hey guys

i recently graduated and i applied to many masters program such as Boston, Tuft, Midwestern, and so on. However, i did not get into any of them, so depressing. So now im just worried on what to do and how i should go about this situation and i live in So-cal, and it would be nice to go back to school. I think improving my undergrad gpa should be my first priority, since it was only about 2.8

Any help and advice would be awesome

ThANKs

sorry, im new at this. but what can I do to raise my GPA? i graduated from undergrad already and i came back to my hometown, which is in Los Angeles.
What classes? schools? do i need to be applying.

take undergrad classes @ ucla extension, csula, csun, csu long beach. apply as a second bachelor's student.

thankss

does it matter where i go to take classes...because i would assume ucla classes are much harder than cal states...

i graduated from ucsd by the way.

and also, what other advices do you guys have for me to boost up my resume and application to apply to med school or smp

thanks

i graduated from ucsd too. i'm two years into postbac classes at a cal state. cal states are cheaper and if anyone asks why i took classes there instead of ucla i'm telling them that.

if you live close to ucla, ucla med school has a volunteer program. 80 hrs total, 4 hr/wk and you get a rec at the end. otherwise there's the clinical care extender program in van nuys and long beach. look into it.

hey cheezer,

thanks!!! yea i live near ucla, do you kno what that volunteer program is specifically called?
and also, would you mind sharing which cal state you are attending?

LECOM program is still taking applications. The classes are more graduate level classes but they are considered by amcas as undergraduate classes (will factor into gpa). This would kill multiple birds with one stone. If you do well, it'll raise your gpa. If you get 3.0 or above in the program for fall, you'll get an interview for spring (chance to start medical school in fall 09). If you do well overall, you improved your chances to medical school in general.

hey guys

so ive been talkin with some of my friends and they suggested
I apply to the MS in biology program at CSUN or CSLA, and not the extension programs since i already took all of the sciences classes. which means i need to take the GREs, apply for the spring semester by Oct 15th

Any comments or advice about this route?

thanksss

you need to bring up your undergrad gpa. taking grad courses won't help with that. are you sure there aren't any upper division science electives you could take? if you're considering DO schools as well, are there any classes you received a C or lower in that you could retake? just some food for thought

ya i definetely need to bring that undergrad GPA up. but i was told if i do well at this MS program then the med schools will bascially just look at my GPA from this program and i can just explain my undergrad gpa.

i was a biochemistry major at ucsd, so i took a lot of Upper division science courses as well, and did receive Cs or lower in some courses...
How should i go about Retaking the classes ? just thru the 2nd bachelors degree?

i don't know about getting a second bachelor's in your case but i would declare one if you need the financial aid.
1. Make a spreadsheet of your grades
2. Take more courses. Get your cumulative and science above 3.0
3. Take the MCAT, do well.
4. Apply to special masters programs.
5. Apply to med school

hey cheezer, sorry once again

but How do i go about raising my undergrad GPA???
do i take classes at a cal state nearby as a 2nd bachelor's degree? or is there some other option? thanks once agaIN!

yes. more A's in undergraduate science courses is the key.

if you are going to a masters program, it should be a special masters that has lots of medical classes. your performance at a special masters program is a better indicator of your performance in med school than a ms in bio because the curriculum in the smp is closer to medical school.

thanks hung, unfortunately, i did apply to SMP but i did not get into any of them. so the MS or a 2nd bacherlors is what im thinking and confused

You should try taking classes this year as a post-bacc studet at a college around you, then reapply for next year. Also, you should probably add other schools such as EVMS and Mississippi College.

thank you for all the information...

i was thinking, of taking re-taking some classes, especially G-chem and intro. biology clases, and maybe an UD class...(total of like 3 classes). at a City-college nearby (SMC or LACC) ... is this an efficient and wise decision? or am i completely wasting my time...

and for DO schools, would these classes i retake, will it replace my old grade ? or do nothign at all.

thanks

I am in the same boat.
I am also retaking some science classes, General chemistry, General biology, and an upper-level science course at a city college. My overall GPA is a 2.9 and my BCPM is also lower than a 3.0. I already applied to LECOM. They liked my MCAT but they advised me to retake some of my basic undergraduate classes and reapply next year(but darn it, their application cost $100). But finding out their classes count as undergraduate ones cheers me up, assuming I get in next year.🙂

I think taking classes at a city college can be beneficial, its cheaper and close to home(but you must make sure you ACE classes). Once you get your GPA to 3.0 a lot more options will be available to you (including SMP's)

For DO schools, I believe they replace your old score with a new one. But I think you have to indicate that its a retake.

Be very careful ablut community colleges, I am not sure if med schools treat them like 'real' colleges do.

yea true that

but it terms of DO schools? is it the same?

Tru tru. It's actually a state college.
