University of Texas Application Thread

Do we have proof from last year that they sent out admissions in two rounds?
It just seems a little bit odd that they will decide in two rounds. Whats to say that the people in round two aren't better qualified? I'm thinking that maybe in the meeting this wednesday they will just discuss interviews and then Dr. Wilcox will determine Z-scores over spring break and then on the wednesday after spring break they will meet again to determine who actually gets in. Yes? No? Maybe?

Nevermind - I read last years thread and it seems like the higher ranking applicant's are discussed first. Good Luck everyone!!!

My guess is that they split the decision into two rounds because trying to choose 120 people in 1 day may be too much. They are also picking people to be on the wait-list because there will be some that choose other schools.

But this is just a guess...anyway...we will know soon!! Good Luck :luck:

Goodness I'm so nervous all of a sudden- they are deciding tomorrow D=
I guess Dr. Wilcox has already assigned a Z-score and they are going over the top 140 people or so tomorrow

yea i got one too but i think it might be for everyone since my gpa, etc isnt too great lol

Actually, mine doesn't say that (unless I'm on the wrong page).

It says
"Our records indicate that we do not have an active application on file for you. As a former UT student, you will need to submit an application for readmission. If one has been submitted, please check again later.

We received your online application for the Pharm.D. Program. Additional materials may be needed to complete your Pharm.D. application. View details here. "

Hmmm, maybe I need to apply for readmission?? I graduated last semester, but I turned in my application while I was still a student.

This is all stressing me out. I haven't been able to sleep properly all week.

Oh man, you should call someone and check on that. I also graduated last semester, but I'm still enrolled in classes this semester, so mine isn't saying that.

Yeah totally. I just realized this today around 6:30. So I'm worried this will delay any sort of response. And I can't afford delays!!! lol.

I'm gonna wake up at like 8 AM tomorrow just to call the pharmacy school.

anyone know what time the admission staff is meeting tmrw??? :scared:

So I've notice that the minimum GPA req by ut is lower than other schools (2.0) but does anyone ever heard of anyone getting into UT of any pharmacy schools with a 2 point something GPA? I will be applying for next year and feel so much like a loser LOL.

I will be taking my pcat sometime this year.
Can anyone give me any advise on whether should I apply for pharmacy school and tell me if I might even get a chance?

I've worked as a pharm tech for 4 yrs n have a BS in health science n a minor in nutrition. Volunteered at 2 hospitals n did an internship at an alzheimers health cafe center (internship was more like paying the school for doing free labor of 320 hrs in one semester). I was the general manager/owner for 3 restaurants (owner for 2, but sold it already), one is currently still open and operated by me and I will be doing the same thing until I apply for pharmacy school. I can get great recommendation letters from my boss (pharmacists at cvs). My gpa is lower comparing to all other applicants I believe-3.1ish and for courses mine is prob lower - 2.9ish . I am currently not in school and as for PCAT I will take it this year. I am turning 24 and I feel like if I get in next year when I am 25 I will probably be the oldest student in my class🙁

What I was wondering is should I even try? I've talked to Dr. Wilcox and he is very encouraging and helpful but I just would like to know the reality because if I wouldn't even get a tiny chance on admission then I prob wouldn't try. None of my family / friends r doing anything similar so I don't know who to ask for advise. Any help/advise anyone? Thanks🙂

just apply and do well on PCATs. I have a 2.9 GPA and a comp score of 79% on my PCATs and I still got an interview at UT AUstin and Minnesota. I really didn't think I'd get this far either but I suppose my letters of rec, essays, PCAT, and experience helped make up for it. You really never know unless you apply and since schools are looking for diversity it definitely wouldn't hurt.

I was rejected the first time I applied, though I did get an interview. My PCAT composite is 80%, overall GPA is 2.99999 (lol), I have a BS in Human Biology, my recommendation letters were all max score, I worked as a full time tech for 3 months and on weekends for 6 months as the only tech in the store during weekends. I volunteered for 2 summers, one summer was 3 days/wk, the other was 1 day/wk + work. When I got rejected, I went to see Dr. Wilcox and he said my interview wasn't impressive (which I figured, it was my first interview ever). He also said at this point, upper division classes would help me more than pre-pharm GPA. So I took a bunch of extra classes this past year including immunology, human infectious diseases, drugs in our society, and principles of drug action.

I got another interview this year, and my interviewer said he's surprised, based on my interview, that I didn't get in last year. I told him my grades will be a problem this year, and he said something like he can get the AdCom to take a closer look at my application because I had an impressive interview. I'd say just apply. You'll never know how many academically well qualified applicants don't have great LoRs, have 0 experience, and can't answer interview questions well.

Sorry if my grammar is terrible in any part of that. I'm running late for class and don't have time to check it over, hah.

Just make sure you do good on your PCAT to try and offset the GPA, but the BS, tech experience, good LORs, volunteering, and managerial experience (leadership!) will all make you a competitive applicant.

My GPA is just under 3.0, and I don't have quite as much experience as you, and I still got an interview at UT. I'm crossing my fingers on what UT decides from it, but I've also been accepted to two other schools. So you've definitely got a shot somewhere. 🙂

They're meeting today.... I wanted to find the room and see what it looks like they're doing from the outside, but I don't know the room numbers!

No matter what happens, apply to pharmacy school when you are ready. Don't let anything deter you.

If you are worried about numbers, you can go to the UT website and look at the statistics for last years entering class. It will give you a good idea about what they are looking for. What you will find is that they take a variety of people with scores above and below the mean for GPA and PCAT. They make it very clear at UT that they have denied applicants with a 4.0 and a PCAT of 99%.

Early Summer, start studying for the PCAT and take it early. If you don't get the score you want, get a tutor or PCAT class and take it again. October will be the last testing opportunity to apply for entry in 2012.

25 is not going to be the oldest person in the class. Actually, the stats at UT show the average age is around 24.

In my interview I discovered that they enjoy meeting people with interesting life stories and non-traditional backgrounds. You have insight about things that a traditional student may not have. It doesn't give you any significant advantage, but it really helps in the interview.

Most important: Apply early and stay positive!! Good Luck!

Yeah I didn't have time to find a computer to check this forum. It was my friend's idea anyways. I'd feel like a creeper if I did walk by the room and looked in for a bit. It would have been pretty funny though, right? If it had a window and they saw me flailing my arms.

Well here comes the worst 3 days of my year. THE WAIT

Can someone at UT give me some more info on the curriculum? UT had always been my top choice until I had my interview at Tech. I was totally impressed by the technology and clinical focus in Texas Tech curriculum. They just completed their simulation center with mannequin patient plugged into hospital monitors. It was the coolest thing I have ever seen.

After Texas Tech, I had three other interviews(UH, A&M, UT); but I keep thinking about what I saw in Amarillo. Obviously, I don't know if I am accepted yet. But I would like to get more info in case I am fortunate enough to get into both schools. I feel so torn.

So, for the current UT students, how does UT prepare you for clinical pharmacy? Like what kind of hands-on training do you get? Do they do things like hiring actor patients for mock scenarios? The professor at Tech told us they use the simulation and mock scenarios to give the students a chance to practice and make mistakes on NON-living patients.

How about immunization? When and how do you get the training? Do you get to practice on fake arms first? I am sure UT prepares you well for book knowledge, I just want to know if you get enough hands-on experience, too.

By the way, how would you rate the professors at your school? Is UT a great school because they have awesome teachers, or is it because the students they choose are awesome already, so they learn and master most of the materials on their own? Or both?

Thanks a bunch! 😉

I know- I'm so scared especially when you said that you didn't do well on the interview because it was your first ever- this one was my first ever unless Target counts =P

LOL I would of gotten a friend to go and knock and ask for directions because she was lost or something =D

Actor patients will always remind me of Kramer.

This is so intense. All I can think about is being accepted/denied; I can hardly manage the anticipation!!

I am in the exact same boat. UT was always my first choice, but when I interviewed at tech, I fell in love with it too. If I get accepted to UT, I'll be really stumped about which one to choose. From what I've heard though, Tech seems to provide more clinically-based classes and also has more variety available when it comes to P4 rotations. Can some UT people try to persuade us to come here, please? 🙂

Even though I want to talk you out of UT so I could take your spot😛, ill give some bright spots for UT.

1.) the resources at this school seem to be a lot, plus I heard there's a lot of NIH funding in all areas of pharmacy at UT, so if you want a mentor for a research project, its there

2.) this is what i really like, since ive been to europe before, is the pharmobility program. apparently UT does not have all the sites available for the students (only Lisbon, Barcelona, and Bath). you get to spend 6 weeks as one of your rotations or electives in one of those places and learn how community pharmacy differs from the US. Pretty interesting imo.

here is the website: http://www.pharmobility.org/

3.) i dont know the stats for Texas Tech graduating class (too lazy to find), but coming from Dr. Wilcox he said that of a graduating class of 120, about 30 go into residencies, thats a huge number so im guessing the students who want to go to residency might likely get into one

this is all i know so far, if i made any mistakes, please feel free to correct me

Yup, it's like being on a roller coaster that doesn't end!!!

No, it's more like hoping myself to death for luck x2 then freaking out, then getting paranoid, then feeling sick as hell and throwing up, leading to my spontaneous combustion shortly followed by beating a guy in a banana suit.

Sage advice here. I would follow it to a 'T.' As for age, 25 is the average age at most schools from what I've seen. I'll be 28 when I start next year so you're still young.

Hang in there everyone!!

Good luck with UH! I am still waiting on them for an interview 🙁

Thanks!! Good luck at UIW. Hang in there for UH, I just saw that someone just got an invite this afternoon and they have one of the more extended interview seasons.

That is a good question. I tried to find last years forum to see when people found out, but I didn't know where find the link.

Would someone be willing to research that? Or at least begin speculation based on wild rumors and innuendo!? 😀

chill out folks - I didn't receive my acceptance email until 5:13 pm last year (I just looked it up). They're not all sent out at the same time. Calm down, calm down!

I just got my acceptance email!!!!
Everybody check their email....

Looks like they went at the end of the Friday workday 🙂

The AdCom is going to read our lamentations and send all the emails at 5:26 ^_^ Best of luck everyone! :xf:

lol- I just realized that my family is going out of town for spring break on Friday at 5 and our condo has no internet D= Hopefully we'll get signal on the phones. Otherwise it'll be the worst spring break ever.

Give me your email address and pw and phone number. I'll forward the message to you.

Comrades, one more day. Hopefully we all get in. If not, remember that they're meeting again 2 Fridays from now. But if I don't get in tomorrow, I'll probably be in Kingsville next year (I should feel relieved and humble that I got into A&M, but all I feel is stress&anxiety lol).

Also, y'all can afford expensive scotch. I can't so I go Irish. 😀

Ahhh! i have my UH interview on Friday too! I'm in no emotional state to be evaluated. I wonder how I'll perform on their personality test. 😛

Don't sweat the personality test for UH. It's not difficult and there's no right or wrong answer. The test is a list of questions that you choose what best describes you and what is least like you.

Thanks =D I have a feeling I won't get in...but if it looks like I'll be without internet before they send the acceptances out I'll send the info to you.

Hey, even if we don't make it, it's gonna be spring break soon =D

Sorry for such a late response - almost every UT pharmacy student has been hiding in a study cave for the last month. I love reading these threads...when pharmacy school gets really rough, its nice to see this thread and realize how many people would love to be in my shoes.

Anyway, UTCOP definitely prepares you for clinical pharmacy. Infact, they're placing more emphasis on it than I think is necessary, considering how few of the student body will go into that field. During your P2 Fall semester, you'll take a course called "Patient Assessment." In this class, you'll basically learn how to do a physical exam on a patient (blood pressure, reflexes, cranial nerve tests, eye exams, ear exams, respiratory exams, listening to the heart, etc etc). In lab you practice on your partner, but during the lab practical exams, they have an actual patient you need to perform the exams on. You also take a course called "Clinical Skills" during P2 Spring semester. In this course, you learn how to navigate patient charts, and you get immunization and CPR-certified. Finally, you have 3 semesters of Pharmacotherapeutics lab. You are given a paper case of a patient, including their chief complaint, labs, history of present illness, meds, etc. You and your group have to diagnose the patient and write a SOAP note on what actions should be taken (therapeutic lifestyle changes, patient education, meds, etc). In later semesters of the course, you will need to present the patient and your diagnosis to a group of professors, who will ask you difficult questions on the spot to test your true knowledge of the disease state and medications.

There are probably more courses, but I have not taken them yet. Overall, I think I'm getting an extremely well-rounded pharmacy education, and I know I'll be prepared for whatever aspect of the profession I choose.

Sorry, forgot about this part of your question...

Overall, all the professors are very approachable and want to see the students succeed. I think UTCOP has a pretty fantastic faculty - several of our Pharmacotherapeutics professors wrote chapters in the textbook that is considered the gold standard nationally.
