Does anyone know what kind of laptop we will be getting? I'm trying to buy a new bag, but wanted to know what size laptop it will need to hold. Hopefully they won't give us something huge.

Look at the attached picture. Ms. Hicks gave me a tour last summer and I snapped this shot of one of the medical school students laptop. I"m not sure what year she was.

Nice pic. It looks like a T series Thinkpad.

I think they switched the kind of computer you get a couple of years ago too. When I had my tour, one of the 4th years described their computers as POS but she said that the 1st and 2nd years had much nicer ones. This doesn't really tell us much one way or the other regarding the posted picture, but just an interesting tidbit.

Thanks for posting the pic! Definitely a thinkpad, but I can't tell how large of one it is. I'll just wait until they hand them out, I guess. Either way its going to be a decent computer.

May 27 and 28, but CC is playing Sunday. I haven't seen them play since 2004, I miss them so much! Tickets are 45 for lawn, 65 for pavilion. They go on sale Saturday.

BTW, "WHFS" plays for like 3 hours a day on 102.7. Its a really weird arrangement.
I went through this phase 4-5 years ago where almost all I listened to was Ben Harper and Counting Crows. I don't know where it came from, but it was definitely great music. Unfortunately I think I overexposed myself to it, because I haven't listened to much lately. Have either come out with a new album since then? I wouldn't mind listening to them again.

Hi atlas,

Welcome to the class that's going to constitute one of the graduating classes of the UM with the finest doctors (2010) 👍 Nice having u on-board and as you've already started, feel free to keep it up. Great!

Couldn't get on here yesterday. Was so busy with classes and labs then work. Labs are not one of the best things for me to do... I rather be figuring out how those receptors "carry" insulin into the cell...lol. Hope everyone is doing great. Marylanders are always the best.
Dr. Foxwell was at UMCP on wednesday and I had an opportunity to talk to him. Great guy. At the end of his talk, a group of premeds surrounded him with their usual questions "I heard that ADCOMS do not like to see that students have taken MamPhys" No, take all the classes that you think is fun for you. I wonder where you heard that- that was Dr. Foxwell's reply. and the list of questions goes on...y'all know. Then when it came to my turn, I said that I last met him in Jan. when I came for my interview and b/4 I could complete my sentence, he said..."and you're waitlisted?" I said no, I"m in. He stated that it was a relieve to meet someone who has been accepted b/c those coming up to him are those who are complaining for being on the waitlist. He stated that on Tue, he was at JH and about 20 students walked to him and said that they were waitlisted. He also told me that this trauma surgeon (one of my interviewers) is now his assitant.

Great day everyone!

How ironic, I was one of those "20" students at JHU that came up to him. Actually, there were only 2 students, me and another girl. That IBM computer got me real jealous. I haven't had a working computer in years. I really need a new one.

Counting Crows has come out with album(s) since 2001, yes 🙂

I told you all it was an IBM. No one listens to lil ol me!

Posting this weekend has been pitiful!
Wow..that's an understatement. I just got back into town after visiting my sister and her husband and the new house they are building out in Kansas. As nice as their house is, going there made me realize (yet again) why I don't think I could live in Kansas (well, besides Kansas City, KS).

I had a heck of a time getting a downtown hotel in Baltimore for the weekend I'm coming down (April 27-30). Obviously I was trying to take advantage of the University of MD discount, but I guess each hotel only offers limited rooms each night with that rate and so a lot were already completely booked. They asked me if I would still like to book a room and I think my jaw nearly hit the floor when they told me the normal rate. Long story short, I finally got ahold of one of the Inner Harbor hotels and secured the cheapo rate so all is well. 🙂 Yay Baltimore! I'm so excited to come down. We still need to figure out a definite time/place to get together for any who are interested. You guys probably know the area better than me, so I am open to suggestions (Nacho Mama's anyone?) Lol.

I think our fort has too few people right now. LW's got the list...how many are we up to on this here thread?

Its an IBM T42p. It does everything you need it to do believe me. And if you break it, they give you a new one. What else could a boy ask for?
Good luck Everybody

Wow... you're not kidding. I haven't really had any time this weekend, otherwise I would've helped out 🙁 Seems like everyone was away from home this weekend or something.

That's funny that you bring up Dr. Foxwell being at UMD. My sister was at that meeting and spoke with him for a bit. It's rather amusing...I could almost picture all of the other cutthroat pre-meds glaring at her because he knows who she is and actually spent some time talking to her. She came with me to UMD to visit back in January, and decided that she liked the school, the hospital, and the admissions staff so much that she could see herself spending 4 years there in med school. So now she's signed up for the MCAT and is a class of 2011-hopeful. Now I just have to get her on SDN 🙂

And I still only have 7 or so folks on the list, SQ. Talk about pitiful! Come on, UMD, where are you all?! 😕

Not that I don't love our current little group, but we're starting to look pathetic compared to some of these other schools with serious representation!

Oh, yeah, I spent most of today in Baltimore looking around at the neighborhoods. Let just say that I was not impressed. The Inner Harbor/Federal Hill area is nice, but sooooo expensive. I looked at some of the rowhouses West of campus (past MLK Blvd). I thought that perhaps they were ok, but some of the areas looked pretty seedy. Even the areas near the "nicer" apartment buildings (e.g. the Redwood, Marlboro) seemed pretty bad. There are no trees or grassy areas anywhere, and the neighboring architecture seemed run-down and decrepit. Despite how much I really love the med school and the hospital, I don't think I'll ever really feel safe in the area. Safety is probably now my biggest concern in my ongoing home-search. The crime statistics for the area around campus are truly sobering.

That's pretty much what I've been saying all along. Love the school, etc, but the area is so awful. What I wouldn't give for UMD to be in a more suburban area, or at least a better area of the city.

I knew it was bad. I just didn't realize how bad until I actually tried to picture myself living there this weekend. I used to live on Alki Beach in West Seattle, where I used to fall asleep at night with my door unlocked. Before that, I lived in Ann Arbor, which, at the time, boasted one of the safest college campuses in the country. Now I live in a NW suburb of DC where the closest thing to a crime is the neighborhood high-schoolers drinking beer at the local park. This is going to be a complete and total culture shock for me. I'm not used to feeling on-guard all the time, and I'm terrified of slipping back into the sense of security that I have been fortunate enough to have these past few years of my life. Because it'll only take that one time I'm walking across the street from my car after coming home from the library at midnight.

Ugh. I really hate having to think about these things.

Maybe looking like a scary clown isn't such a bad thing after all, if it'll keep the muggers away.

That scary clown tactic just might do the trick. My mom bought me a key-chain whistle...not sure how much good that will do. I also have mace (sp?) that fits in a purse, but I'm not sure where that is at the moment. I won't be going anywhere by myself once it gets dark out, that's for sure. They have several shuttle/escort services that are free to students that I might take advantage of. It might be inconvenient having to wait for those, but it beats the hell out of getting mugged.
Honestly, I didn't think the area looked all that bad when I visited. Having lived in St. Louis for the first 16 years of my life I've certainly seen worse.

hi hi. i've been lurking this thread for the past 2-3 weeks and am now heeding the call for maryland matriculants. 🙂 i'm considered a maryland resident by the school (since i grew up there and my parents still live there), but am currently living out of state. i'm a year out of college and am looking forward to starting med school.

the most recent posts seem to be regarding real estate... i would have offered my help as a maryland resident, but i grew up in the suburbs outside baltimore, so am not familiar with the area near the SOM at all.. sorry!

well in any case, just wanted to add my voice to all the others. see ya'll in a few months. actually.. maybe sooner than that since i'll probably be doing the psp.

Welcome to the club! Are you up for some food and drinks the last weekend in April? 😉

=/ unfortunately, i won't be able to return to baltimore until late May because of work. i'd take a short vacation for that weekend, but i'm taking 5 days this coming week and won't have any left over. 🙁 maybe the first week of school?

Wheee!!! Another PSPer. I'm doing the PSP, and so is Gonadotropins. I'll see you there.

Just look for the scary clown, kinda like Tim Curry in "It."

No prob...I'm sure we'll have many weekends of food and drink to look forward to. (and of course loads of intense studying, but I try and live by the work hard, play hard mentality)

So based on the class of 2009 thread, it looks like financial aid packages came out around April 15th. Random musing that no one will have an answer to: do you think we'll be getting ours before or after Easter weekend. The 15th is a Saturday, but Friday is Good Friday - are they closed (since its a state institution)? Will we get them on Monday the 17th?

Why am I thinking about this - is it really important? 🙂

In a word, YES.

I, for one, am very curious as to the contents of said FA package, from other schools as well as UMD. As I've said all along, this will make or break the deal for me. So, yes, LS, it is very important. 🙂

It doesn't make as much of a difference for me at this point. My state school is hardly offering me anything in terms of scholarship money, so the FA package of Maryland is a moot point. If they somehow scrape together a scholarship for an out-of-stater like myself I would be ecstatic, but I have a feeling it is rather unlikely. Luckily I have no undergraduate debt, though, so I think it gives me a little more flexibility as far as choosing a school I would rather go to as opposed to the one that offers me the best financial aid deal (though I'm no fool...if some school gave me a half/full tuition scholarship I would go there in a heartbeat).

That's pretty much where I'm at. Though I don't think I would have gone to Albany even if they had offered me a full scholarship (which wasn't going to happen so no biggie). I'm know I'm going to UMD, but I am getting a bit obsessive over finding out more and more details. Sigh. Maybe if I try actually focus on my JOB, I will not get fired before leaving at the end of July.

Aw yeah, bustin out the new avatar baby!
I'm diggin it.

As far as financial aid, are they going to let us know just on the website, or do you think they'll mail us everything also? I checked today and they've received all of my paperwork, but obviously they haven't allocated aid yet for the 2006-2007 year. I'm just curious if it goes up on the web first, since they seem so keen on doing everything through SIMSWEB.

So all the forms I sent in were completed, but if we don't need the preliminary notification form (aka no outside aid), is it cool if we leave it unsatisfied? It says not to fill it out otherwise.

I filled it out and just left everything empty or wrote N/A in that space. I just assumed it needed to be filled out regardless, even though it seemed a little redundant since another form asked the same thing.

I didn't even fill out that form. I never included it in the bunch of forms that I mailed to the School and online, besides preliminary notification, there's the notification "waived". I think that does it for me.

Yes but it says only return this if you have outside resources to claim in big bold red letters 🙂
Lol...I must have misread it or something. I thought the form I printed said not to fill in a certain part or sign if you didn't have any outside resources to claim. I wonder what the heck I filled out? Oh well, its probably not that big of a deal either way...hopefully I didn't just screw myself out of financial aid. 😉

SQ, I also filled out that form...I left the part about the outside resources blank, but there was a place to sign it, so I did and faxed it over. I figured that they wanted it documented that I don't anticipate any outside help. So, now they have it. 😀

I wouldn't worry too much!

PS...

WOOHOOOOOO!!!! We're beating U of M! And we've only got about 400 more posts to go before we catch up with OK!

Only 400 posts...we can do that. Anyone have a topic to get us started?

There were two places to indicate outside resources: one was on the form where you chose a lender and the second was the separate form you didn't have to fill out unless you did have outside resources. There was a space on the form you didn't have to fill out that said if you weren't going to fill it out to call them so they can waive it for you. They did mine automatically (its now listed as waived on SURFS), but you should probably just call the financial aid office to get them to waive it.

new topic.... how about food & restaurants!

maryland is, of course, known for their crabs. and i do have to say, i've never had crab cakes that were better than maryland blue crab cakes. seattle's dungeness crabs cakes are close, but still doesn't trump. there's a few good seafood restaurants in the harbor, like phillip's.

good steak can always be found at ruth's chris steakhouse. not sure what other steak restaurants are in baltimore... haven't lived there in a few years.

i'm a fan of sushi, but i don't think baltimore has any famous sushi restaurants. 🙁 DC has a few i think.

do you guys know of any other good places in the area to eat?

i think my mind might be fixated on food right now because it's almost lunchtime.

PHILIPS!!! Yummy. Baltimore has good seafood, although not as good a Seattle (but I'm biased!)

I agree that MD crabcakes consistently get the most rave reviews (even though I hate crabs.) I think it's the Chesapeake Bay blue crabs that are everyone's favorites.

I don't eat steak, so I can't recommend a place. But I'm sure there are plenty of places to get your turf fix.

And I went to a Baltimore (Inner Harbor) restaurant about a year ago that had really good sushi, as well as pan-asian cuisine. I think that it was called Purple Orchid or something? The owners are Chinese, and I think it started out as a Chinese restaurant, but they started adding bits of Japanese and Thai cuisine, maybe some Korean. (I got really sick recently eating Korean food, so I have to watch it.) 🙁

Anyhoo, I have been obsessed with Thai for the past few months. I can't seem to get enough Tom Kah, Seafood Kaprow, or Green Curry. There's a place in Dupont Circle in DC called Thai Chef that has FANTASTIC Thai food, great sushi, and kickass happy hour specials (on sushi and drinks!)

I think we should pick a restaurant for the weekend of the 27-28th where we can have a nice dinner and hang out/get to know each other. Does anyone have any allergies/dislikes? I still like the "margaritas in hubcaps" idea the best! And I haven't had tex-mex in a while. Cheese enchiladas!!!! Yummy...

I'll eat just about anything. I've never had crabcakes or sushi, but I'll try almost anything once (well, maybe not anything...I don't plan on trying insects any time soon). If you guys don't mind, can we pick something in the general vicinity of Inner Harbor and the Med School? We're being cheap and not renting a car while we're there, so I'd prefer some place within walking distance or short taxi ride.

It is getting excrutiating trying to focus these last few weeks of class. Thoughts of Baltimore keep popping into my mind, and I found myself dreaming of loft apartments last night. Needless to say, I am also really excited about the last weekend in April and getting to hang out with all you cool folks.

OMG, I was over at my mom's house the other day, and she had gotten a catalogue from a big realty company that had prime properties in the area (MD/DC/VA/Southern PA). For example, there was a $16.5 million mansion on the water in DC, a penthouse condo by the DC monuments, and the like. One of the properties was a GORGEOUS luxury condo in Baltimore (inner harbor)...it had a really cool loft, a big bar that could fit like 8 people, big windows, a huge living room, 12' or higher ceilings....it's so nice! Anyway, I can dream on, as the price tag was over $500K. Of course, it wasn't as bad as some of the other properties with >1 mill tags.

I figure, if 4 of us can come up with 150K loans, maybe we can combine hem and make an offer on that penthouse? 😉

SQ, you don't like chocolate-covered grasshoppers? what's up with that?!

Don't worry about vicinity - I can totally pick you guys up/drop you off. If you don't mind riding in my 10-year-old car 🙂 That way, I'll have to limit myself to 1 or 2 hubcap-ritas.

And I, too, am finding it increasingly difficult to concentrate. I want to quit so bad! But I can't because then I won't be able to get such a great mortgage. 🙁 So I'll stick it out another month or so.
