hi SDNers,

well, I just called UNLV on friday to check up on my application and they said that I needed two letters of rec from science professors and I know it's my fault for not checking out their requirements earlier because thought I could use the letters I had already, which I have 5 letters (dentist, volunteer coordinator, employer, bio professor, and calc III professor...) ... now they won't look at my application till that one letter is sent in... I can find another science professor to write me one..no problem, but since it will take him about a week, then sending it off.. so about a week and a half... I am afraid that I am going through all that trouble to end up getting rejected..

because I hear how lots of people are applying this year and UNLV are sending rejection letters already..

my stats are average.. and I know it won't hurt to do it anyways, but I am afraid that they will end up rejecting me anyways...

does anyone happen to know UNLV's avg. requirements this cycle?

thanks ahead of time...

they don't release the averages until the cycle is over.. but my adea book says 18 aa, and 17.73 pat from the previous year. 3.2 overall and 3.08 sci gpa
hope that helps.

I know what you're talking about kat. I just called them a few days ago too and they said the exact same thing. My counselor at UCI told me that math is considered as a science so I thought that that would have been a good idea since its more well rounded I guess. But turns out UNLV considers math as a "social science" which doesn't make sense to me at all. Anyways, now I have to find a science professor to write me one which is harder now since I graduated too. Stupid counselors man, they don't know jack. Well, you gotta do what you gotta do I guess and hope for the best. As if my chances aren't bad enough.

sci gpa: 2.79
overall: 2.84
DAT: 23/24/19

anteater eh.. i'm also a uci alum... i had a hard time looking for sci professor, especially because i was a psych major. Hybridgen3, u rocked the dat's.. u shouldn't be worried with those scores.

About the average states. I talked to Dr. Brownstein when he came by our school for some recruiting propoganda. He leads most of the admissions stuff for UNLV and has done it for years.(He worked for Virginia Commonwealth from the 70's til the opening of UNLV). He was telling me that UNLV recieved like a thousand more apps than last year and that the average stats are a little higher. So, the competition just got stiffer.

Good luck

I met with Dr. Brownstein 2 weeks ago and he said last years incoming group stats were a 3.4 overall and a 3.2 SGPA with 18 AA and ~18PAT. That is up 2 grade points up each from last year. He said they'll get 20% more appications than last year which should put them around 2300 or so. It's definitely more competitive this year, not just at UNLV, but every school. It's all those darn MD's telling their kids "Don't be a Physician, be a dentist". I swear half the applicants at my school just woke up one morning and said, "Hey, I think I'll be a dentist?"

yea seriously what the heck is going on? Its happening at my school too.

The averages were just a hair under 3.5 and 3.3 for sci
18 across the board for DAT.
Also realize that out of the 75 spots 40-45 instate and 30-35 out of state something close to that anyways. So if you are out of state your stats better be above the average or you better have some serious juice if you want to get in. you are competing against 2000+ applicants, about 100-150 instaters. good luck.

I was under the impression that it was standard practice for most schools to have 3 LORs: Two Science professors and one optional. Either another college prof or a dentist.

I am not trying to be offensive, but I have to be honest with you. Choosing math as one of your "science" classes is a stretch. Yes you are correct that math is defined as the science of numbers, but in this case I hate to say it, science clearly refers to chemistry, biology, the so called physical and life sciences.

Consider what scores are a part of your Total Science portion of your DAT….

Moreover, some schools will ONLY accept 3 LORs, so I would suggest proceeding with caution when sending out 5 or 6 LORs. This is one of those cases where the old adage applies….

QUALITY not quantity

Good Luck,
