ahumdinger I'm sooo sorry!!! That really sucks, maybe he was just being tough on you to see if you could handle it, and I'm sure you passed that aspect. I feel bad because I was comming on her to pst that I got in, and I hate to jump for joy after the UW was so rough on you. Anyway, I got an email from the UW on 5/11 (I sent them an email last week telling them I'd be out of town, which is probably why they emailed me). So they're officially up tp #16!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure the unranked list is right around the corner. Good luck to everyone and keep up the faith!
PS, if this is far from perfect engligh, it's because I just finished a drinking game in the greek isles, I have to go party some more since I got into the UW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I'm doomed. I really blew it. He really grilled me good. First he asked me where else I applied, etc. Then he told me that my interview went very well and that everyone liked me. I was all happy but then it took a sour turn. (oh not to mention that he said I was a bit idealistic, in interview) He said that one of the issues that came up was that I had not lived in WA for very long, which is true, I'm really a resident only by virtue of my parents living there. After that he asked me why I wanted to go to UW (or maybe he asked me that first), and I stated that I was looking for a balance between patient care and research, which was what impressed me most after my work this year (I work with geriatricians/neurologists who do research). I contrasted this with U of Missouri, which does not have a good research emphasis. Oh, what else? He asked me where I saw myself in 10-15 years, I said I wanted to be a geriatrician, and he went on to counter everything I said. "why do we need geriatricians? I have a perfectly good internist who's not a geriatrician!" and "All that geriatricians do is take away all the patients' medication and then they come to me with heart failure."

He then asked me about the research I do now, and then we ended with a lovely reprise of my not-quite-WA-resident status.

Oh jeez I really blew it, he was really intimidating! And he joked at the end that he just draws cards for who gets in off the unranked list. Great. I told him that I hope he draws me.

Oh and 14 people have been taken off the ranked list.

i'm going to go dig myself a hole and cry in it. Seagal, you must have had a different Dr. samson!
Oh wow, so this was like interview part deux??? 🙁 I am very sorry you had a very tough time this morning! Keep your chin up, there is always a possibility that your cards may be in line with the stars on the 15th!

hey guys, thanks for the kind words. After retelling the scenario to my parents and my boyfriend, the encounter does not seem as rough anymore. It was indeed like interview part deux, but given that Dr. Samson said my original interview went well and I was well liked, I can perhaps hope for the same reception from him. At any rate, I'm sure the meeting will not hurt my chances. A face-to-face is always a bonus!

CONGRATS SPARKYGIRL!! Geez that was fast, Dr. Samson told me this morning it was only 14!

Ahumdinger, I am so sorry you had that experience. Perhaps like sparkysgirl said maybe he was just testing you. You never know what kind of impression you made on him. I remember someone saying what a horrible interview he had with Samson and now he is MS2 at the UW.
Don't forget that, we tend to be our harshest critics. I hope you are going to relax and enjoy this weekend. 🙂 🙂 🙂 You deserve it! Best of luck to you.

I called the office today around 2ish and the lady said they've taken 18. She asked me to call on Monday. She also said they are expecting movement. So, keep your fingers crossed!

Thought I'd post and let y'all know that I just officially withdrew my acceptance from UW. Good luck to you all on the waitlist.

what's the number to call? who have you been asking about the list. any more movement? aren't there ANY unranked people here?!

I'm an unranked person. I called Brooke directly and asked her. Her number is 206-543-8662. You can also call 206-543-7212 and have them transfer you to admissions, but I always got an answering machine. Brooke just told me that the ranked alternate list was exhausted but didn't say anything about the unranked alternate list. Hopefully things keep moving to open up a slot for us.

thanks for the number. I guess at this point there really isn't much they can tell us. here's to waiting! :luck:

Good luck ahumdinger!
We are all rooting for you. 🙂

Hi I just called Brooke and she says that no students have been accepted yet off the unranked list. They are still waiting on Dr. Samson to make the decisions. But there IS room for movement as of now!! Oh jeez, now I realize I should have asked how much room. How many students will be off the unranked list.

Wow! Thats great news for you guys! I'll certainly have my fingers crossed for you guys. Subsequently today is the day of the WWAMI lottery...

I called brooke again today. Dr. Samson is still deliberating. But then brooke said something that made it sound like Dr. Samson is deliberating for IF there is an opening. So I pressed for more info-- confirmation that indeed there are spots. However, she does not know how many, nor when Dr. Samson will finish deciding.

argh.

I leave tomorrow for China. Maybe that will be good luck for me. leaving the country was good luck for sparkygirl!

Congratulations DrNeva242!! Were you an unranked alternate or in the WWAMI lottery? I am curious if Dr Samsom has begun to make his selections from the unranked pool??

Congrats DrNeva!!

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I lived in Pullman for a while and its not that bad (if you do end up there). True, it is like 5-6 hours to any city of significant size, but you'd be able to get a lot of studying done 🙂 . I am a little suprised they don't just have enough Eastern WA people to fill those spaces. Good luck to the rest of you waiting! :luck:

Yes, Dr. Samson is taking people off the unranked list. I know because his assistant called me earlier today, saying I got IN!! I still can hardly believe it!!
Congrats!!!

hey guys, ahumdinger just left today to go to China for two weeks and I'm watching her email while she's away....

SHE GOT IN! WOOHOO!

Oh what dramatic irony, right now she's somewhere over the north pacific not knowing what drama has unfolded 30k feet below...

wow! I was just reading the rest of this thread and you all are so supportive, its really nice compared to the usual pre-med message board douchiness.

This was my interpretation of the interview too and it looks like we were right. Sampson sounded like he was confrontational, but dingers just kept defending her interest in geriatrics instead of caving into his criticism and he eventually conceeded the point...or at least let her have it! I think that's what you've got to do, show them that you have the strength of your convictions to stand behind what you've said even if a powerful superior disagrees with you.

Best part of the interview by far, which I'm shocked she didn't share, was when he laid down this pearl, in a German accent, "The committee liked your interview. You are perhaps a little idealistic, but don't worry, med school will beat it out of you."

it all worked out in the end!

This is my third year reading the UW waitlist thread on SDN, and it still makes me happy to see so many students who really want to come to UW. 🙂 It really is a supportive environment where people work hard together and help each other through.

Congratulations to all who have gotten in and good luck to all those who are still waiting!

I was a on the ranked alternate list. I just checked my e-mail and they want to send me to Pullman! Noooooooooo! 😡 I've got nothing against WSU, but I'm newly married and my husband would have to find a different job, relocate, etc. so I'm going to appeal the decision. Monica Maul said it was possible, so I guess we'll see.

Hey everyone! I just got back from my china trip. I see velo has updated you all on the good news. moinmoin I'm thrilled that you got in too! I guess I'll mosey on over to the class of 2010 thread now...

interesting note: I STILL haven't received my official packet of acceptance stuff. eek! Talk about nightmarish pre-med legends of people never confirming an acceptance while withdrawing from other schools! luckily velo emailed stella for me, 'cause I did receive some other accepted student mail, and she's resending the original letter. whew!

I wonder how do you know whether you are ranked or not. I have never received an email telling me whether I am ranked or unranked. All I got was an email telling me I was waitlisted and which asked me whether I would want the spot or not.

Good god. you just brought up such an old thread! you know, we have an entire 2009 UWSOM thread that might be more helpful
