Dr. Wilcox said that the committee was meeting on Wednesday. And that invites would go out at the end of that week. The week before spring break and the week after. I specifically asked him about the admissions process. Hope that helps!
 
How good would you say UT is for clinical pharmacy?

Hi Guys!

Housing seems like a confusing issue but trust me; its actually pretty fun! I used to live in Austin and the best advice I can give you is to get an apartment finder. They talk to you about all your conditions (price, noise level, etc.) and drive you around to see various places that meet your criteria. The service is provided at no cost to you. The only 2 down-sides is that they will not show you properties that do not agree to pay them a fee. You also lose out on any lease bonus agreements. That said, they were able to show me many great places that I were completely unaware of with my own research.

If you can, take a quick trip down to Austin with housing as your primary goal. Call an apartment finder before hand so she can set up a tour. If you can help it, don't rent anything "sight unseen." Be sure to take people's opinions with a grain of salt. I've had friends in West campus that found their own quiet nooks; there's no need to turn down an entire neighborhood with reasonable prices because of a few (okay a LOT) of noisy frat houses. Riverside is in a pretty crummy neighborhood but the bus to UT is extremely convenient and the gated community 'helps' with security. With the money you save you could easily rent out a garage for the safety of your car. When you go visit apartments ask the person who is living there if they like it. They never have anything to gain from lying to you so you will most likely get an honest opinion.

Good luck home shopping! I personally am the type of guy to think that if I do anything related to start looking for housing then I've "jinxed" myself. 🙂 Good luck waiting for the next week decisions! I think my toes are in "perma-curled" mode.

I asked a lot about UT's new curriculum during my interview because the student is in the first class that's had to work with it, and it sounds like the new curriculum has been designed to be more involved with the clinical aspect of pharmacy than it was before. If clinical is what you wanna do, I'm sure you'll be just fine at UT. 🙂

If by 'helps' you mean 'not at all' then yes, the gates 'help' with security. The problem is these complexes are so large and full of students that you have people constantly entering and leaving at any time of the day, making it easy for people to tailgate in if you don't already know the gate codes.

I lived on Riverside for three years, and though we never got robbed, I know plenty of people in the same complex that weren't so fortunate. I think it helped that we were on the third floor. My roommate's car did get stolen from her own car port though. Cars also get broken into all the time (but that's a problem throughout Austin).

The management doesn't make living there any better. Our a/c went out in the middle of one summer, and it took them two weeks to fix it. Another time they tried to evict me for not paying rent when they lost my check.

Plus, I think it's a bit too noisy for someone trying to take pharmacy school seriously. Maybe I'm an old lady now, but I'm definitely gonna look for a more mature area to live if I get in.

The location on the shuttle is nice and all, but there are plenty of other neighborhoods in Austin near a shuttle you where I hope you wouldn't have to put up with that crap. You'll probably have to pay more to live there, but it'll be worth it.

I hear they just redid that HEB. I bet it's still not as cool as the Hancock one though. 😛

Thank goodness!! I got admitted to A&M and $500 are due by March 18th. But I really, really want to get into UT. Hopefully, the admission offers (or rejections 🙁 ) get sent out soon.

Rejections go out by snail mail, and they won't go out for a month or so.
 
I'm tired of waiting. I want to find out now so I know if I should go drink to celebrate or go drink to make myself feel better.

that HEB was terrifying when I lived in Riverside. Did you ever visit that super mercado right outside of town lake?

Does anybody know if the pharmacy admissions office is open during spring break??

I ask because if I don't get a response by next Friday, I'm thinking of calling them during spring break and trying to get an answer from them so I can know if I need to send 500 big ones to A&M or not.
 
I'm pretty sure they don't want to be at work during spring break haha I go to UT and I don't think anything is open during spring break.

I don't know if they would tell you over the phone if you got accepted. My guess is no but my word probably does mean much. Hopefully a student already in the college of pharmacy can tell you.

Haha no, I've never heard of it. Is it a restaurant or something?

One good thing about Riverside: the taco stands. I used to frequent the one in the parking lot by that La Disco Ramba club. Legit.

Also... 888 off Oltorf. I hope it's still open. They had an interesting fried rice with like a Tex-Mex twist. I don't really know how else to explain it, but I used to get it all the time. I'm not a huge fan of tufo, but their sesame tofu was also pretty awesome.

And just out of curiosity, which complex did you live in? I was at Crossing Place (which changed to University Village or something like that).

doesn't all letters (acceptance and rejection) go out through snail mail? I don't really remember anyone saying acceptance letters were email although that'd be AWESOME 😎
 
I'm pretty sure it goes out by email, and by "it" I mean acceptance/deposits. I heard from one of my friends that she found out before spring break started, so I'm hoping that will be an excellent way to start mine.

I AM going to call UT soon and hustle them about my admission because I have to let Tech know if I want to go there by the 15th... Anyone heard back from UH?

As for Riverside, I currently go to UT and Riverside is terrifying. I have never lived there and never want to. My friend saw a dead body by a dumpster there once when he used to live there. So...I'm definitely recommending Hyde Park/North Campus area, as that is where I live now. I am an old lady, graduating senior and not in the mood to deal with all the party noise that exists in West Campus and at Riverside.

Just my 2 cents. 888 is still there, for whoever was wondering.
 
Finding out before spring break would be awesome but my friends found out last year after spring break.

Riverside sucks. I have a lot of friends that live there. It's really close to pleasant valley which is probably one of the worst places in Austin.

Yup last years acceptances were emailed and the status changed on UT direct - if I read last years thread correctly
 
Riverside and West Campus are great if you want to party. There's always parties going on there and it gets really loud. As others have said, Riverside is definitely not the safest area. One of my friends had her tires slashed randomly. Some places in West Campus can be quiet but it just depends.

I much prefer North Campus as more serious and older students reside there. Plus there's easy access to the shuttle to campus, the bus to HEB, and you're close to Dolce Vita, Mother's Cafe, Hyde Park Bar & Grill, and other places.

Some people choose to live in Far West instead as the apartments there are quieter and cheaper. It's also on the shuttle route.

My preference is South Congress. Walking distance to a lot of cool shops and restaurants plus easy access to the hike and bike trail. The downside is that traffic can get pretty bad coming from and going to downtown.
 
I lived in town lake at riverside. As far as my experience was, the stories I heard were extremely exaggerated. For those of you on a tighter budget and no families to worry about, riverside is a reasonable place to live. Once in a while you can find a gem of a place around north campus, but the prices on average are markedly higher. It's all about risk/reward for your particular situation. I don't particularly need a quiet home because I study 100% on campus. When I go home I don't mind the noise because I am a heavy sleeper. I'd rather have fun neighbors WITHOUT annoying crying babies. I knew plenty of people who happily lived in riverside for years, single attractive females no less, with no problem. If you listen to word of mouth you'd probably imagine riverside to be a giant swamp surrounded by lava and entirely populated by rapists carrying Super Soakers full of acid.

To find an apartment home try googling "Austin City Crime Map" or something of that nature. The city of Austin has great databases including apartment home specific statistics. You'll find that on average riverside and anything near down town is on the high end for crime, including west and north campus. Do your homework and you'll definitely find a place suited to you.
 
Ok to be fair, if Riverside was as bad as people made it out to be I wouldn't have renewed my lease twice. Anywhere in central Austin has to deal with crime, even if you live on campus.

I'll also add that even though the surrounding neighborhoods are kinda ghetto, the student apartments are pretty new, and even nicer than half the stuff I was shown by an apartment locator when I was looking into living in west and north campus. They also sort of have "amenities" like free tanning beds (that don't always work), a free gym (where half the stuff doesn't work), and a pool (that always gets taken over by families from nearby lower income apartments). Because of the location though, rent is cheap, includes some utilities, and the apartments are furnished (ours even included a washer/dryer). So it's great if you are on a tight budget. Another thing, if you're new and don't know who to live with, they do what's call "individual leases" where they charge by the bedroom instead of the unit. So if you go potluck on a roommate and that roommate bails on their lease, your rent won't be affected.

That said, I'd personally never live there again.
 
For some people who are waiting on UT before submitting deposits to other schools, I know a few individuals who are in the UTCoP right now that submitted deposits for other schools, but withdrew after hearing of an acceptance at UT. If you don't hear by this weekend, it might be good to secure your spot in another program and just forfeit the deposit if you hear of an acceptance from UT in the second round (which should be the week after Spring Break) if UT is your first choice. I don't think they told anyone over Spring Break, and even if you called them, chances are you may not have been reviewed by the ad-com yet; so I don't know if calling in regards to a deadline for another school will help much. Of course, what you decide to do is up to you.

As for places to live, I would suggest North campus (29th street and higher). I live about 5 blocks away from campus (a 15 minute walk) and it is definitely much more tame than West Campus; I rarely have a problem with noise on the weekends. My family bought a condo where I've been living the past 3 years and it ends up being about the same as paying rent each month in terms of cost. It may be a good investment since you'll be here for at least two years, maybe three or four (depending on rotations).

For that you could live at The Triangle!

From what I've heard, north campus seems a little cheaper than west campus, but my friends have all had at least two bedroom places. One bedroom might be a little more, but $1300 will definitely get you something good.
 
If you are buying a condo and paying $13000 a month, then I say that is a good investment. UT isn't going anywhere anytime soon so there will always be someone who needs a place.
 
I just checked my application status page and this is what it states:

"We've received all the items that are required to review and process your application. The Admissions Committee is currently reviewing your application for admission. Once the Committee reaches a decision, you'll be notified by mail and your decision will be posted on this page."

It didn't have that message yesterday. The wheels are in motion! Ahhhh! I'm so nervous!
 
$1300 is a lot of money to burn on rent per month as a student in college. For that amount of money you could rent a very nice apartment in any part of Austin (Downtown, South Congress, Campus etc.)

I lived in Austin for nearly 7 years including undergrad and a few years after. I've lived all over town during that time including Riverside, Far West, South Austin, and East Austin.

Back when I lived on Riverside, things weren't that bad but I hear things have gotten a lot worse since then.

Far West is a pretty nice area to live if you don't mind being stuck in Mopac traffic during the peak hours. There are a lot of families and graduate students around this area so it's good for those wanting a quieter community. There are some very nice apartments around the Arboretum area for decent prices if you don't mind the commute.

When I lived in East Austin, it was still an up and coming area. There was a lot of new development in and around the older neighborhoods. Some people think it's still pretty "ghetto" but it has it's perks...lot's of good eating spots...El Chilito...mmmmmmm

If I get accepted and decide to go back to UT, I would try to find a place in North campus this time around. I'd get a bike and just bike to class everyday 😀.

YEAY! did everyone get that message? I did... If someone didn't then maybe they only did it for the ones who are being considered before spring break...

yea i got one too but i think it might be for everyone since my gpa, etc isnt too great lol
 
So this is what my evil brain been's cooking:

Do they reivew application based on last name and/or the Jan-Feb rounds? If so then January people sohuld hear first or whose names start with lets say A-J. Then after spring break, people with names K-Z or February will hear back?

They review applicants according to a z-score. The z-score is used to determine the order in which the applicants are reviewed. I don't know how the whole z-score thing works so I'm not much help. Maybe a student already in the college can answer this. Dr. Wilcox didn't say too much about this during my interview.

He did not talk about it at all during our interview. Is Dr WilCox a part of admissions committee?

Dont worry! I am sure you are not rejected. And I think you mentioned that you are a UT Student so you got more weight than us probably

Mine hasn't changed either so I'm started to get worried at this point. :scared:

Although based on this I could through your theory out the window. My last name is between A-J and I did the January round but application hasn't been reviewed yet so there. 🙂

We received your online application for the Pharm.D. Program. Additional materials may be needed to complete your Pharm.D. application. View details here.
 
If you read the thread from last year, people had all sorts of different statuses on UT Direct. Even after getting accepted some statuses didn't get updated to "accepted" for days. Hmmmmmm.....

Mine says the same thing. I guess if you are a UT student, your status states this.

Ah okay so all is well. Maybe that means those that are getting that message of admissions committee reviewing application for admission means admissions to the university? That explains why current UT students just says you are a current UT student and that they received our materials and may require additional materials!! Hope is not lost! :xf:
 
there are lots of brand new properties springing up in south congress. If you want a never-lived in condo I would check there. Prices start at around 100k.

$1300 is a lot of money; typically you could get a one bedroom apartment for about $700-800 depending where you look. I think I'm even going on the expensive side but, since I own and don't rent, I am not the main source. Best advise is to find a free apartment finder, give them your criteria (location, price, etc) and they can help fit you in a good place. Also, the buses are free for all UT students (both shuttles and city buses) so that is also a great option. Even though I live close to campus, I still take the bus; especially if its a "business casual" day.

Do we have proof from last year that they sent out admissions in two rounds?
It just seems a little bit odd that they will decide in two rounds. Whats to say that the people in round two aren't better qualified? I'm thinking that maybe in the meeting this wednesday they will just discuss interviews and then Dr. Wilcox will determine Z-scores over spring break and then on the wednesday after spring break they will meet again to determine who actually gets in. Yes? No? Maybe?

Can Texas Southern University push a PharmD applicant to go a an undergraduate BS in biomedical Scince to finish Pharm in 6 years instead of 4 years?
