Yeah, it sounds to me like the adcoms are doing their job. They tend to weed out those who are high and mighty......much like yourself. What people like you don't understand is that there are more students who are "..above average in all categories..." than there are spots. It is the adcoms job to weed out those who they feel are week in other areas. It may just be my opinion but maybe they saw a little bit of attitude. Heck, anyone who reads your posts can sense that.
Oh, they let people know before March alright. They rejected my arse before the 2nd week of January. I was above average in all categories, did research in a biochem lab there that led to a paper in Cell, smoked the MCAT, but had just a haid low GPA. It didn't take them long to tell me to shove off. LDS, RM, white, resident, etc.
Truth be told, it's the greatest thing that happened to me. I might have gone to the U and loved it, I might have gone to the U and hated it, and any other number of things might have happened. Bottom line is, my current situation is FANTASTIC and I couldn't be happier. I don't want to be one of those cliche mormons but "everything happens for a reason..."
Sounds like my neighbor back home and one of his study partner's situations, except they had great GPAs. They got flat out rejected to the U so they had to take their second choices: Duke and Hopkins. Darn. My bro-in-law got in to the U, however. He was a solid applicant from BYU, though very different from your typical BYU grad, they seemed to like that. They accepted him in January of 2006. I think they probably leave about 5 openings for what they think is the typical BYU student, then pick about ten more BYU students who have something that makes them not "run-of-the-mill," but I am not on the ADCOM, that is just what is seems to me from the BYU students they have taken in the past. I tried to let my diverse side out in the interview. I did some research in my family history hoping to find some native american blood but even if I found it, i would just be playing up something that doesn't contribute to my identity. So, I just tried to be real in the interview and if I am not what they are looking for, at least I got a nice pen from them.
I personally agree with SCOOTDOC. I don't think what he said was at all harsh. I also find it stupid/petty that someone would find a speliing error and make a big deal over it. SCOOTDOC was probably typing rather quickly and didn't think much of it. He/she was probably in a hurry so he/she could get back to studying......Oh yeah, I forget the person who commented on the spelling most likely isn't a medical student and doesn't really know what real studying is,so they wouldn't possibly understand. SCOOTDOC is obviously smart enough to get into med school, and if he/she is who I think he/she is, he/she is in the top 10% of the class. So until you actually get to medical school and are on the level of SCOOTDOC, maybe dial it down a bit. It makes you look really dumb. I'm sure there is an english literature forum you could join somewhere if you want to correct spelling.
Pre-meds ---> What the freak man? I wouldn't accept any of you if I were ADCOM
