University of Utah

Yes, I hope they offer me an acceptance too. Do you know when they inform candidates of acceptance/rejection? I heard that this is one of those schools that you don't know until March. I don't know why they are doing that, too cruel.

They said at the interview that they let you know via snail mail around the end of March. They might let a few acceptance letters sneak out in the mail prior to that but for the most part they are non-rolling. Good luck!

I go to undergrad in Utah, and I know a few people that have been accepted already. However, I've also spoken with a lot of current students that said almost the whole class found out in March.

I'm hoping to have Utah as an option, too.

The word on the street is that the U accepts around 10 people early on. These are usually exceptional students who seem a sure bet to want to stay in Utah. By exceptional, I don't mean MCAT -- I mean heavy EC's with depth and LOR's that say "This is the best person on the earth. Heck, I'd let him perform surgery on me now". I know a few who already got in. One is the smartest person I know in Utah who is loved by every prof. or student he meets. Another is perhaps the best-known person in the pre-med community at the U.

Everyone else finds out in late March.

GoodDoctor - please expand on the comment about the best known pre-med at the U. Do these numbers reflect Utah residents only or are OOS and Idaho residents included in the 10 or so? Good luck to you during this process! 👍

i am an Idaho applicant for U of Utah and got an admission offer about a week ago..I was very surprised, seeing as they basically told us not to expect anything until March. I am not sure if they consider Idaho applicants separately, but I would imagine they do...hope this helps.

Sar, do you mind to tell us your MCAT score and when was your interview?

Congrats!!! Where else have you interviewed? Is Utah your top choice or are you leaning towards another school? When did you interview? Weren't the admissions staff amazingly kind and helpful? Good luck to you Sarchis!

It looks like Sarchis answered the question about Idaho students. I wouldn't have know, since my info is word-of-mouth from other pre-meds and the occasional med student here at the U and I haven't asked much about Idaho. If my numbers are on, there are 10 spots reserved for Idaho residents. My guess is that Sarchis might be the 1/10 or so who may have gotten an early acceptance.

I have a friend who is an M1 who got his acceptance in Jan last year shortly after he interviewed. He moved back to Utah specifically to apply to the U and the Dean knew this. So, this would explain the early acceptance. They knew it was his first and only choice.

For the "best-known pre-med" I was talking about a student that everyone knows by name and face. In my classes with this person, everyone knew who it was and the profs all knew this person. Very active in some visible clubs, volunteer activities, etc. Someone I just met said, "Did you hear Name Name got accepted?" just assuming I knew who it was. Just one of those students everyone knows... and no one is surpised at the acceptance.

MCATS don't matter so much at the U, I think. MCATS last year were lower than the year before, a trend I didn't see at many schools. With a 28.5 - 29 average, this gives lots of room to accept some low scores since there will be plenty of applicants left with higher scores to even it out. I know a 25 and a 26 who got accepted. The U has plenty of 32 and 33 applicants to choose from to even this out.

The Dean explained that MCAT is 10%, GPA is 10%, and the remaining 80% comes from a committee score that is based on interview score, community volunteering, shadowing, clinincal exposure, research experience, LORs, PS. The U is definitely beyond the numbers.

I am a Utah resident that has interviewed and am waiting to hear from the U as well. This is definitely my top choice school, so I am just hoping that in March/first week of april, I get the package, not a single envelope.

Just a quick question... for those who received an early admissions offer, how far apart was the interview and the offer? Just wondering since i have heard about a few people who have recieved them... I wanted to know how long they had to wait.

Well, keep updating on the progess...

I interviewed on Nov 11 and haven't heard anything. No implication there that I expect to, but just thought I'd chime in...

Anyone know when the Idaho adcom meets?

To clear up a few questions:

1)Utah does not operate on a rolling admission, hence the wait for most students until March.

2) There are 102 positions at Utah SOM, 8 of these are dedicated to Idaho residents. They are looking at expanding this to 104 with 10 from Idaho, but this is currently not the case.

3)They do, like all other schools, notify you of a rejection.

The UofU SOM is definitely in my top 5 schools as well, esp. with the 2 trauma I certified centers available to do rotations at (although LDS will soon be a trauma II center when the central valley IHC hospital opens in the next year or two). The school is awesome, the nurses are some of the best I have ever met, and I can only hope I am lucky enough to be offered acceptance here. Best of luck to the rest of you Utah applicants.

Thanks for the info, but do you know when the adcom meets each month? I was just curious. I am aware that I have a long wait in front of me, but it is well worth it for this school.

Do you have to be a mormon to go to this school?

Do they prefer mormons or perhaps bring religion into school activities?
If not, I wouldn't mind living in a peaceful place for four years, I guess.

HAHAHA, no offense, but people's ignorance is quite humorous at times. I've lived in Utah my whole life. While there are more religious 'nuts' here, I'm sure if you traveled to Vatican City, or parts in the deep south (the bible belt), it would be no different.

In all actuality, the UofU SOM likes to show that it is more liberal in order to attract outside students. So, no, you don't have to be mormon, and there is no religious element, other than the churches being like starbucks, with one on every corner (not literally, although there are a large number within a very small radius, typically).

It's an awesome state to live in though. Although you have to search it out, the nightlife is pretty good, lots of good bars around. The skiing is some of the best in the entire world, and southern Utah is absolutely gorgeous. In addition, it's close to Wyoming and the Tetons, which I love, as well as things like Vegas and Cali.

Seriously, if you choose not to live in a place due to the religious undertones, I pity you. The people here are just as normal as most places, although the politics of this state do drive me insane. But if you can separate yourself from that, and the occasional dirty look, then good for you, this state is awesome.

P.S. No, I'm not mormon. I'm extremely liberal.

No offense taken.
I've hardly been able to travel outside of California and thus have no idea what it's like in the red states.

Unless you are tied to the state or an MD/PhD student you have no hope of getting in being from California. But I agree, Utah is a beautiful state with a lot of fantastic aspects about it.

Here is some info to help Utah lovers:

1- I am OOS, interviewd Nov 3rd, and received an acceptance letter dated Dec 15th.

2- I am not mormon, yet am from Utah originally. It makes things seem "interesting" to outsiders, but really the state and school are great.

3- They said not to expect anything until March, so this was a huge surprise.

Even though I know I won't hear back until end of March/beginning of April I still can't help getting my hopes up everytime I check the mail...please send me a letter!!!

FALSE!!!

Just being from California isn't what makes you have no hope of getting in. Having no ties to the state no matter where you're from will stop you from getting in unless you're a URM, or applying to MD/PhD. I'm from CA, and my only ties are through my wife's family. I just interviewed (which means they must've liked something in my app).

do they send rejections early too...or do people have to wait until March?

yes, they do send some rejections just like they send some acceptances. However, most people won't hear either way until March

It is not a false statement! I was merely replying to his question while keeping in mind that he is from CA. If he would have said he was from Kansas I would have said the exact same thing except I would have inserted Kansas instead of California. Thanks for the additional info though.

Nevermind...
...Moe filled me in...

Do you guys know the approximate date that they will notify us? Early March or late March? I heard March 15, but I am not sure the vailidy of my source. Thanks

During my interview I remember them saying that it would be the end of March, but that is just how I remember it so I am not positive. Keep your fingers crossed!

I just found out I got accepted to Utah on Tuesday! I too was told that I would find out sometime in March. By the way, I'm from California so it was a big shock to get these good news in January. Good luck to everyone!

preop transgendered?

Liz, do you mind to tell us your stat's? When was your interview? Thanks

Just out of curiosity, is your PhD in a related field?

anyone know when the decisions are going to be mailed out? I know some people have already heard but I am still in limbo and was curious.

bumpity bump bump.....come on already utah, its getting bumpy!!!!

I got rejected...

back in January. Yeah, go figure. They told me I wouldn't hear until everyone else heard at the end of March. They must have REALLY not liked me.

I interviewed in early December and got accepted march 6th. Idaho applicant. The U was my top choice by far. Blown away by the school/facilities. Looking for other class of 2011 people. Best of luck!

The word on the street is that letters were being sent out this week. A couple of weeks ago a classmate called and was told it would be March 30. But just last week, another person called and was told they would now be sent out this week (Mar 18). I got my acceptance a little while ago, but I'm still excited to find out which of my friends/classmates will be joining me. 🙂 There's a good feeling of cameraderie that will tranlate well into an entering class.

I know, the new facilities are incredible (although the old lecture halls are a bit uncomfortable, but we shouldn't really have any classes there). And as I said before, the applying U pre-med's are a nice collaborative bunch. I know some M1 and M2's who say that the same is true of their classes. Are you going to the Info Session on April 13?

Yeah, I am going to the April "question and answer" session. How about you?

In response to the previous post, my buddy talked to UoU admin on Friday and they told him they were sent out or would be sent out by today.

Anyone know how many Idaho slots are left? I've noticed a couple of people mentioning that they have received acceptances as Idaho residents, which mean there can only be a few left if any....

oh man...come on!!!!!

Any idaho applicants been accepted to both UofU and U-Dub? If so , what are your plans?
