Yeah, it sounds to me like the adcoms are doing their job. They tend to weed out those who are high and mighty......much like yourself. What people like you don't understand is that there are more students who are "..above average in all categories..." than there are spots. It is the adcoms job to weed out those who they feel are week in other areas. It may just be my opinion but maybe they saw a little bit of attitude. Heck, anyone who reads your posts can sense that.

Oh, they let people know before March alright. They rejected my arse before the 2nd week of January. I was above average in all categories, did research in a biochem lab there that led to a paper in Cell, smoked the MCAT, but had just a haid low GPA. It didn't take them long to tell me to shove off. LDS, RM, white, resident, etc.

Truth be told, it's the greatest thing that happened to me. I might have gone to the U and loved it, I might have gone to the U and hated it, and any other number of things might have happened. Bottom line is, my current situation is FANTASTIC and I couldn't be happier. I don't want to be one of those cliche mormons but "everything happens for a reason..."

Sounds like my neighbor back home and one of his study partner's situations, except they had great GPAs. They got flat out rejected to the U so they had to take their second choices: Duke and Hopkins. Darn. My bro-in-law got in to the U, however. He was a solid applicant from BYU, though very different from your typical BYU grad, they seemed to like that. They accepted him in January of 2006. I think they probably leave about 5 openings for what they think is the typical BYU student, then pick about ten more BYU students who have something that makes them not "run-of-the-mill," but I am not on the ADCOM, that is just what is seems to me from the BYU students they have taken in the past. I tried to let my diverse side out in the interview. I did some research in my family history hoping to find some native american blood but even if I found it, i would just be playing up something that doesn't contribute to my identity. So, I just tried to be real in the interview and if I am not what they are looking for, at least I got a nice pen from them.

Read UofUnut's post. It is an accurate depiction of the current situation at the UofUSOM. 1/3 of our class is from BYU, and blah blah blah (just read it). So, don't buy in to the whole anti-BYU garbage. Anyway, best of luck to your "Friends" back home, and ryandote as well. Don't hate on me because of my post. I just call things as I see them, and I too was probably a bit harsh and for that I apologize. Thank you for calling me on that. The ADCOM bashing gets a little old after a while. You guys think you are bashing adcoms, but in reality it directly reflects on the students they do choose to fill the class, My classmates and I. Trust me the ADCOM do not just choose anyone off the street. All my classmates are very professional, intelligent students who will make outstanding doctors. Again, best of luck to you all. If you have any questions about UofU admissions, curriculum, or any other general questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

I personally agree with SCOOTDOC. I don't think what he said was at all harsh. I also find it stupid/petty that someone would find a speliing error and make a big deal over it. SCOOTDOC was probably typing rather quickly and didn't think much of it. He/she was probably in a hurry so he/she could get back to studying......Oh yeah, I forget the person who commented on the spelling most likely isn't a medical student and doesn't really know what real studying is,so they wouldn't possibly understand. SCOOTDOC is obviously smart enough to get into med school, and if he/she is who I think he/she is, he/she is in the top 10% of the class. So until you actually get to medical school and are on the level of SCOOTDOC, maybe dial it down a bit. It makes you look really dumb. I'm sure there is an english literature forum you could join somewhere if you want to correct spelling.

Pre-meds ---> What the freak man? I wouldn't accept any of you if I were ADCOM

LOL :laugh::laugh: LOL

Actually, I was accepted to school Mr. "I think I'm so cool because I'm a med. student"

Also, I probably wouldn't need to correct grammar and spelling in an english literature forum.

Perhaps we could get the thread back on track? Does anyone know when Utah notifications are handed out to those "select few" in January?

utah does send out acceptances before march. i got my letter in early february (years and years ago). so it defintiely does happen.

as far as all this anti-byu bs goes... i get so sick and tired of it. a ton of my class is from byu. they are great students and classmates - and they all have characteristics that set them apart; spending time with medical missions abroad, tons and tons of leadership, etc. what these whiners and complainers fail to mention on these boards is that the thing that hurts them in utah (aka, they look similar to every other candidate from byu) is what sets them apart and HELPS them get into places like duke and hopkins (aka being a white boy from UTAH). but of course, they are not crying about it then...
