.html

I think its better than the sheet they gave us when we interviewed, because it contains FAQs.

Yeah, I had a kind of off-putting experience on Saturday, before you guys arrived at the picnic. I only knew a couple of people at the park when I first got there, so I walked up to a group of students I didn't know - 3 girls and a guy - to introduce myself. The guy happened to be closest to me, so I walked over and said hello to him. He kinda looked at me like he was didn't know what to do, and started gesturing to the girl in their group that was furthest from him, but he didn't say a word! I really didn't get it. So I turned to the girl next to him, and introduced myself the exact same way, and she and the girl next to her were friendly. So then I get to the girl at the end, who is giving me this weird look, and she's like, "my name is so-and-so," and I turn back to the guy, who I figure will follow suit and introduce himself, but he still hasn't said a word, looks really uncomfortable, and is now *pointing* at the last girl, and she's like "that's my boyfriend." Then there was this really uncomfortable silence for a minute, so I said, "nice to meet you" and just walked away.

I got the feeling that he wasn't a student, but the boyfriend of one of our classmates. But does that mean he can't say hello? I've never seen Greg or Todd gesture wildly at LS or SQ when someone asks their name. Perhaps this guy isn't allowed to speak unless she gives him permission. This is the first time I've gotten a reaction like that during one of these meet-and-greet events, and it just rubbed me the wrong way.

Kinda like that "Oh....Hopkins." girl that first time we all went out in Canton back in April.

It annoyed me at the time, but now I think it's really funny. I wish I could remember what the dude looked like - I'd make it a point to go up to him at all our events from now on, and say (in a sultry voice), "Hey, baby, remember me?"

I'm here guys. Sorry, been MIA, doing wifey stuff, work stuff, etc etc.

Yeah, people are silly. You're at a "meet and greet" kind of event - you can't act all sketchy when someone tries to meet and greet you.

Incidentally, next time you see Greg, he's not allowed to speak to you, homewrecker.

LOL. Damn, you've figured me out. Single men bore me - I only came to med school because I enjoy the challenge of splitting up couples. I even put "wrecking homes" on my AMCAS application as one of my extracurricular activities. Oddly enough, all (save one) of my interviewers were male. ;)

Am I picking you up tomorrow morning? I don't think we have to be there until 9am. I still have that desk, too, if you want it.

Do we get our laptops tomorrow? I don't want to bring my laptop bag unless we're actually getting our computers.

I know, I actually just rememebered about the desk. Depending on what you're doing tomorrow afternoon, maybe I can swing by after we get out.

The blue schedule they gave us says we start up at 8:30am. I don't remember them telling us anything different, but maybe I wasn't listening. Does anyone else know for sure what time we are supposed to show up tomorrow? But anywho, yeah, I'd love a ride if you're game, but I would like to head to the registrar's office/cashier tomorrow afternoon after they let us go to figure out what's up with my loans, so if you have somewhere to head off to, let me know, and I'll just bike it. No biggie, either way.

Yes, we are definitely getting our laptops tomorrow. Yay!

***830 on TUESDAY. TOMORROW IS 9AM (MONDAY). at least i think***

We definitely start at nine. Someone announced it during the lecture on Friday...apparently Coz and Ari heard it, too. So I wasn't hallucinating...fancy that. I'll pick you up since we're getting our computers and lord knows what else tomorrow. I still need to go to the office to get my check as well, so we can head there after school. Remember, we have that duck tour thing tomorrow...not sure what time. Mayber we can hit the office between lecture/The Duck.

We should stop by Ari's house tomorrow morning for espresso. He lives close to the school. Pick you up a little after 8? I'll be up early, so call me whenever you're just about ready.

Thanks for the tip of the hat, LadyWolverine.

I honestly didn't know how popular these two threads were until a week or so ago. I usually just check the threads I'm subscribed to without visiting the regular forums. :p

Good luck with med school, folks. You're gonna love it. :D
