(And Trading Places is CLASSIC. I highly recommend you rent it and watch it! The train scene is so funny! Dan Akroyd dresses like a Rastafarian and JLC pretends to be Swedish. It's awesome.)

Hmm.. I think I see another possibility for a SDN Maryland get together some weekend after school starts...

I'll bring the popcorn!! 👍

Can we watch Labyrinth, too? Nothin' like David Bowie in HOTPANTS!

matsuri in fed hill... XS is also good in Mt Vernon, both are much better than Purple Orchid.
Blue Agave is some of the best Mexican ever.
Sobo cafe is in Fed hill and is very good american.
The Ambassador has the best Indian - its over by hopkins undergrad.
Kumari is delicious nepalese.
Bicycle is my all around favorite when I have money.
Metropolitan = good coffee, food, and wine + coffeeshop and free internet.
Afghan Kebab is downtown and is delicious.
Ok thats that.
Also Pazo and Tapas teatro are great tapas places, the latter being at the Charles Theatre, and Pazo having one of the coolest buildings in Baltimore.

new topic.... how about food & restaurants!

maryland is, of course, known for their crabs. and i do have to say, i've never had crab cakes that were better than maryland blue crab cakes. seattle's dungeness crabs cakes are close, but still doesn't trump. there's a few good seafood restaurants in the harbor, like phillip's.

good steak can always be found at ruth's chris steakhouse. not sure what other steak restaurants are in baltimore... haven't lived there in a few years.

i'm a fan of sushi, but i don't think baltimore has any famous sushi restaurants. 🙁 DC has a few i think.

do you guys know of any other good places in the area to eat?

i think my mind might be fixated on food right now because it's almost lunchtime.

Oh, how I hate that guy.

Wow, I'm gone for one day and this shiz totally blows up! Do we have new folks now? Galdoc, what high school did you go to? I grew up in Mont. County as well.

And who said that they were born in Cameroon? That rocks!!! Did you ever see that movie, "Trading Places" with Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd and JLC? Do you remember the scene on the train when Eddie Murphy pretends to be the foreign exchange student from Cameroon?

"It's BEEF JERKY TIME!!! Do you want some beef jerky?!?"

LW,
I went to springbrook for a semester, but graduated from mont. blair HS (go blazers!!!). I don't quite remember the movie "trading places", but i saw Eddie Murphy in "coming to America", and no one does an african accent like eddie murphy.

OMG Labyrinth! Let's watch that one. Lol...I love awesomely bad 80's movies.

gd: Blair? That's cool...I'm a WJ Wildcat myself.

And Coming to America is a great movie, too. I'm a big Eddie Murphy fan!! The man cracks me up.

Thanks, Frostybrandx, for the restaurant review...I especially like the sound of the indian joint. I haven't had good indian food in eons.

SQ, what other totally bad 80's movies do you love?!? Do you remember "Legend" with Tom Cruise when he was like 10, and that chick from Ferris Bueller (yet another one of my favorites). Tim Curry was the Devil? Sooooooo bad.

I have so many favorites!

I saw that movie last year when I was staying in a hotel...I dragged my husband into the room just to see if he agreed that it was actually Tom Cruise! I couldn't believe it, because I don't think Tom Cruise would ever claim ownership to that movie. Didn't it revolve around unicorns or something? Hmm...how about Willow, did you ever see that? The Princess Bride is also a good one, though I wouldn't place that in the "awesomely bad" category...its actually a decent movie in my opinion.

What about cheesy movies from the early 90's? I love Newsies....

So I interviewed late March 27th and called today to see if they got my LOI, after being put on hold for a few the secretary said they got it then told me to sit down and said the committee met on Monday and I'm in, my letter goes out next Monday! So excited, now I can finally be apart of this thread. Ha. Seriously though, I won't totally be comfortable until I physically get the letter but just saying Hi to all of you.

Welcome to the club and congratulations!

Financial Aid is up on the SIMS/SURFS website. Anybody get any surprises? (mine is all federal loans so no surprise there)

SQ, I OWN Willow. I used to be in love with Val Kilmer (when I was like 9).

TPB is one of my all-time favorites. I've already warned my sister that, at her wedding (whenever she decides to get married), I'm gonna stand up and proclaim, "MAWWAGE. MAWWAGE IS WUT BWINGS US TOGEVA...TODAY."

Thanks for the match list link, LS. That rocks. I was wondering when that would come out. As for the list...there's only 8 or 9 on it now. I wanted to get to 10 before I sent it out. And new folks, please PM me with your info!!

when i logged into my SIM/SURF account, it still says "no award information has been recorded for this upcoming academic year. Anybody with a similar problem? or should i be scared?

Other than federal loans I got:
MD/SAL Scholarship Offered $1,000.00
MD/University Grant Offered $3,000.00

What's that scholarship? Hmm...

Coz, I was awarded the same stuff. I think that the Grant is pretty much standard to MD residents, as long as you submit your FAFSA early enough. I applied for the Maryland Professional School Scholarship (or something to that effect), as well as wrote Senators, Congressmen, and Delegates...I wonder if it came from one of those sources? It won't put a big dent in the loans, but every little bit definitely helps!

What is REALLY disconcerting is this entry:

MD/Federal Workstudy Offered $2,339.00

Does this mean that I need to get a job? 😕

I don't get it...I think I'll be contacting the OFA on Monday morning.

LucidSplash said:
Mine isn't up yet either. 🙁 What gives? You think they do it alphabetically? My last name begins with a W...

I don't think so....my last name begins with an A...

Guys, I wouldn't worry yet. They probably do it quicker for people who got in earlier. Probably have to get things in order.

LW, I didn't apply for anything. If you got offered work study, you checked on the FAFSA you were interested in work study. I checked it, but wasn't offered any (don't care, don't want it). All it means is that you can take jobs that pay salary out of fed. work study. You don't have to do anything with it, just accept it. The amount given is the total amount you can make from the fed. govt by working under FWS.

I'm not worried, just the world's least patient, most neurotic person. 🙄

lol LS! We wouldn't be pre-meds if we didn't have these obsessive neuroses...I think this means you'll make a great doc! (although I don't think it's possible to be more neurotic than I am. Just ask your husband...I think I maxed out his inbox today regarding B'More real estate.)

Coz, you suck! I spent all that time and effort contacting people and sending faxes, and I get the same thing that you did! 😡 OK, I'm going to be lazy from now on, since being proactive apparently gets me nowhere.

Whew, back home after 20+ hours of driving. these past few days have been taxing... yet work still labels it "vacation." 5 posts/day huh? =/ looks like i'm way behind.

Alright! It's looking more and more like a legitimate ensemble. lol Are you going to try and play in med school?

SuzieQ3417 said:

i guess that depends on how much time med school affords (i'm still not sure what the workload will be like). but certainly i'd love to play on a pick-up basis. haha that sounds funny "pick-up ensemble." the cello's been gathering dust for the past 3 years, but i'm sure my fingers can work off the rust with some practice.

Coz, 👍 for the similar taste in beer. i'll buy you a round if we can find a bar/restaurant that has it on tap.

I was mighty surprised when I first tried the Sam Adams cherry wheat. I like wheat beers but am not big on cherry flavoring, and I thought it was really good. Have you tried their summer ale seasonal yet? We bought some of that from the store last week, and it is also very good (though much lighter in taste than some of the others)

how do you find out about getting into PSP? email? snail mail? i'm getting antsy.

the pizzeria uno's in boston that i frequent has cherry wheat on tap. i'm not sure if that's a restaurant-wide thing or specific to that one uno's. i'll have to do some investigating.

I was emailed about my acceptance to the program the day after I faxed it in. That being said, I also emailed the Program Direction (I remember that her first name is Donna, but I don't remember her last name) waaaaaaay back, right after my interview (in mid-October), to let her know that I was interested. I think they would tend to take people who definitely display a marked interest in the program. After I faxed over my application form for the program, I emailed her again the next day just to confirm that it had arrived. I also asked if writing a letter describing the reasons for my interest in the program would help me to get a spot. She emailed me back about an hour later with my acceptance.

I guess that being a nag goes get you what you want sometimes. 🙂

SpeedRacer, PM me your info! You can be #10 on the list!

omigod that's great advice. i can't find the program director's name on this PSP pamphlet thing though. do you have the email address??? i sent the thing in weeks ago and am dying to get in.

Edit: nevermind, i found it off the website

also i don't want to pm my personal information because i've posted on sdn this whole time knowing i was anonymous. not that i've put bad things up or anything, but still

i'd lay a few bucks down on the bet that there are at least 5 more UMD matriculants lurking the thread. you guys should post!

FYI to those that didn't have award information up on Friday - mine's up now. I'm all loans. 🙁 But at least the gap between financial aid and the budget isn't that big. I was scared it would be bad given that my husband works.

Cozmosis said:
You think we have an extra 5 waiting?

yeaaaahh. you're probably right - maybe there aren't any lurkers. but i figure people will surface once they start to lock into their med school decision.

Hey Speed,
That's cool. I'm not actualy posting anyone's name on SDN; that's what the "email" entry is for. But I understand if you want to stay anonymous.

Let me know if you get into the PSP. I'm definitely doing it, and will (hopefully) meet you there!

btw, can I comment on how much ass we are kicking? We have outstripped Michigan by about 50 posts, and pretty soon (if status remains similar) we'll be rivaling Oklahoma.

👍
