hi all!

congrats to everyone that got in and good luck to everyone that is still on the waitlist! i was just wondering if anybody had talked to patrice about the current status of the baltimore waitlist? i was just enrolled into shady grove yesterday and was considering whether to put my name in for baltimore. she wouldnt tell me how many people were on the list, but she said there were "quite a few". she also wouldnt give me a ranking so i was wondering whether it still goes sequentially or randomly. finally im wondering if they are waiting for that late interview on apr 7th to tell people on the baltimore wait list cause they may want to save some spaces for the late interviewees?? happy friday everyone!

Can SG students tell me what the atmosphere is like on campus. Is there a lot to do? I know the class size is 40 but do you get to interact with people outside pharmacy because I know there are other universities that use shady grove as well. Also how easy is to get to rotations? I just kind of want to get a sense of the living environment there

I called today and she said that there are 12 people on the baltimore waitlist and that the list is ranked not first come first serve. She said that rankings havent been determined yet

That's strange because she told me my ranking. I asked specifically what my waitlist position would be if I dropped shady grove. Hmmm... maybe that's something she can only tell to the actual people on the waitlist?

I also thought that there was someone else who had a specific position on the waitlist b campus, i think they were #2?

thats really interesting. i really want to go to baltimore but now im unsure of what to do. does anyone have any predictions about the likelihood of 12-13 people getting off the baltimore waitlist? any current students know what happened in past years with the waitlist? ahhh im so confused about what to do! can anyone also tell us more about SG versus Baltimore so we can get a better idea of how it would be like to live/ study there? thanks a lot!

also, tojh1, i see from your previous reply that you are #1 on the baltimore waitlist? would you mind please keeping us posted on if you are enrolled so we can tell if the waitlist is actually moving? thanks! :)

I will keep you guys updated, don't worry. Also the thing about the differences between the two... you should search this forum because a lot of things have been said.

Hopefully something will happen this coming week... although I don't have my hopes up too high.. there is another interview at umb this thursday.

I never really thought about the differences btwn both campuses. if anything Ive always leaned towards Grove, coz not only do I have buddies over there, but I was hoping twill b easier 4 me 2 commute. when I applied, I went with Sgrove. However, when I got accepted, and was given the option to choose, I went with Bmore after considerable thought. My main reason was that it was gonna b better to commute for me, to Bmore (insane traffic on 495 and 270)....plus a buddy in SG told me to go with bmore, simply bcoz I told him my commute is the deciding factor being in SG and knowing where i live, he suggested if traffic was gonna b an issue, it will b moreso with SG). Im saying this coz I see u r really split. I knw how the feeling may be ,esp if ur mind is set on somthing already. its like craving for ice cream, then u get a great sandwich.both are good, but u just felt like iceCrm at that moment.
Look at it this way first and foremost U got acceppted into not only pharm school, but UMB. 1 year ago, wen u were applying wit pharmcas, I bet u would have settled for the Baghdad campus hein?. am not sayin u shld not aim for ur dream, jst remember dat the two are no different. students from both campuses swab all the time. Im pretty sure 70% of the SG chose it as their 1st choice. its jst dat 1 mans meat is another mans poison.

here is what u shld consider wen deciding....Do I want to gamble it and lose the whole opportunity,? (I know i'll personally switch to med school shld I have to do this all over). Can u live with urself knowing that a little more patience/balls would have landed u in ur campus of choice? (wld suck if u punk out, and then come to find out u basically had a 100% chance of getting in, shld u have tried).
So there u go and welcome again mate! FYI i stand to b corrected, my buddy said their campus was doing better for thier batch...but then again wen he starts talking he never stops. Said it had something to do wit the level of maturity of the demographics...but hey, dont quote me! i say take with a grain of salt

When I spoke to her, she wouldn't let me know how many people were in the list. However, she said that the list will go up according to ranking, not based on who calls in first.

Here's another benefit to going to SG....you get the rotations you want...I am a second year and we just got our 2 3weeks rotations for the summer and pretty much everyone in SG is happy with what they got. I can't say the same for Baltimore. Some people in Bmore didn't even get a site or they were forced to do the rotation in the winter time over Christmas break (12/19 - 1/6). There's 120 students in Baltimore competing for the same sites while there's only 40 students in Shady Grove competing for as much sites as there are in Baltimore (roughly 60% of the sites are in Baltimore area, 40% in SG area). Plus, everyone in Shady Grove have a car so we can do rotation sites in Baltimore if we want to (it's much more expensive to own a car in Baltimore).

In SG, I have the opportunity to get to know all my classmates and we tend to get together after exams/labs/group activities and dine at the school amazing cafeteria (Bon Appetite) or drive to places like iHop. The Universities of Shady Grove have their own SGA and Student Event Board that put on a lot of events where you can meet others from the different schools (we just had an Etiquette dinner that was served and prepared by the cooking school and next up we have Casino Night). Check out the school's website http://www.shadygrove.umd.edu/

Just remember, whether you choose to go to Baltimore or SG, we are one school! It just depends on what type of living environment you want, a city (Bmore) or more suburban (SG) feeling. The good thing about SG is that it is close to DC, so if you want a city life, it's only a metro ride away!
I love both campuses and I honestly will you say that you will be fine no matter which campus you are at. Remember, you are not limited to anything in Baltimore if you do choose to attend SG.

i think ill probably go with SG :) luckyphooey, your responses have been very helpful, do you think theres anything else we should know about the SG campus?!

Lucky, I totally agree with everything you said!! Also, they offer interdisciplinary classes at SG - like first year I took a health forensics class offered through the nursing school. There were nursing students, pharmacy students and crim justice people from UMCP. We were forced to work in random groups so we had to interact, but other than that we don't really mingle with the other schools. As Lucky said there is an SGA and stuff so there is opportunity to interact if you want to. They even have local high school students taking college level classes so its a random mix of people on campus. They are also starting a new interdisciplinary class for next year, not sure what it is though (I won't be there! !!)

Side note: You can take up to 6 credits of electives from other schools, as long as they are approved ahead of time.

there are several dual degrees, including MBA, PhD, JD, MPH etc. I honestly don't know much about it because I don't have a bachelor's degree so I don't think im eligible to do those programs (not 100% sure though). I am sure they will discuss this with you at welcome day/orientation.

Also, regarding the wait list - current students/anyone on here have absolutely NO idea what will happen with the list and how many people will get in etc. we all want you to get in but there is no way to predict!! sorry we cant give you any answers.....

There are currently 6 faculty members at Shady Grove; Dr. Knapp (former Dean of the SOP for 17years), Dr. Congdon (SG's Dean), Dr. Angelo (formerly worked for APhA and author of the APhA Handbook on Immunization), Dr. Sullivan (sadly, she's leaving this year), Dr. Charneski (Residency Director at Suburban Hospital), and Professor Williams. We have an amazing Coordinator, Lisa Reidenauer, she's our liaison to Baltimore (because of her, you do not have to go to Baltimore to turn in paperwork/forms!).

Right now there are two organization based in Shady Grove, the DC Metro Student Pharmacists Association and the professional geek organization Phi Lamda Sigma (LKS). LKS used to be based in Baltimore, but a SG student took it over and it slowly shifted to being SG-oriented. We also have a branch of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) at SG also. All other organizations have SG Liaisons and are held synchronously via telecommunication.

I JUST GOT IN TO SHADY GROVE!!! I just called to accept. See you all in the fall!

I called today and she said that there are 12 people on the baltimore waitlist and that the list is ranked not first come first serve. She said that rankings havent been determined yet

Whoa, 12 people on the waitlist?! When I first called Patrice (Mid-March) she told me I was #98 on the waitlist and I called last week and she told me I was in the 70's.

I highly doubt there are only 12 on the waitlist for Baltimore. Unless you're talking about people who got into SG and chose to WL for Baltimore.

Congrats! Can I ask what your number was on the wait list initially (mid-March) or were you never waitlisted?

The waitlist for Baltimore just moved up, because I just received the acceptance email. Good luck for everyone still on the waitlist! :)

Congrats!! I just got my acceptance mail into Baltimore campus as well! So i guess they are doing batches. Good luck to everyone who is still waiting!!!

Can't wait to meet everyone!

CONGRATS!!

Time to relax :)

I recently got accepted to SG and really excited, but I worried about the tuition costs.

I'm from California and I am trying to get a feel for how likely it is to get instate tuition. I read the criteria and the only one I can't do is pay income tax in Maryland because working is not a viable option while being a full time student at the pharmacy school. I would like to live in Maryland and work there after I finish pharmacy school, but I don't know how to convey that to admissions committee if I can't meet every standard on their criteria. Does anyone have any advice?

To current students, have you seen out of state students struggle to receive instate tuition? From my understanding, it seems more difficult to achieve this then it is in other states and so I am concerned.

Got accepted to Baltimore campus a couple days ago. Hard decision to make now. I live in Pittsburgh, got into Pitt, already have job as a tech (intern as soon as the paperwork goes through) in a chain here, have 2 people willing to go in on an apartment, etc.

Tough decision. REmember though, you'll have to start a whole new future here in maryland otherwise. tuition is more because of out of state, unless you find the chain you were looking for here, you'll have to start searching again for connections. Roommates are not a problem though... so easy to search for them, even the ones that fit in with your personality.

BUT! I still think MD is a great school, of course theres a little bias because I've been living here almost my whole life, everything is familiar to me.

Just don't regret! Whichever school you goto I think you'll get a great experience!

Pitt is ranked highly, and it sounds like you are already set up there, plus there will be tuition differences. I do not think you will regret living in either place, but I, personally, would probably pick Pitt in your situation. This assumes you view the schools roughly equally. If you really really liked Maryland over Pitt, or if you are tired of living there or want to leave for whatever reason, then maybe that would sway it the other way. (Note that I have not visited Pitt.)

WOAHHHHHHH just got my acceptance letter!!! I interviewed last week and got it just now, campus choice too...so exciting, it hasn't even sunk in yet! anyone have a link to the facebook group? i cant find it online.

hey guys, would anyone living at p-row be able to send me some pictures of the inside? i talked to the housing department and they said they wont be able to show me the 2 bedroom apartments. so if anybody could possibly send me some pix i would greatly appreciate it. even pictures of the studio would be fine.

thanks :)

I called them earlier today, and they said that there would be no 2 bedroom apartments available this upcoming Fall. They said everyone already signed their leases. :( But they said the studios and the 1 bedroom apartments are still available.

Would anyone recommend any other place for people looking to have their own bedroom but with a shared apartment? I'll be visiting the area for the Welcome Day in June, but I'm afraid any apartments that might be good will be taken by then. I'll be coming from California as well, so it'll be hard for me to be able to check the places out for myself.

Hey Purplecow, I was wondering if by no more 2 bedroom apts, the office meant no more in p-row or in all on-campus housing.

I'm from CA too, and am actually looking into Fayette options. I've actually been debating whether or not to go to Welcome Day. They mention that it'll be a good opportunity to meet future roommates, but does anyone know if I wait until June to apply for on-campus housing, spaces will already be filled up?

They are really hard to get info out of. Even in the facebook group, although a bit more info has been leaking through.

I just kind of want someone from each "typical" place, like Fayette, or P-row, or Camden, or Ridgeley's to come out and say exactly how they did it, the prices, the drawbacks, the benefits etc. Maybe add in things that we wouldn't know to ask about. Like parking issues or something you'd only know if you live there. Instead a lot of answers are "some students go here or there" without much elaboration. Not very helpful. I am also from CA, and I'm struggling to make my mind up on housing based on the little I know.

From a previous poster...

Housing information can be found here for both Fayette, Pascault Row, and off campus: http://www.housing.umaryland.edu/
Pricing can be found through the website.

Fayette Square:
- About 2 blocks from school (3-4 minute walk)
- My view is that pharmacy school is hard enough, why not be comfortable where you sleep and study? So if you were to ask for my preference it would be Fayette (even though it's so expensive!)
- Very pretty, very comfortable but again, SO much more expensive
- Access to the following: vending machines on the 2nd floor, a free gym on the 2nd floor, FREE coffee/hot water for tea machine in the lounge, FREE office that contains a free fax machine and 3 computers and a copy machine (have to pay to use that), and an atm in the lounge area.
- If you are a living room type of person (some people like to just stay in their rooms) 4 bedrooms is the best. It's cheapest and you get the biggest kitchen, bedrooms, and living rooms in comparison to all the different apartments. The 4 bedroom apartments have 2 bathrooms and 4 sinks (outside of the bathroom).
There are 2 bedroom apartments (the A room always has the bathroom inside of the room; while the B room has the bathroom outside).
The 3 bedroom apartments have the least space (they share 1 bathroom though you do get 3 sinks).
- You have to supply your own floor lights. Only lights given are in the bathroom, the kitchen, and one small light by the living room (not enough light - trust me!)
- Laundry rooms and study rooms are available
- The 15th floor has a "sky lounge" with a very long table, good for hosting parties. You don't have to pay to reserve that room!
-Security: 24 hours, and they do rounds every few hours at night. To get into Fayette you must: swipe to get through the gates, swipe to get through the main door, swipe to get on the elevator, and then swipe to get to your apartment! phew!
- Fayette has two buildings Historic vs Towers: The main difference is convenience and extra comfort. Historic was not originally built for an apartment so some of the rooms are not equally sized, and it's not as pretty as the towers (hence cheaper rent).
Towers is where all the extra commodities are located (gym, coffee, fax machine). Towers has study rooms and washing machines every other floor (even floors are laundry rooms and odd floors are study lounges).
Historic has laundry room in the basement and no study lounges.
Towers begin at Full size beds for 4 bedrooms; Queen size beds for the 2 bedrooms.
Historic is ALL twin size beds. Historic also has a "7 bedroom" apartment option - which makes rent SUPER cheap

Pascault Row:
- SO CLOSE to school. Just one block from Pharmacy Hall and just across the street from Pharmacy Learning Center. It's great to hang out in PLC and study there with classmates since your apartment is so close
-Rent is Cheaper!!!
- There are no elevators. Most of the 2 bedroom apartments are on the 5th floor, which means you'd have to climb up all of them (trust me I live there, and it's not that bad because you get used to it!)
- There is 3 laundry machines on the basement floor that the entire building uses (that is not so good if you live on the 5th floor...)
- Everything is kind of old in P-row. The floor will creak and my stove doesn't work very well.
- You have to buy a lot of your own things: microwave, desk and chair for your room (while Fayette supplies all of these)
- You have to wash your own dishes because there's no dishwasher (also given in Fayette)
- The walls are thin so you could potentially hear your roommate and your neighbors (can be awkward!)
- security: the police station is across the street from P-row

For both Fayette and Prow, you must be a student of Maryland; so you will only see Dental, Nursing, Med, Social work, Pharm, etc. Safe from creepy people!

My suggestion for off campus housing is to come up to Baltimore and walk through some of them. I especially like Redwood, and Camden Crossing, as well as the townhouses/houses and the houses across MLK off Scott St.

Thanks A1.

Yea Fayette is out of my price range. And p-row might be too if the 2 bedrooms are all gone. Do you know if those prices for p-row include utilities? Personally, off campus housing info would be more useful. I can get some of it from websites but a student's input for specific housing sites can be much more informative.

Thanks for the information, A1!

Hey Purplecow, I was wondering if by no more 2 bedroom apts, the office meant no more in p-row or in all on-campus housing.

Hello! I meant P-Row because that's all that's in my price range. But I'm not sure about the other on-campus housing. :/

so vcu is out for you then? you're definitely going to umb??

yea! i sent my deposit and everything already. vcu is definitely out of the equation. they havent let me know anything yet, theres no telling when they might let me know, and umd is a much better place for me to be in my opinion. its still hard for me to believe ill be at UMD next year but im super excited!!

well congratulations! yeah umd is a really good school.. i just want to get out out maryland and go somewhere out of state... it will be a good experience for you! at least you don't have to worry anymore :)

i say dont give up on the 2 bedroom apartments, bc i know that they will call those with the contracts next week to confirm everything and there is a possibility something opens up. I just hope i dont have to deal with pests. :eyebrow:

I wish they would have had pictures of inside of the apartments on their website. They did mention today that they might make a tour video of p-row over summer... but obviously that's kinda late.
again if anybody finds/has some pictures please email me.
[email protected]

:)

Thanks a lot A1 and Purplecow! Fayette is indeed a lot compared to P-row, so I'm considering either the 4 or 7 bedroom options. Just worried those options will run out soon as well if I wait longer..

Yeah.. 700/800 dollars a month isn't what I would consider "super cheap" by any stretch, but looking around at the other apartments around UMB (Camden, Redwood, Marlboro, etc.), the prices seem to run pretty steady from 700-900 a month for 2 Bedroom / 2 Bath living situations.

Most of those are listed as well on that same webpage that a1park provided, under other UMB housing options.

An upper year on the facebook page noted that he lived at Ridley's Delight. Here's his post for those who haven't yet seen it on facebook:

"Zenith is a fairly new place that opened few years ago. One of my friends used to live there and I must say it was really nice place. It also has a nice view of Baltimore Orioles/Ravens Stadiums. They have some good amenities that you won't find at Camden. I still think its overpriced though. Camden court is kinda old place, may be 10 to 15 years. It's not as fancy as Zenith. Both of these places are gated with security guard present 24/7 and availability of parking as well. Although I'm not sure if the parking is covered under you rent, I think you have to pay extra for that (at least $120/month).

There are many students who live in Ridgley's and west of MLK. I have been living in Ridgley's (East of MLK) for past 3 years now. The rent is much cheaper compared to those apartments you mentioned. The houses are pretty spacious but many of them are old. Plus you will have to give up 24/7 security guard, in case that's one of things on your list. Parking is available on street for $20/year. I wouldn't bring my BMW M5 to park on the street though. If you looking for a reasonably priced place that is close to school/campus center/gym, Ridgley's and row houses across MLK may work.

Mount Vernon is a pretty area with lots of apartments. They are probably priced along the lines of Camden Court and Zenith depending on the facility. This area has lots of good restuarants and bars. I am sure there will be parking available as well, of course you will have to pay for it if you plan to have a vehicle."

So yeah, I've been really considering Ridgley's Delight; it just seems like it's in close proximity to the school, and the rent is not over the top. The Camden court apartments also look very nice, and are relatively affordable, but it's more of a walk. Details however, regarding pricing in areas like Ridgley's delight, and Mt. Vernon are not as accessible, so if anyone has access to that, I'm sure many of us would appreciate it if that could be shared.

This, by the way is the link to Off-campus UMB Housing.

http://cf.umaryland.edu/housing_ads/

If you click on Houses, there should be more information regarding availability in areas like Ridgley's, the amenities provided, and information on parking. Though, it's not too comprehensive, and pictures aren't available ... so don't let your imagination run too wildly. I suppose it's best to schedule a visitation with some of these residences when you arrive during Welcome Day, to at least get a feel for what the row houses are like in the Ridgley's delight area, but a day to find a roommate and place of residence seems a little awkward to me.

Hi,
Has anyone received their acceptance packet in the mail or their official acceptance letter?

nope, but i just got accepted and patrice said that she would send the official letter soon and the packet once they got my deposit. since i was the last interview i would expect mail to come soon!

on a side note, anyone looking for roomates for next year join the facebook group for class of 2015...but join anyways haha!
