Congrats Jessy. I'll be at the FAU campus this fall. Is UM@FAU a top choice of yours? I hope to see you there this fall. 🙂

I was leaning towards the main campus if I can get off the waitlist, but I definitely thought that FAU campus was pretty sick. I am going to call Dr. Markowitz and get the DL on the new curriculum, I have a couple of questions 🙂.

But, I hope we're classmates this fall Gin.

I think either campus will result in a good medical education. I know in previous years classes the FAU campus had the same tests that the miami campus did; written by miami professors but their lectures were the fau professors or through podcasts or whatever they're called. I know the first three weeks at the fau campus are the ethics classes and stuff. Then it's block scheduling from there. Anyway, if you talk to Dr. Markowitz let me know what he says about the curriculum. I'm curious as to how different it will be from the miami campus. No too different I imagine though. 😛 😛

Wow. THis thread grew so much in such a short span of time. Congrats to everyone who got in and I hope to see you there! 🙂 BTW done with finals today! 😀

Hey Gin, where did you hear that the two curriculums will be the same? I really don't understand this, because you are the second person to mention this. One was someone who didn't even interview at FAU, but I met him at my last interview, and he was convinced we will have the same exams and curriculum.

As far as I was told AT MY INTERVIEW, the FAU curriculum is about to change drastically. Dr. Lichstein is in charge of curriculum development and says that the new curriculum will be 10 hours of lecture with PBL for the rest of the time and half a day at your preceptors every week. If this is the case, I don't see how they can give the students the same exams anymore, and I think that this is the first year that the FAU campus is "going off on their own". Obviously I put that in quotations, because the degree is still from UM, but the curriculum will no longer be in synch...

Did you not get this presentation during you interview day?

Jessy

im pretty sure the two schools will have different exams now that they will have different teaching styles. Thats what i gathered from my interview there at least.

bingo. Which campus are you heading to facewait?

I meant that the previous years students had exams made by the miami professors. Our class will be the first class with exams made by the fau professors. I saw the presentation and they said it would be different. I don't really remember all the details that's why I'm curious as to the changes. 😛

yeah, well Dr. Markowitz isn't in today, but I'm going to try and talk to Dr. Lichstein or someone.

I'll let you know 🙂

Brian,

Isn't it nice to have nothing to do? 😱

Hey everyone, I'm glad I just stumbled across this page. I was wondering what everyone was planning to do about financing the high cost of Miami. I was lucky enough to score a $15k/year scholarship, but it still seems uber-expensive. It seems like I really have no choice but to bite the bullet and pony up for the 200K in loans if I want to go to Miami, but that is really scaring me.

Does anyone know if tuition is locked in at Miami?

Congrats on the scholarship p. I don't really know what you mean by locked in...

Congrats on the scholarship p. I don't really know what you mean by locked in...

Some schools lock in tuition the day you start, meaning that you know what tuition will be for all 4 years. That way you don't have to worry about "inflation" every year.

Hmmm that's a good thing to know...

Nvmind...I don't even go to this school so I shouldn't comment. Sorry it's been a long day

Are you OOS? Otherwise a 15k a year scholarship...I would grab it and run.

It depends what your other options are. Miami is a great city and the school has a lot of benefits (see my post on page 1). But if its 100k versus 200k then you might want to save your money...either way you will still be a doctor.

Dude, WTF are you talking about? You never posted on page 1 😕

But yeah I grudgingly agree with what this guy/girl says.

Unfortunately I am OOS. I am totally sold on the city and the school. The only thing that scares me is the mucho dinero. Every doc I shadowed kept bitching about how compensation keeps going down, and schools seem to be increasing tuition like mad every year. I'm not really sure that $200K will even cover it.

Anyone know what kind of reputation Miami has with residency directors?

IMHO I wouldn't choose a school based on its "reputation". If you are a great candidate you will get in to a good residency regardless of school.

But anyways from what I have heard (as a MS1) Miami has a good rep among residencies...the match list last year was quite impressive and our class is pretty ridiculous in terms of work ethic/intelligence combo. This is definitely a school on the rise....they are referring to us as the new Duke.

OOS...hmm...so with the scholarship you would paying about $140Kish for school fees and books, etc. Plus whatever living expenses you acrue. That really isn't that bad; most of us are in the same boat regardless of school. You will probably more than make it up, no worries.

If you are worried about money then be cost-conscious. Don't rent an expensive ocean-view apartment on Brickell and buy a Lexus (like some people)....rent a smaller apartment further away and use the public transportation.

Hey jessy_erin. I am going to attend the main campus. I have a MS in Immuno so I think I am going to do some research there too, possibly under a new Dr that came from Duke.
One of the reasons they are prob calling UM the new Duke is bc the dean, two of the countries top geneticists, and top cancer vaccine immunologist have moved from Duke to UM.

Oy...I'm jealous...I want to do Immuno research at the main campus. Blah...I had something lined up assuming I got in. Yay alternate list. BOO!

Congrats tho facewait, that's awesome. Yeah I agree that's why they call it the new Duke. Dean, and he's recruiting some Duke friends 🙂.

This morning I had the luxury of talking to Dr. Lichstein, and he answered a lot of questions I had.

Curriculum:

10 hours/week of lecture
10 hours/week PBL (problem based learning)
10 hours/week independent study time - you probably don't have to be on campus for this but it may be "blocked" into the schedule. We didn't discuss much, because it's independent.

During the presentation he mentioned 1/2 day/week with preceptor although we didn't touch on this in our conversation this morning.

The curriculum will be very structured even though there is PBL. Attendance will be mandatory, although Dr. Lichstein assumes student will want to attend anyways. He and the other members of the curriculum development committee have taken bits and pieces from various schools that have a PBL based curriculum and encorporated them to make their own curriculum. He said that if I want to find a curriculum that is most similar, I should look at the Colorado Medical School's website.

In case some of you are unaware, they have been journal articles published that there is a correlation between PBL and higher board scores. This is why many schools are tending towards this style of learning. It teaches you to function as a team member and think like a physician from the get-go.

Rotations

I decided to question the issue of residency with Dr. Lichstein, because I know there is an emphasis on ambulatory care at the FAU campus. I told him, let's say I hypothetically wanted to do Emergency Medicine, how would you advise me to do so. Well, he said very simply, he would have me paired up with some doctors across the street at the Boca Hospital and I could do that during 1st and 2nd years. The docs there are apparently very excited about students and love to teach. He then said he would have me do a rotation (~4 weeks) down at Jackson in Miami to get a feel for an urban ER, where there would be emphasis on trauma as well. He recommended I do this at the beginning of 3rd year, so that I could form relationships with attendings and make sure that it was the specialty I was really interested in.

Point: rotations will definitely be possible at Jackson, especially if Dr. Lichstein & co. feel that you may need experience in an urban hospital setting to be competitive amongst different residency programs for that specialty. They will work with you to ensure that you have the best of both worlds.

Best of Both Worlds:

More and more, residency directors and programs are putting emphasis on the idea that medical students should have experience with ambulatory care. We should have experience in that family medicine setting where we can follow a patient from start to finish AND have adequate experience with the tertiary setting. So, if you are planning on doing something that is related to tertiary care, residency directors still want to see that you have the capacity to function as a caring human being and doctor and that you know how to form proper relationships with your patients. This is very emphasized at the Boca campus, because of the emphasis on ambulatory care. If you want to practice tertiary medicine, you have plenty of opportunity to spend several weeks in electives at Jackson and surrounding hospitals.

I do believe very much that this attitude is prevalent in residency programs more and more, because at the last school I visited they said the same thing. At SUNY Upstate, where there is the option of choosing between the Binghamton (more suburban) campus and the Syracuse campus (more urban) for the clinical years, this was emphasized. My interviewer, who is a well-recognized physician and author talked about the benefits of doing 3rd year in a more ambulatory setting (Binghamton) and then doing many electives in the tertiary setting of Syracuse. He stated, just as Dr. Lichstein did when discuss FAU vs Main campus: "You get the best of both worlds".

Anyways, I hope that this is helpful for those of you that are deciding between campuses, or for those of you that have chosen the FAU campus and were looking for more info.

I personally think it may be hard decision for many.

Hey guys!

Just in case you were wondering, there are already like 17 or 18 of us already accepted at UMiami Med. If you have facebook, you could look us up under the group Medical Scholars Program.

OK, I am really bad at using facebook, but I can't find it. When I type "medical scholars program" into the searchbar it says it can't find anything.

Also, we should start a facebook group for peeps here. Anyone want to hook that up?

I joined. Side note, maybe you should make the group restricted so that not just any person can join. It's also prob better that you are the creator because I don't know if I could handle being the facebook leader of the ENTIRE institution lol. I'll just stick to being the creator of the MSP group. BTW I let them all know about the group so I anticipate that the group will grow a lot very shortly.

Hey Jessy,

Thanks for the scoop on FAU vs. UM Main campus it was very informative... Hope to see you at FAU next fall if that is what you decide.

I put it on open cuz I didn't want to have to approve everyone who wants to join. How would I know if they're really in our class or not? Anyway, I know being the creator of our class group is a big responsibility but I'll try not to let you guys down.

hey all - just a heads up for any of you applying/interviewing at UM. there have been a lot of changes in the curriculum that they may not tell you about. i am a first year medical student and have one week left until winter break. they crammed all of anatomy, histology, embryology, and pathology into 8 weeks. it's a horrible idea because you spend the entire 8 weeks studying non-stop and the entire class feels like they just spew out the information for the test and don't remember it. there is no long term retention of even the big concepts for the first section of anatomy. over 30 of the 150 students are failing the unit and the worst part is that the administration doesn't care. they are in love with the curriculum and told us that they would listen to us complain but won't do anything about it. dean o'connell and dean potter think anatomy is unimportant and especially don't care. there may be some changes in store for the next class... they may reduce the unit to 6 weeks. so if you want to go to a school that's going to actually teach you anatomy and listen to your concerns don't waste your money on a plane ticket to interview here and plan on going to any other school that you get accepted to. also, make sure if you have any questions about the curriculum while you're interviewing don't ask any second years, their curriculum is completely different from ours and they don't know much about it. they had a good curriculum with organization and great teachers. it's gone way downhill... keep your curriculum questions to the first years for honest reliable answers.

I think the FAU campus will do it differently than MIAMI for our year so I don't know specifically about their blocks...

Hey Jessy,

No problem 🙂 I'll keep you updated and let you know where I end up.😳

Jessy, how come the main campus is your preferred campus if you don't mind me asking?

Hey everyone,

i got my acceptance email last thursday, now just waiting for my letter in the mail. UM is my top choice so i will definitely being seeing everyone at the FAU campus next august!

See that wasn't so hard. Welcome to the coolest thread on SDN...😀 😀

Thought I answered this one...maybe on the florida thread...hehe...

Oh well, here we go:

1) grew up in big city, am an urbanite and want to practice urban medicine
2) want to have access to the diverse patient population in the jackson system, since I came from a hospital system where everyone speaks at least 2 languages...
3) want to do some research during 1st and 2nd years, I think opportunities will be better at main campus
4) 32 person class size = scary, but maybe I can get used to that
5) gut feeling 🙂

PS - I could be happy at FAU. I'm just trying to go with what I think will ultimately be best and easiest for me 🙂

Yeah, you already did cuz I posted it here and in the UM vs URochester thread...didn't know if the UM/UR thread would get kicked back fast or not. Good luck :luck: either way. I'm sure both campus have their advantages/disadvantages.

PS I'm not a good speller at all so just a warning to everyone...Please don't take offense. 😛

Thanks Gin. You're right, they both have their advantages and disadvantages. aaaah!

What are you doing for winter break?

Hey guys, along with "DWade" (lol) I'm also a first year here at Miami. I just wanted to extend a big welcome to all of our entering freshmen, and I'm glad to see some die-hard Canes over here!

I should be studying for my pathology exam, but alas, procrastination is too tempting. In response to "Miami2010"'s post, the curriculum is undergoing a change with respect to anatomy, next year will have it much easier by what I hear (lucky!), but the curriculum office is always tweaking/modifying the whole layout and responsive to student's concerns/suggestions. Even in its current incarnation, the "big bad anatomy" is definitely doable, it just requires some hard work (far from the bleak scenario that miami2010 puts it).

In anycase, If you guys have any questions, feel free to IM me at Medicane84 (creative AIM screen name eh?). I would love to answer any questions you may have.

Good luck, and the hard part is over, relax! Have fun, and get ready for fall!
