Hey,
I'm a 4th year at Melbourne. The DVM program was just started this year so I don't know a lot of specifics about it, but one of the reasons I applied to Melbourne (as an American) was because I thought they had a very informative website so I recommend checking it out closely. I believe it's a 6 or 7 year deal now that gives you a DVM. From year 1, you will be visiting the clinical campus on a regular basis, which is different from what I experienced. In the DVM program, I believe you will be bouncing around between 3 different campuses in the first few years - I think year 1 and 2 are on the main campus mostly, year 3 and 4 on the Parkville vet campus and 5 and 6 at the Werribee campus, perhaps? I know we don't see the year 1 students often, except when they have to venture down to Werribee. The main and Parkville vet campuses are very close. However, Werribee is a 40ish minute train or 30ish minute drive, if you are unfamiliar with the area. It is a new program and, believe me, they are using some of the last classes in the old program as guinea pigs to try and work out the kinks. However, the relatively new dean of clinical sciences and the dean of the vet school are very smart guys with a clear vision of what they are aiming for with the program. One of the primary goals of the new program is to provide a lecture free final year, which I think is a very valuable change to the program. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. 🙂
