Here, here.

There's been a lot of talk polluting pre-allo recently about prestigious colleges, prestigious med schools, best places to live, etc. etc. I'm starting to seriously wonder if some people around here take the USNews rankings to bed with them at night.

Friends, we need a return to normalcy. We need to take back pre-allo from the freshmen that can't stop thinking about if their college is prestigious enough. Debating an institution's prestige all day will do nothing for you because it's something you largely have no control over.

Can I get an amen?

Do we have any other people here that proudly hail from the midwest? The northwest? The southeast?

We need a thread to extol the virtues and values of the 99.5% of the US that isn't located on Manhattan Island. Don't get me wrong... I love NY and LA. But they are not the end-all-be-all of being an American pre-med.

So... from those that hail from the other 99.5% of the US, what do you like about where you're from or where you are now?

I personally love being from the midwest. I wouldn't want to move too far south because I like getting a decent amount of snow in the winter. My location is nice though because it's been in the 70's for a few weeks now. The football is great (Go Buckeyes!), the city has more ethnic restaurants than I could ever afford to eat at, and rent for an apartment in the cool part of town is quite reasonable.

Personally I'd like to get out at some point either for med school or residency, but I could see myself practicing here in the future. Chicago is by far my fav midwestern city - it's a shame, though, that the malpractice environment is supposedly terrible.

Didn't your football coach and starting quarterback get suspended for part of next year??? The Michigan fan base must be very pleased.

Good luck with that. SDNers probably await the USNews rankings issue more than the SI swimsuit edition.

Oh and your football program is shadier than a maple tree. (for new Yorkers: a tree is "a woody plant that has many secondary branches supported clear of the ground on a single main stem or trunk with clear apical dominance.")

Not sure whether to participate in this thread, doesn't feel prestigious enough... 😉

I lol'd.

Look... people make mistakes. This isn't Watergate. This is a few guys that took paraphenalia that they earned on the football field and made a couple thousand dollars. There isn't pay-for-play like Reggie Bush or like several Auburn players recently admitted being a part of. OSU gained no competitive advantage from it. Although the NCAA may hit them harder because of how bad the NCAA prez looked when Auburn/Cam Newton got off scot free.

UM has no room to talk. RichRod broke the rules and STILL couldn't win the Game. 😀

I will just add my 2 cents that I don't think your undergrad plays as big a roll as you think when it comes to going to med school.

I went to a top tier school, I have six figure debt, and I know plenty of other people who are in med school that went to their state school.

I've said it before, the USNWR just makes you aware of the top 20. Other than that it comes down to whether or not the school is a good fit for you.

If I could go back and do it all again, I would be at my state school. Nobody cares where you did your undergrad when you are a doctor. If they do, it's a passing comment.

Amen, brother

I thought that both OHSU and UW were top tier schools for primary care, and UW was also for research...

Semi-proud Oregon resident (the state is a little to liberal for my complete comfort). Desire to go OHSU because that is the place to go in Oregon.

Hey man, I agree it's blown out of proportion. But come on, knowlingly playing ineligible players and lying about it when it's discovered is a little different than rich rod not properly documenting practice hours. The fact that your program has gotten away for Maurice clarret being paid in college was way worse, so I'm cool with you being punished harsher for less

App State > UM... Nuff said

From the West Coast. Love the weather, love the lifestyle, although the traffic here in CA leaves something to be desired.

Like being near the ocean, as I've done water-related stuff my whole life.
All that being said, CA is one of the most expensive states to practice in as a physician.

Wow...Prestige is not often the right thing to llok at, especially for me. All I want to be is a physician, BUT wouldn't it be great to reside at Hopkins or Mount Sinai......

To look the other way while players exploit their membership on the team for financial profit is no better than paying them directly. The prospect of $$ may well provide the incentive necessary to reel in the top recruits, which DOES give you a competitive advantage.

At my beloved Notre Dame, our players are only guilty of sexual assault and DUI 🙁

OSU Nat'l Championships: 7
UF Nat'l Championships: .... 3.

Game over.

It's "hear, hear" and i should say it from the audience; you dont say it to your audience.

but I agree with most of the rest of what you said. So, hear, hear!

I hail from Oregon. And whatever strange days lay ahead, that's where I'm going back to someday.

Oh we are talking about collegiate sports teams??? Well, I have nothing to contribute. Back to the pre-pharm forum.

I love the Midwest! I did go to a "prestigious" undergrad in MA, but my heart belongs to Kansas😍

I would love to come back to the Midwest for medical school. In fact, I'm doing everything I can to narrow my school list to only include this region! (While being realistic of course!)

I think there's plenty to do and much fun to be had. It's not all cow-tipping and getting drunk out by the lake.

but that happens, too sometimes!

National championships without help from referees during our lifetimes:

UF: 3

OSU:0

No one cares about what happened in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. It'd be like princeton claiming they are football power

+1 for Kansas!

I'll testify!

To the Midwest: Where $200k buys a house you actually want to live in! Where the only commutes longer than 30min. are because you live 20+ miles out in the country! Where a 40F day in January means you hide the winter coat and bust out the shorts!

The coasts say we're boring. We say we're laid back. The coasts think they're hip and trendy. Well, they are, but who really wants the pressure of keeping up all the time?

And I'm glad I got my higher education here, where it's cheap, there was plenty of room for me to do undergrad research, and where med students truly are hands on (the OB rotation in year 3 will require 20 deliveries!).

AMEN!

How do you double post 5 minutes apart from each other.

Florida's a sexy team cuz they've gotten hot over the past 15 years. But it takes longer than that to build a tradition. They weren't exactly dominant once Tebow left...we'll see if they're still relevant in 20 years.

And being over-rated douche bags. Quit being arrogant: get a conference, your best win in the last 15 years was a loss to USC.

If your not in the SEC you ain't playing football..

I endorse this thread. I prefer my towns <20000 pop. Don't give a flying noodle about rankings. I go to an small, inexpensive state school in a sparsely-populated state out west. I'm really happy most people like to live in the big cities on the coast. Leaves more room for the rest of us.
