Umm, I'll run around and pretend like I know what I'm doing...

I don't even know what all the penalties and stuff mean 😕

But I'll try, as long as you don't laugh at me!

good god I am beyond tired this morning. it isnt even funny how exhausted I am.

That's because you were up so late. 😴

I have already had my daily quota of caffeine, and it's only 10:00. This is gonna be a long day.

Ditto. My husband had one of his "sleeping restless so I must elbow LS between the shoulder blades and in the temple several times without realizing it" nights. Um, I did NOT make it to the gym this morning. Again. Thank God for free coffee at work.

And SDN to keep me from doing work.

Lol! I've given up on trying to go to the gym in the morning. It's impossible for me to get up that early just to punish myself. I find it much more effective to beat myself up after work.

The Senseo machine at work is going to be the death of me. I've found myself hoarding the Gloria Jean's Irish Creme and Hazelnut flavored coffee pods, because those are the first to go, and then we're left with "French Roast" or some other ubiquitous (and flavorless) blend. But it's terrible, because I never was a coffee drinker until I started this job. Now it's like I suck down an industrial-sized mug every 10 minutes. And I get a KILLER headache on Saturdays when I don't go into work...caffeine withdrawal is the worst feeling in the world!
Shannon on Saturday morning = 😡

I used to do evening but my commute is just too far and after sitting in the car for so long, I just can't bring myself to go to the gym. Sometimes I would go to the one that is near work, but then I don't like to have a long drive home after working out. Can I whine any more? 🙄

Actually, I'm looking forward to not having a commute and to being able to work out after lecture, have lunch, and then hit the books. I think it'll be a nice routine if I can get into it. I'm also trying to find a place I like to do taekwondo a few times a week. I did it in college and would really like to get back into it if I can find the right dojang. Its a terrific stress reliever.

That sucks. My husband does the same thing. The next morning he'll say something to the effect of "wow, I didn't sleep very well last night." And I'll reply "I know, and ya took me down with you!" In his defense, though, I probably do the same thing sometimes. I think its just something you have to deal with when you share a bed with somebody. Maybe we should get a king size mattress? 😛

Damn, we got passed by Michigan again. Did I mention that I skipped my anthropology lecture this morning? Lol...I am such a lazy bum this semester.

I know. I thought a queen would be big enough. I obviously wasn't thinking. Its actually gotten better. There are some stories of when we were first married, and my husband had recently started going to the gym more often (so more testosterone was flowing I guess) and I would wake up in a head-lock or something. Once he bit me in his sleep - he dreamed we had a fight and I bit him first. 🙄 For awhile I thought I was going to need armor or something.

And in his defense, he's just bigger and takes up more space. Also, he sleeps much deeper than I do so even if I was guilty of "sleep spousal abuse," he wouldn't even notice.

That's one of the things I really, really love about Maryland's curriculum - early class to get you going in the morning, done by noon, and then plenty of time to work out. I can't imagine going to a school where you'd be in class 9-5 and then having time to exercise. I'd be exhausted! Either that, or I'd skip class and then feel guilty (I'm the kind of student who has to go to class to learn, but I can only focus for a couple of hours at a time!)
When I was in college/grad school, I always tried to schedule my classes this way...I always opted for the 8- or 9am classes, but I was usually done at a decent hour, or, if I had an afternoon/evening class, I had a long chunk of the day free in between.

You do tae kwon do? That's awesome. I tried to get into that when I lived in Seattle, but I only took lessons for a few months. It was so intimidating because it was a fairly established facility and there were very few beginners. Most folks there were advanced or blackbelts, and always felt out-of-place during class. Also, one of my instructors was really weird. But I liked all of the self-defense stuff that we were taught. How long did you take lessons for, and how far did you progress?

I did tkd for 4 years. At various points I was the president, vp, and/or treasurer of our college club. We ran as a kind of satellite school of a school in a nearby town. I called the Grand Master at this school yesterday and left a message and I'm waiting to see if he has anyone in Baltimore he knows/recommends. The program I was in was pretty hardcore; not one of those "you've been here x amount of time, you're promoted" which seem to proliferate. I was a blue belt with a red stripe when I graduate college; I expect I'd probably have to start over again at sweat belt (white belt) but I'm ok with that. I'm going to be pretty picky I think just because I know if its not the same caliber of the program I left, I won't be happy. I totally admit, I am a taekwondo snob.

Depending on the dojang, there are different belt systems. There is one with many more colors of belts that I don't understand. The one I studied at had this belt system (in between each belt you get a "stripe" of the next color up before advancing to the next belt level; between red and black there are two black stripes, all others have only one):

White
Yellow
Green
Blue
Red
Black

I used to do TKD when I was younger. I made it up to brown w/ stripe (which in my system was right before red, red/black, and black). I quit when the dojo got sold to a place that completely changed it into an americanized belt factory. I was on the demo team doing breaks and other cool stuff too. It was fun.

I wouldn't feel bad about being a snob. Real good MA places are hard to find.

My brother is a blackbelt in TKD. He trained with the club at UMBC, so you may want to check that out. I can't vouch for the quality of the training but my bro could nunchuk the hell out of me.

Straight up WTF (Olympic style) tkd does not use weapons. Nunchaku are Japanese in origin and the only Korean art (tkd is Korean) they are used in is a style that is patterned after karate. I think its called Songahm Taekwondo.

I'm not trying to be mean. I'm just trying to clarify what type of tkd I'm looking for.

The one with more colors is International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) and is not Olympic style. There are some other differences in the way things are done (what "proper" stance is and whatnot). I want to continue in WTF because that's what I know and also it is easier to find WTF competitions in case I decide I would like to compete.

I really want to avoid "fusion" arts. Where the head teacher has belts in multiple arts and sees fit to teach them in a big conglomerate. That's just not what I'm used to. We did a little Hapkido at my old school, but since that is such a different art, you knew which was which (Hapkido is all throwing and falling really - tkd is focused on kicking).

Eek! 😱 So confusing! How do you remember all this stuff??

I think I'll stick with triathloning...you don't have all those fancy belts and gradations to memorize. 😉

But I'll come and cheer for you at your comps, LS! Can you break boards and things with your bare hands? (Or is that an insultingly "americanized" version of MA? Pardon my ignorance!)

The belts aren't that hard to memorize, especially in the system I'm used to because there are less. You see them every day and you learn VERY fast who is your senior and who is your junior. No, breaking boards is real. We didn't do them at just any old time - generally just during promotion tests. There is a standardized thickness the wood is supposed to be (and its pine). The theory behind the board is that the standardized board is approximately the same strength as a human rib. If you learn your forms properly and you learn to direct force properly, you should be able to break one. The start you off with the easier kicks and whatnot - its easier to break a board with an axe kick when you're starting off. To do it with sidekick you need better form.

Oh and be warned, I'm a notorious recruiter for tkd. I think its just one of the best "life fitness" activities for anyone. My husband will try and get you to play poker. My hobby is better for you. 🙂

Poker! Who's in??

Right now we have a small multitable tourney at our apartment every other week. I'm sure he'll continue it when we move to Baltimore after we get settled. We've had as many as 35 before, right now we usually have around 20-25. If you'd like his e-mail Coz, I'm sure he'd put you on the list. Be warned, he's hardcore (ok, I play too but only b/c I'd be a poker widow if I didn't).

've never really been a big fan of poker. Not really a big gambler in general. I like card games, but I prefer more along the lines of spades/hearts/cribbage.

I'm going to Vegas in a month, though...so I guess I'd better learn to play a little better? 🙂

PS They should base the USNWR rankings on the SDN thread rankings. Maryland would be in the top 3!!

I played YMCA soccer when I was younger, does that count? 😀 I wouldn't mind playing again, but I'm sure I'm just terrible at it.

SuzieQ,

Why not, it counts! Yesssssss, +1. You might have to play defense if your dribbling skills are kinda rusty 😉 . Once you play a couple of times, you'll kind of get back in the mood; probably not as good as during your "YMCA years" but hey... you'll be able to do something. That's the point...having fun!

Cozmosis said:
I like spades, but cribbage? lol. aren't you not allowed to play cribbage until you hit 60 or something?

No, that's Bridge. Cribbage is actually fun! I learned to play it as a kid.

Coz, what do you know about Washington Village? Is it near the school? How ghetto is it? There are some condos in that area that I think I might take a look at.

It's really hard to get anything under $200K in the area. Looks like I'm going to have to find a roommate to rent from me.

LadyW,

Count yourself in! 😉 . But just do me a favor: remember that you won't be entering the field as a wolverine . You'll scare some souls and make some people forget that they are in a soccer field...it'll be more like a hunting field... The basic idea is having fun while actually doing exercise to relieve some of the medschool/med-environment stress. So why not?

Define hardcore 😉

Well we're one of the lower limit homegames in the area. The tourney is $25 +$5 overhead (we buy pizza and sodas and whatnot or I cook, and the $5 covers food).

After the tourney, or as soon as there are enough players and an empty table, there is a $0.50-$1 NL Hold'em cash game. This is one of the lowest limit games in the area. We do not take a rake.

And LW, don't get him started on the difference between "Games of Change 'gambling'" and "Games of skill 'gambling'." You'll get an earful. 😀 But seriously, Greg is just a big math dork, and poker is simply one of the more exciting math games out there because you have to take psychology into account.

For Greg, he has his own bankroll that poker money comes out of. We don't consider it part of the household funds and its best that way. If he ever lost it all, then he wouldn't play anymore for quite awhile. So he's smart with it. 😉

I think taekwondo could be a great stress reliever. I started Tang Soo Do; just another marshall art and loving it. I'm kind of new at it but I actually enjoy the classes. I decided to take a class on campus one semester and developed interest in it. Hopefully, I'll be able to find a SAFE place in B-more to continue with that.
The benefits of working out and "feeling" as if you've a long drive home is more than "feeling" all energized and riding home liked a super woman immediately after work  ...or am I the one seeing it that way. But I'm sure you'll find a balance to get your dose of exercise. I'm not a big fan of gyms. I do more of the outdoor sports/exercise like soccer and stuff. Tang Soo Doo is actually the only thing that seems indoor on my exercise/sports menu as of now. Just me...nothing wrong with gyms at all.

Just a really crappy neighborhood and it borders a very, very ghetto area

I would definitely not live there. Condos in Baltimore city are not going to be cheap in the slightest.

I realize this. But the idea is to buy a condo in an up-and-coming neighborhood so that, by the time I leave in 4 (or so) years, I'll have some equity. I just don't want to gamble with my life for the first year that I'm living there 🙂

What are the neighborhoods closest to the med school called? Do you know anything about Seton Hill, Mount Vernon, Lexington Terrace, or Heritage Crossing? These all seem to be North of the campus, while Washington Villae, Old Baltimore, Oterbein, and Federal Hill all seem to be South.

Use this website. The map is interactive and will give you an idea of the neighborhoods closest to UMAB.

Grr. I hate clients that are stupid and send me nastygrams. Newsflash people - if your compound kills half of the rats on study, it doesn't matter if it also kills cancer. Death is not considered a cure for cancer. If you don't like the fact that the study report reflects that your compound kills things, perhaps you should give up on developing this compound.

Yes, there is something like PBL or small groups or ICM (not sure exactly what) from 1-3 (1-4?), 2 afternoons a week.

I think you are crazy for trying to work full-time while in med school. But I like crazy folks. So good luck to you.

My own boss thinks I'm crazy, but he's not gonna turn down the opportunity to keep me on board for another year or 2. I figure 3rd year I won't be able to work, so I'll work as much as I can year 1 and 2.
I almost HAVE to work, if only to keep me on a good study schedule. If I have *too* much free time, I won't use it wisely (think TV, phone, SDN), conversely, if I have very little time to study...I think I'll study effectively. At least that's my plan. Thanks for the good wishes LW 🙂

um, yeah there won't be any free time even if you don't work.

Whaddya mean? We got people here going to the gym, playing soccer and cards etc.
Last time I been to the gym, Clinton was in office. If y'all ain't playing football, then don't count me in. And I'm nice with spades, but cribbage sounds like something to eat, so I won't be playing that either. Why not make a lil cash after school , maybe 2pm-10pm? Then study till 1 or 2 am weekdays, and on weekends. Sounds impossible?

I admit it'll be hard, but I'ma try. I'll be the guy in the back of the class wearing scrubs, and running to my car afterwards to head off to work. If anyone needs a job too, just holla!

Check out the Baltimore city crime map: http://141.157.54.34/bpdmaps/

You can search by address, neighborhood, school, etc and it shows the location of various crimes that were committed. Pretty useful if you ask me. If the link doesn't work, just google "Baltimore crime map" and it should be one of the first things that pop up.

Of course there will be free time. That's one of the best things about UMD. You learn the same things as people who go all day, but you're only there a half day. That = free time. Plus, I know people who go there..there is definitely free time.

Hey all....just wanted to let you know when I'll be coming to town. We officially booked plane tickets for a weekend visit from Thursday April 27 to Sunday April 30. Actually, it will mostly be on that friday and saturday since the flights are late at night/early morning. So whats the story? Do you guys want to get together? I was thinking about visiting the med school campus again, so maybe if anyone else was interested we could get a group together for a tour, sit in on a class, or anything else.
