Has anyone applied to the University of Melbourne DVM program or, even better, is anyone currently enrolled?

If so, what was your experience? Likes/dislikes? Any information! Thanks!

Hi RayRay1!

I applied to U Melb. a few months ago. I applied through an agent (I'm Canadian) but I didn't like dealing with them- however they waive the $100 processing fee of the application so in the end, I think it was worth it. Just make sure you do your own research, and talk to the school rather then relying on the agent for information about the program and the school.

Overall my application experience was pretty painless, all I sent in were my official transcripts, 2 letters of reference (one from a DVM one from a uni prof.), a CV and my letter of intent.

I found the school very easy to deal with, super friendly and willing to answer all your questions.

I've been waitlisted as it stands.

Though I applied to Melbourne, it is not my first choice- mainly because of the weather and climate.... Otherwise, from what I've read and understood, the school is very good- but the 4 year DVM program is brand new so there is obviously the possibility of kinks needing to be worked out.

Hope that helped! 🙂 msg me if you're wondering about anything else from a North American in Australia!~ 🙂

Hey,

I'm a 4th year at Melbourne. The DVM program was just started this year so I don't know a lot of specifics about it, but one of the reasons I applied to Melbourne (as an American) was because I thought they had a very informative website so I recommend checking it out closely. I believe it's a 6 or 7 year deal now that gives you a DVM. From year 1, you will be visiting the clinical campus on a regular basis, which is different from what I experienced. In the DVM program, I believe you will be bouncing around between 3 different campuses in the first few years - I think year 1 and 2 are on the main campus mostly, year 3 and 4 on the Parkville vet campus and 5 and 6 at the Werribee campus, perhaps? I know we don't see the year 1 students often, except when they have to venture down to Werribee. The main and Parkville vet campuses are very close. However, Werribee is a 40ish minute train or 30ish minute drive, if you are unfamiliar with the area. It is a new program and, believe me, they are using some of the last classes in the old program as guinea pigs to try and work out the kinks. However, the relatively new dean of clinical sciences and the dean of the vet school are very smart guys with a clear vision of what they are aiming for with the program. One of the primary goals of the new program is to provide a lecture free final year, which I think is a very valuable change to the program. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. 🙂

Hi Rayray1!

I've applied and accepted my offer to the DVM program commencing Feb 2012. Being from India, its really hard to get experience out here as there is no system for non-vet students to assist or work with a vet. After a lot of looking around, I only managed to get 200 hours of experience with a small animal vet. (You are referring to this kind of experience right? Or did you mean experience during the course? 😛). Anyhow, there is a mandatory animal handling course that is conducted (you can either join a batch just before classes begin or in the mid-year break) so they don't really require you to have prior experience. Of course, it will give you an edge above other candidates.

Message me if you have any questions 🙂 BTW.. did you apply and accept your offer? I just realized you started this thread a few months back.
