Memorizing how many subunits there are and how many transmembrane regions there are reminds just a little too much of biochem. 👎

Stupid histology question -- I'm entirely out of touch in that class. On Tuesday, we show up and take the practical and then take the written? With the practical, does he just show stuff on the overhead and then we just identify it from our seats? Also, since the dental students don't have to take the practicals, why do they get the free CD?

Stupid physiology question -- is ATP needed to detach myosin from actin in smooth muscle, too? It looks like that's somewhere in the picture, but I'm a chart dyslexic person.

For the practical, he has powerpoints with pictures from Histology Time and then the other half will be cut/paste URLs from the Iowa Histology site. At least that's how he did it last year.

If you're going to cram for Histology, don't depend on getting on the Iowa site anytime the night before or the morning of the exam.

Disregard these comments if he has changed your sources. 😉

I've looked at this chart (E-93/94) for a little bit, and I'm afraid that I have no idea what the ATP to ADP thing is over on the right of that little MpA cycle. For one, the point on the arrow is facing the opposite direction as the one going from MpA to Mp + Actin. Mucho 😕

I'm going say yes and no to your question. If myosin is not stuck to actin when it is dephophorylated by the phosphatase, then the muscle relaxes even with no ATP around.

If myosin is stuck to actin when it is dephosphorylated, then it gets stuck there in what he's calling a latch state. Only THEN do you need to rephosphorylate it with ATP to pry it back off.

My understanding is that the actual ATP nucleotide itself does not bind the myosin, though, like it does in skeletal muscle. So yes in the preceding paragraph you would need ATP as a substrate for the phosphatase to release, but since not all of the myosin molecules will be stuck to the actin in the absence of ATP, it would make sort of a half-rigor state for smooth muscle upon death. Sound right?

not stupid. i dont think it was ever specifically stated. as best i can tell using the graph on E-93, MpA requires ATP to go to Mp + Actin. of course it never specifically states this in any of the text explanations. there is nothing in BRS about it. so if it were on a test i would say yes it is required but i would put a question mark next to it on my answer sheet. is that enough of a non-answer for you? anybody else got any insight?

Loved that moonlighting post. Wikipedia?

You're right about the stuff that I should have studied for the mini. Problem is, I didn't. 🙁 Hence the C.

Somebody told me that he stuck a grade distribution someplace on Blackboard. Any idea about where that is BTW? I'd like to know that I did better than a module-full or so.

Cool, thanks everyone for answering my questions! I guess I'll go look at the Iowa site now for histo.

{Bagel}

Yeah I guess I should go there and snatch the images before the server gets bogged down. Thanks Amx.

goto announcements in the phys part and click view all. you can the distributions for last year as well. btw for those who didnt notice, the first slide on the muscle histo lab is from the anal canal of a monkey.

<------ Praying for a flash Ice storm !!!

You guys are reminding me why I like 3rd year so much more than the first two. 🙂

:luck: tomorrow to the 2010's - and a :luck: :luck: :luck: for Dormer's stuff 😀

Thanks AG! What is killing me is that you get through 70-80 pages of the cardio stuff, you're drained, and you realize that you are only halfway through. 👎

What happened to the days when we'd just memorize BRS and be done with it?

I know. I'm missing anatomy here. Well, not the practical parts, but the written part.

Recognizing stuff in histology sucks.

Uh, oh.

If you can't recognize histology stuff, you'll never make it as...

a pathologist.

For some reason I was thinking that you were interested in emergency medicine.

im totally comfortable with that. that brings my list of specialties i have no business doing to:
peds
ob/gyn
neurology
neurosurgery
path
psychiatry
pulmonology
gen surgery

when i started med school the list included only peds and ob/gyn. i thought choosing a specialty would be hard but it looks like it will default to something through a 3 year series of attrition.

You don't have Allergy on there, but I'll do you a favor and add it...

lol That last rotation must've brainwashed you.

btw...I called you about 3 hrs ago with a Nernst question...dang hippie!

Sorry man my phone was dead, so I left it here when I went to stuff my face with bratwursts, which was ok, since I ran 4 miles to get 'em.

Ask away, I doubt Her Bagelness will laugh too loud at your inadequacies, and I won't know the answer anyway, so I can hide while others chime in...

Pg 24 in the Physio BRS #7 & #12.

Correct answers were -30 mV... I got -300
and
+60 mV... I got +6

So I'm doing these types wrong in both directions. It'll be a pain to try and explain it to me on here but I'll be in early in the mod if you happen to be there...if not I'll just miss those problems on the exam.

I HAVE to start studying more....this crap is driving miss daisy nutz too.

Those spammers need to put a lil more heart into their work...here's one I just got.

Those are just decimal errors then. Or likely to do with the log portion. I'll prolly be up there early. I usually try to skip out on the whole death row vibe though.

yea it's probably the log10 thing...because I must be understanding it wrong because it always = 1 haha so it would be a useful part to even have.

log10 = 1....pointless unless I'm doing it wrong...which i am 🙂

Night folks...time to have a few nightmares about pencils that wont work, losing my pants, waking up late, and paris hilton's unyielding bout with crabs.

Oh no. :scared: I've always dreamed of being a pathologist. 🙂

So Johnny -- did you get your question answered. I obsessed about the log thing for like five hours before the mini. You're right -- log 10 = 1, so for sodium, it's 60 (log 10), so the answer's 60. Don't forget that you need to reverse the sign on your answer if you have an anion. I totally missed that whole part of the equation.

I'm just hoping that I'll remember to divide all diameters by 2. 🙂

Random 2011'er question amidst test block stuff...

I'm going to be getting a new laptop this summer, and I just wanted to know from you guys whether certain online resources (i.e. Hippocrates) are Internet Explorer-based or if they will work from a browser like Firefox. I'm basically trying to decide whether to get a PC or a MacBook Pro. I don't want to spend a lot of money on a Mac if there are things I won't be able to access. Yes, I do know about the Boot Camp thing that lets you run Windows on a Mac, but I'm going for a simple solution here.

Thanks!

I'm getting one as well, but to clarify, OU allots us money to purchase one, correct? Or do I just take out more from loans?😕

I think there is a computer budget included in our financial aid.

Hey OUdoc08, what are the hours like in 3rd year? How often do you take call, etc.

 So are you thinking about anesthesiology (I'm going by your title)?

For some reason I was thinking that you were interested in emergency medicine.

A lot of people seem to be interested in anesthesiology lately. If I remember correctly, last year as many people matched into anesthesia as matched into family practice. 😱

Financial aid budgets $2500 in the first year for a computer. Got it from the budget breakdown given out during my interview. 😎

You get an extra 2500 USD to spend on a computer, if you want to. Essentially, OU budgets it for you, so your loan amount is increased. I haven't run into much that having OS X/Safari kept me from using. But there are a few things. I do have Office for Mac (PPT-XLS files...) and downloaded Flip4Mac, which turns WMP files into Quicktime. I have a desktop PC too, so any compatability problems are kinda moot for me at least. You have 2 PCs per mod, and access to labs in the union and library too.

Talpa I looked at the match for the 06 class last semester; I don't remember them being equal, but I wouldn't have looked at the FP matches anyway, so I may be wrong. But it seems like it'd have to be pretty high, just guessing though, since I don't have it in front of me. I like the idea of anes right now, but I can definitely see the propensity for abject boredom as well...

Soonerfan,

It was nice to meet ya. Good luck with evertyhing.

Get a PC. I'm biased. (shrug) I have to say that because most of the other SDNer's are Mac users.

They increase your budget to allow for $2,500 in financial aid to go toward a computer. This is usually in the form of increased loan eligibility.

We had 17 matches last year for gas, same as FP...

I can speculate on the reason, but there's tons on SDN about that.

Huh. Learn something new every day.

The whole time I was in Dormer's section I was thinking, "It's been awhile since I've had a good cry..." and "How many ****ing questions does this guy HAVE!?!?"

The good news is, since I did so well in Biochem, I don't have the lingering pressure to make an A in Phys to keep my 4.0!! Woo!! Here's to hoping I can get a residency with a stellar interview and a 2.0!!

there are quite a few mac users in the class of 2010. most have macbooks. the pro is nice but expensive. there are a few things that dont work as well with macs: a small subset of the biochem question bank, histology times cd, integrated ppt/audio lectures. in the grand scheme these are all minor uses and can be worked around. i just installed parallels and windows xp so i could use histology times. i havent actually used it but i can if i want. for me the main thing i cant do natively in a mac is play poker online (most sites use downloadable .exe programs) but since i installed parallels, i can play poker as well. the macbook is actually reasonably priced comapared to its pc peers, the pro is expensive but it is hard to find a pc that matches its performance/style so get what you want and you wont really be held back either way.

Yeah, I reached that point, too. 🙂 I had form A, so I had the pleasure of starting with him, which then threw me off for the easier stuff.

4 days of studying for a 73%! Urgh.....👎
The good news is that most people in my mod did not do as well as they usually do so maybe we will get a few points back.
I can't believe I missed the PBL question...stupid murmur.

ditto. I haven't actually installed windows yet but am getting around to it. To me, the powerpoint/audio thing is no loss because we still have access to the separate power point and audio files.

My one current disgruntlement is that my macbook has been crashing pretty regularly. My husband thinks it's a heat sink (?) problem. It's under warranty, but I just haven't gotten around to calling them about it. I think that's more related to it being such a new model, so that bug has probably already been worked out for future models.

In the end, I don't think it matters. I'd try to buy something on the cheaper end that's light and has a long lasting battery. Big caveat, though -- I'm not a gamer.

Yeah, I forgot about the Broadcasts not working, although I think enough people went to Blair about it because all of Dormer's got posted as just PPT as well.

I thought the Macbooks had pretty quiet keys, until I heard The Inopportune Chuckler banging away on her new one. Either people have been leaving them at home or a lot of people got one for Christmas. There are quite a few around, prolly several Pros or older iBooks too that kinda blend in more...

I wish McHale and Dormer would switch what they teach...

i missed the damn pbl question too. i really need to learn to read the whole question, i saw holosystolic murmur and moved on. i dont even know what choices C-E were. 👎

+pad+ like whoa, but:

I was having the same deal, "random shutdown". I took it to Penn Square, they kept it overnight and put in a new heat sink. I no longer get the RSD, but if I do any kind of intensive "computing", it sounds like my computer is fiddin' to blast off. I've been meaning to go back in, and see if there is something else they can do to alleviate the intermittent noise, but haven't yet.

C was Left atrial hypertrophy, my second choice. I see that question getting tossed. You wouldn't know to look for hypertrophy unless you heard a murmur...but I think I'm confusing with regurg...

It was not murmur but I put it was because I remember she had one. I'm not sure what the right answer was.

I think it was left atrial hypertrophy. It wasn't until taking the test that I actually clued in that there was a difference between a holosystolic murmer and a holodiastolic murmur.

When I got to the pbl question, I realized that maybe I should listen to other people's pbl presentations instead of spacing out. 😳

Don't feel bad Rachel...I studied over a week and got a 71.1%.

I thought I did worse...my noggin was fried today and I was sleepy which doesn't help. But I'm happy with a C 👍

Hey Bagel Babe...did you have any luck with that boot camp?

I'm planning on trying it too since whoever it is can't make presentations that work on anything other than IE.😡

I haven't done it yet because we don't have a copy of windows. My husband can download a free one through OSU, but they require that you have windows to do the download. So he's going to burn a copy today or tomorrow. I guess we'll try it after test block. It sounds like glp's parallels thing is working.
