Did you get an email today that rejected you? I'm just wondering what to look for. 🙁
I personally e-mailed Dr. Wilcox to kind of generally ask when to expect interview invites this week. He e-mailed me back saying that he is sorry, but the pharmacy admision committee decided not to extend an interview to me this cycle. I should be getting the official rejection letter within a few days.

While I'm happy I got in, I'm disappointed and sad that some people on here who really deserved a shot didn't get one.
RNtoPharmacy, I don't understand why they didn't even give you an interview--I saw your stats on another thread, and if I were on the adcom, I would have wanted to at least meet you.
Knickerbocker, it sucks. Everyone here knows you should have gotten in.
I don't know what the deal with the interview is. I thought I had a ****ty interview, but I still got in, so I don't think the interview can be THAT much more important than everything else. And if it is, my guy was just really lenient, because I thought I sounded like a ***** in my interview.
But I hope you still go to pharmacy school, whether it be at UT or elsewhere, because I think the profession could use a few more people like you. 🙂

well, to be honest, i'm still quite in shock and amazement that I actually manage to get accepted into UT Austin...Mainly the reason was I believe I didn't do too well in the interview, at least in comparison to the other 03 interviews I had had earlier...Out of the 04 interviews I had at UH, Tech, A&M and UT, the last one made me feel least confident...

FYI, I never work as a pharm tech, not even certified but I do volunteer biweeky at the local hospital pharmacy....last summer, I did manage to get my shadowing observation hours in the retailing pharmacy of WalMart close to my house...I think you don't need to get lots of experiences like 200+ hours of working as pharm tech or so....at least, you're able to show them that you're genuinely interested in pharmacy as a career option, and you did expose to the real-life working setting of pharmacists...In fact, one of the questions was what I learned the most from such experiences to the pharmacy world...and that was the only one answer I think I did great...🙂

Second, grades and things like that, in my opinion, affect no more at the point of the interview. Didn't you guys remember the interviewers said that they had no references to your GPA, transcript, or anything like that...all they have on the table at the interview hour was just your essays...so, that means essays and your language skills are crucial...

I don't know....I came to the UT interview which was my last one... I just thought that finally all these interviews were over...and in my mind, I was telling myself that UT is only for perfect candidates, and since I'm not, I'm only here to have fun! 🙂....So, even though there were some questions I honestly didn't know how to respond, I still smiled and said whatever I thought right at the moment, and hope it would please the interviewers....I guess somehow, in order to accept you, they have to like your personality as well....that is be confident, be humble, never be cocky!

uhm...by the way, I remember Dr. Wilcox said there would be no deposit...but I just checked the application status page, and now it showed I owe $200 for money deposit...well....so I guess what he said was not true then...

Thanks. I guess I will e-mail him tomorrow... and I bet I get the same reply. I'm sorry. I also saw your stats on another post, and I can't believe you didn't get an interview! 😕

---

Knick, I have been reading this site for a short while (mostly trying to catch up on all the Texas threads), and from what I have read, I can't believe you didn't get accepted. I am so confused about the admissions process now. Good luck to you.

uhm...by the way, I remember Dr. Wilcox said there would be no deposit...but I just checked the application status page, and now it showed I owe $200 for money deposit...well....so I guess what he said was not true then...

yeah, but that $200 will go towards your tuition in the fall, so you don't really lose it to something useless. at least that's what i thought i read.

I've been reading your posts and it would seem like maybe you didn't do so well on the interview. Generally UT likes to say they 'dont have a formula' and they 'look at the whole package' but private sources have always told me to consider the interview to be worth 30-40% of your total 'score'. It might even be more since the weight of subjective impressions of the committee members (Dr. Wilcox and Kloesel especially) are so ridiculously important.

It doesn't seem legal for a public institution to have an inconsistent, undefined formula like that.

uhm...by the way, I remember Dr. Wilcox said there would be no deposit...but I just checked the application status page, and now it showed I owe $200 for money deposit...well....so I guess what he said was not true then...

He forgot that there were a few non-UT students in the audience. UT students don't have to pay the deposit. Or do an extra application for an extra $60.

I really can't believe it either. Your stats were good, can't believe you didn't even get a chance to interview. I'm so sorry you found out on you birthday 🙁

Like evildarklord198 and nehe87, I also didn't think I did that great in my interview... I posted all the things I did wrong the minute I got back. (just go back, what, 50 posts?) But, I don't know, I guess they liked me. I talked to a lot of the P1s and P2s before and after the interview too... you know, maybe they actually tell the adcoms if they really did or did not like someone and that gets taken into consideration, maybe it's not a huge factor but it might have something to do with the admissions process. Like I said, I talked A LOT in the interview... I thought this was a bad thing, but perhaps it wasn't. I actually had another interviewee say to me when I got back from my interview, 'Oh wow, you were in there a LONG time.' I asked a lot of questions too, mostly during the interview, not so much during the tour, but I asked a few. I didn't want them to think I was just asking questions for the sake of asking questions, but I had a bunch of questions ready for when I got there and boy was I ready to ask them! Bottom line, I don't know why they chose me over so many other qualified applicants, but they obviously saw something in me that they liked. I'm sure there is a method to their madness as much as we can't figure it out.

For those going on your interview next week... have fun, try to relax, and talk to the pharm students and other interviewees. I'm pretty sure that EVERYTHING you do that day is being scrutinized... just keep that in mind.

Congratulations to those just accepted!

I know it seems that UT's method is very random. The two most important parts of the applicant is the interview and pharmacy experience. Everything else like grades and PCAT only get you the interview invite.

And Knick, I'm sorry you didn't get in man. I thought you had it. I hope you get in somewhere this cycle, even if it isn't your top choice.

Does anyone know if any other school asks you to leave them a photo?

Knick, I'm sorry about the sad news. I was really cheering for you...But hey, keep your head up. You know you're more than qualified for their program. Too bad they can't see that. It's their loss. Best of luck.

Edit: I'm STILL cheering for you!

I wouldn't exactly say that experience is a big part, I've been in pharmacy for over 11 years and 8 of those I've been a tech... I've done retail and clinical/hospital and I didn't even get invited for an interview...🙁

Hey Tharper CONGRATULATIONS!! I'm happy for you! Sorry to RN2Pharmacy I got the exact same email from Dr. Wilcox, so your not alone..

Knick,

You'll get into Tech and A&M for sure---based on their past acceptance histories. Don't dwell on the rejection, make the most of your other opportunities. The pharmacy profession needs people like you. Hope to see you in the field one day.

Have all the rejection letters come out yet? (even for those who have interviewed)

Life has dealt me two options:

Apply to a PhD program (of which I am not interested) that will take me because of my GPA and standardized test taking ability

or

Pick up trash and sell it at flea markets like my father does for a living

People say that they want to offer you the ability to do better things in life. I have seen no evidence for this.

Hey Knick sorry about the rejection, if it makes you feel any better embarassingly enough this is my 2nd year applying and getting rejected..If I can get past the stupid PCAT I'm gonna apply next year, I'm also thinking of applying to PA school and maybe even Optometry but pharmacy is all I've really done so its still my main goal..Life sux but only to make us better and stronger..I just think when I'm done with pharmacy school I'm gonna make my mark big time somehow, someway..(can you hear the ROCKY music playing in the background)

Have you emailed Dr.Wilcox?

I did, but I haven't gotten an answer. I think all the deferral letters were sent last Friday, all the acceptances today, and maybe some rejections today? I haven't gotten any emails from UT yet so I have no clue what is up with my application.

He's usually pretty quick with answering emails... hopefully you'll get a reply first thing tomorrow morning. Good luck!

Hey, last post for the night, promise. I just wanted to say thank you, thank you so much for all of you that congratulated me for getting in. It's been really tough and a long exhausting process (as I'm sure you all know) and I'm just so happy that I had so many people to help me out along the way. I really appreciate all the support. And with my husband in Iraq and my family in Australia, I really don't have anyone to share my happiness with so thank you all for putting with me and sharing in my happiness! Thank you so much!

Just wanted to say thank you everyone for the encouraging words and support. It's too bad that I didn't get my chance this year, but who knows...like my other post said...third time's the charm? ha ha j/k. Who knows...maybe Texas Tech is where I'm supposed to be. We'll just have to wait and see after my interview in three weeks. For everyone that got accepted, I'm jealous! But seriously, Congratulations!

hey everyone thanks a lot for the interview advice and such idk what i would've done without this site.... i was reading over this thread the night before the UT interview and i gotta say it stressed me out a lot (thanks knickerbocker) and prepared me (thanks tharper =) )
btw knickerbocker i feel like you're being a sore loser with that new "saw 'em off" avatar... you can't go against one of the biggest student body's in teh country for your whole life simply because a 30 minute interview didn't go well. that's really immature.
you should join this thread because me and a friend both agreed you should
mike36 prolly knows what he's talkin about, he's a ut pharm student and he had kloesel for the first semester. like he said, the interview puts everyone on the same page where gpa and pcat scores no longer matter cuz that got you the interview.

Yeah..I mean honestly its bad you got rejected but you can't insult the interviewers by calling them "racists" and the school just because they didn't let you in. You say that you shouldn't have to go to a 2nd or 3rd choice because you were very qualified for their program...well so are thousands of other people at pharmacy schools across the nation! Not everyone can go where they want...nobody is entitled to anything.

Hey y'all! I just wanted to say CONGRATS to everyone who've already received their acceptance letters 🙂 and for those who haven't interviewed...Good luck! For those that didn't get accepted, I highly recommend you speak with Dr. Wilcox. He's really nice and will tell you what you need to improve on for next year's application process. I know someone who didn't get in until their 3rd try...so don't give up! If you felt ur interview was bad, then try doing mock interviews.

anyway, enjoy your summer because it'll probably be your last free summer for a while. Travel, relax, have fun. (seriously, don't stress out by trying to get ahead and study because u'll have time to do that during the school year). 🙂 PM me if you have any questions! I'm always happy to help 🙂 See you guys soon!

Good point. Seriously, for those of you starting as a P1 this fall, enjoy your summer. Do not do anything school related if you can help it, and if you have a job try not to work too much. Not getting to rest and relax before starting pharmacy school is a really big mistake, in my opinion.

And good luck to those still waiting!

I have a quick question on the requirement of fulfilling 200hours of pharmacy experience prior to rotation....Since I never work as a pharm tech, I think I must do this! I've just heard something like if you get into UT, that means you have a status to work as pharmacy intern everywhere, and you can earn those hours....how is this actually work? can anyone who had experiences related to this explain for me more?

You will apply for an intern license with the TSBP your spring semester. After you complete your first year (May), you will receive your license and can work as an intern under a preceptor (if there is not a preceptor at the pharmacy you work at, you cannot accrue intern hours). To get your license, you must have successfully completed the first year (no F's).

Typically, students will get their hours done the summer after the P1 year, because we do not have classes that summer. This is when I plan to do mine.

Although this seems like a minor dilemma compared to a rejection, I do hope some advice can be given. I have recently been accepted into both UT and UH. There are great things about both of the programs and I am struggling deciding between the two. I do realize that UT is #2, but that is really not going to seal the deal for me. Any thoughts? I'm sure other people out there have been accepted into both. What is your reason for choosing one over the other?

I wasn't calling my interviewers racist; I was merely taking a jab at UT's racist past (that math professor they had until 1969 who was openly opposed to blacks).

Actually, people are entitled through through things like affirmative action and non-merit admissions; if not, I would have had one of your spots simply because of my GPA and PCAT.

thanks mike36...I know I might soundd stupid and uninformed, but who is really "preceptor"? A licensed pharmacist? I just don't really understand the term...does UT provide help to find a place to work as interns for us newcomers?

First of all, the avatar is a joke - my best chance now is getting into A&M's school. And who is their biggest rival?

Also, why should GPA and PCAT not matter? What would the public think if there was a preference for students who did not perform as well? There would be an uproar. Yes, other attributes are important, but honestly, I think people care more about their TPNs being correctly made and their prescriptions being correct than they do about the pharmacist's nervousness in an interview.

Also, here is some advice. You are soon to be a professional. Your writing is like something you'd find on a cell phone or in instant messaging. Actually, it's worse than that. I'd recommend writing clearly so that you have that habit in the future.

Non-merit admissions? Affirmative action? I'm white so I didn't get my spot because of that...and I'm not really sure what you mean by non-merit - i think there is a lot of merit behind an interview. If you are extremely introverted then some schools don't bother because usually introverted pharmacists a huge asset. I mean who wants to go into a pharmacy where the pharmacist is scared to death?

Just stop it, complaining will not get you anywhere. I know you're angry and frustrated because you may feel you're more qualified to get in than some people who have been accepted. You have great stats, solid volunteer experience, and leadership...now they all sound great, but as some people have said here, sometimes you just don't know what went wrong with your application. It's terrible the result is not what you want it to be, even if you feel you deserve it, but the best thing you can do now is move on. I hope the wounds in your heart heal quickly.

you have no idea what you're talking about. really. you have your idea of how the process works and then there's reality. grow up.

I'm retiring this account. I even made my final avatar better, the old one that I had for a while, back before I was crushed like this.

Good luck to those of you who got in... And hopefully the rest of you will have good news before long.

Wow, I have missed a lot since last night! Try not to be too hard on knick... the guy is obviously just upset.

Anyway, on a totally unrelated note... I'm going to be studying hard in these last few weeks of the semester, but if anyone has questions on the upcoming interview or any other part of the application process, now or in the future, feel free to pm me. I'll try my best to answer asap. I just figured, everyone here has been so great that I would really like to "pay it forward." If anything, I think it'd just be nice to talk to someone who had been through the whole application process. So don't be afraid... I'm generally a nice person!

I second that! I don't think I would have gotten in if it wasn't for SDN, so I'd definitely love to return the favor to others. I don't bite, and I'd love to share my experience/advice with anyone who wants them!

Tangent--I feel very special to have started a thread which is now 10+ pages. lol:laugh: It seems like such a short time ago that I was asking what it takes to get into to UT🙂

thanks mike36...I know I might soundd stupid and uninformed, but who is really "preceptor"? A licensed pharmacist? I just don't really understand the term...does UT provide help to find a place to work as interns for us newcomers?

A preceptor is a licensed pharmacist that is registered with the TSBP as a preceptor. I am not sure what requirements they have to go through to be a preceptor, but any licensed pharmacist can go through the process.

The ratio of interns to preceptors at a store must be 1 intern to 1 preceptor. For instance, if two pharmacy students with intern licenses work the same shift, and only one preceptor is on that shift, then one of the students can be an intern and the other works as a tech for that shift.

So it doesn't matter how many preceptors are working at the store overall, but what shift they work. If I am at a store with 4 preceptors, but none work my shift, then I cannot work as an intern.

are there a lot of licensed pharmacists also as preceptors? I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to find any to work for...Are you starting to look for an internship like that this summer, mike36?

So uh... Knick... you're out there somewhere lurking around still... maybe creating a new profile... no hard feelings man... I understand.

Maybe we'll meet some day. Maybe PM me from your new account?

It shouldn't be difficult to find one. I just got a job at an independent pharmacy (start in two weeks). The pharmacist that hired me is not a preceptor anymore, but he said he wants to get it renewed next month. If he doesn't, then I will have to go somewhere else.

Sorry to see you go Knick. Best of luck with your other schools.

I want to apologize to all of you (except for BADD, who was trying to get a negative response out of me).

I've had such a rough time these past several months. It just seems like one bad thing after the other, from the major - a relative has recently fallen ill, to the minor - the water heater developed a major leak and wet the place. Even the small things have become so large as of late, and I was hoping that this would be the relief that I have been needing for so long, but it never came.

I've decided to reinvent myself; I'm going to be more positive about the situation, and, if I have to, I'll just keep applying.

I've chosen an appropriate avatar to symbolize my "rebirth."

I am glad you came back. I usually don't post in response to your threads, but I do read them. Applying sucks, I know. I already have 12 rejections under my belt (hint: pharmacy school was not the only place I applied to), but I'm already used to rejection. And although sometimes people say it just to make you feel better, it's really the school's loss.

Oh, and I didn't apply to UT Austin because I would have had to take an extra semester of French.

mike36, which hours are you referring to? The intern hours are supposed to be part of a college of pharmacy's curriculum. One doesn't receive credit for participating in internships in the summer between the P1 and P2 year if it is not part of the college's internship program. I was under the impression that one could not be paid for work counting toward internships. Maybe check the TSBP website;
Specifically "(C) None of the internship hours acquired may be substituted for any of the hours required in the Texas college of pharmacy internship program."

I didn't mean to criticize cuz I know the process is very stressful... :-\ no hard feelings to anyone.

Anyway, idk if this is the correct thread for looking for roommies but was anyone looking to find an apartment in Austin for the fall? I was looking for a roommate.
you can PM me if that's easier!

The reason that we get the first summer off is for the purpose of getting our 200 hours. These are the Early Practice Experiential hours, not the P4 internship year.

Is that specific for your school? Ours start in the Fall and is coordinated through the College of Pharmacy. I don't think it counts unless its through the college?
