University of Toledo MSBS 2012-2013 (SMP)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is there anymore input on this? I have to respond to Toledo by tomorrow so I'm just trying to weigh my options some more. Thanks!

Are you instate for EMVS? If yes, then go to EMVS. If no, pick Toledo.
Both schools seem to accept lots of their own SMP students. It's easy to get OH residency. VA instate status is impossible to attain for educational purpose as far as I know.
In short, if VA resident, go with EMVS. If not, send that letter of intent to Christine right now.😀

What about other stuff besides residency? How about the schools overall? Which one is in a nicer area and which one will offer a better education? Also, which one will help me get into medical school the most? Both at their respective MD schools and at other medical schools?

EVMS historically accepts close to 80% of Medical Master's matriculants into their medical school, whereas Toledo historically accepts 65%...this past year, Toledo accepted 80%. Toledo medical students also seem to match at more competitive specialties overall for residency. Toledo is definitely in an area with higher crime rate, although most students have no issues as long as they don't live too close to campus (walking distance). Toledo is also known for especially harsh winters, while Norfolk floods periodically. Norfolk is by the beach.

It looks like there isn't a deposit for accepting the offer? Can anyone confirm this?

Nvm. I ended up giving up my spot. Hope it goes to someone deserving. Good luck!

No deposit required. Just initial the top parts, sign the bottom and send the letter back to Christine.

Last year they accepted people until the end of July.... I don't see anything like last year happening here at all.

relax i didn't get in until mid/late july and I had solid stats.

The guy who helped CBC with admissions got promoted, so it seems that she is on her own. She also is dealing with revamping clinical decision making (which will be new this year).

So she has her plate full.

Patience.

Lastly,

The medical school courses are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more important than anything else.

Block 1 Biochem sucks -- so get ready. Just try to high-pass the class (80-90) to be safe.

The masters classes are extremely easy in camparison. The public health ones are automatic A's and most people get B's in the science ones.

I got B's because I burned out after biochem and no one ever said a thing. Just DO NOT get C's. C's look very very bad and are GPA torpedoes.

You guys are welcome to approach ANY of us at any time with questions. I had a really cool down to earth class -- so you guys shouldn't have any issues meeting us or feeling comfortable talking to us.

Day 1 you'll get a 500 page packet and be told a test in 2 weeks. Test 4 is 3 weeks of material and a packet that is almost 1000 pages. They build you up for sure.

The interviews were hte most stresstime part of the year. We were given a time/place to meet the night before the interview. We had a general idea of when we were going, but some people thought they got screwed and were unprepared. But it all worked out.

👍👍 Thank you very much for doing this. I am hoping to be in your position next year so I could help the next batch of applicants :xf:

Last year when did you get your financial aid award letter? I am looking for apartments right now and a few of them did require my award letter (in lieu of a cosigner).

hmmm.... I'm not sure. I just remember it working out..

email donna[email protected] -- she is our/your financial aid officer for everything health science.

Just a tip....

If you get admitted and your flaw is the MCAT (Score below 27).

Do yourself a major favor and retake it before schools starts or plan on taking it in jan/feb

Holy Franz I understand where you are coming from, however I honestly don't think another MCAT is prudent especially if your practice scores are not leaps and bounds ahead of your current score.

Like Holy Franz has said in previous posts the classes, especially the med classes, are time consuming and require your undivided attention.

Physio and anatomy are on par with rigorous undergrad advanced Bio classes however they don't seem so tough because of the amount of free time to devote to them. I believe that it would be very easy to neglect the grad courses while studying for the MCAT and hurt your GPA which could raise red flags.

The take home message is: If you are accepted into the program, your stats are good enough to get you into the school. I see no reason to stress yourself out preparing for another MCAT. Just do your best in the classes.

The classes are time consuming however please remember if you devote adequate time to your studies YOU WILL DO FINE!!!

Welcome to all that have been accepted and good luck to those still waiting ( I didn't get in until july 17)

Please don't hesitate to ask Holy Franz or I any further questions

Hey guys,
Congratulations to everyone attending this fall! I am looking at the apartments around the school and wanted to know if anyone needed a roommate (im 22, a female). I will be moving from CA next month, let me know if anyone is interested.

Congrats to all who have gotten in! Long time lurker but decided to make an account to ask some questions so others can benefit from it too.

Thank you Holy Franz and Clevelandreason for tips and advices about this program! I do have a few questions regarding the program courses. If I have the correct info, I think the medical courses in which we will be graded against the M1 curve are the Cellular & Molecular Biology and Physiology courses. Are there other courses that are also the medical courses? Does Physiology course include anatomy (i.e: lots of detailed memorization of body parts instead of conceptualization of processes)? And what format are the tests for those classes? Are they multiple choices (or) a mix of MCs and short answers? Also, any undergrad textbook you would recommend us to bring....even if it's just for reference? or any useful textbooks or books you would recommend to us? Last but not least, could you also tell us something you wish you would have known before starting this program? Any other advices are also welcomed 🙂 Thank you so much!

The classes you take with the med students include cellular and molecular biology (often referred to as biochem) and neuroscience.

The classes you will take with msbs students only include biostats, physiology, epidemiology, and anatomy/pathophysiology.

You will be expected to know both detailed anatomy and conceptualized physiology in each of the classes I have mentioned other than epi and stats.

Tests in the med classes are 100% multiple choice
Tests in the grad classes are more of a mix

Don't buy any of the books they tell you are required.
All of the material on the exams is from the notes they give you.
I brought an anatomy text that I used a handful of times however I would have managed without it.

Lastly I wish I would have known that despite the classes, you will still have a lot of free time on the weekends to have fun.

Thanks for the info! So just like the above post said, as long as you can stay high-pass (80-90) in these two medical classes, a grade of B in one or two of the grad classes won't hurt you? Do they only look at your grades in medical classes when considering about admission to UTCOM (or) is there a cut-off overall GPA we should maintain to get into their med school?

I'm also curious to know if there are students who decided to matriculate to their state school even though they were accepted to UTCOM. I personally don't have any family ties in Ohio......any other reasons why a student might choose either their state school or UTCOM?

Do they give mock-interviews for MSBS students? I just think it might be helpful for those who have not experienced a medical school interview.

I have asked tons of questions so I will stop now 🙂 I'm happy to know that UT students are very helpful and that we will still have some free time despite all these classes. That makes coming into this program a lot less intimidating. Again, thank you for everything! 🙂

Just one little addition to Summerlily questions, is there anyone in your class who did well in the program but somehow did not do well in the interview and got rejected?

Thanks a lot for answering all of our questions!! 🙂

when i sign into the toledo website to check my application status, it says "decision made" but in the decision box it says "please contact admissions office." also, i have not received an email. does anyone else have this same thing? what does it mean?

Just received a call that I was accepted today. Im so conflicted because I really didnt think I was going to get in so I forgot about it and now idk what to do. I would basically have 3 weeks to get all my crap together and move all the way from Miami. And Im taking the Aug 10 MCAT...crap crap crap!!

How are you doing on your AAMC practices? If you are almost finished with the study and doing significantly better on the AAMC, I would go ahead and take the exam, if not, dont bother. Like someone said earlier in this thread, if you are accepted into the program, you are good enough to be accepted into the SOM. Take the spot and give it all you got. And congrats!!🙂

I got the same message! I'm guessing it's a wait-list decision. Cuz if it was an "accepted" or "rejected" they would tell you straight up.....right???!!! lol

I think that means rejection, but I might be mistaken

Did you guys use the same LORs for applying to med school as for the MSBS program? Just wondering. 🙂

hey guys, i'm planning on applying to toledo's msbs next year and was wondering how science and overall gpa's are calculated, is it similar to amcas or different?

The application is closed and on the website it doesn't state anything about gpa calculations. Appreciate any feedback.

Are you guys saying the deadline to apply for Fall 2013 entry has passed?

I thought deadlines are in january, as the official guide stickied thread states.
