UNTHSC/TCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
6-8x/day my ass. You know you're sitting at the computer hitting refresh over and over and over for the duration of the day, stopping only to eat and sleep.

You will both match. I have spoken.

😳 Damn....get out of my head.

Once you guys start med school you will learn that the institution you attend has a minor influence on what residency you end up in. It is primarily up to you in terms getting the residency you want.

As far as DO discrimination, it only exists in a few specific residency programs around the country. As far as Texas residencies go, you will be golden.

Also, don't think that there aren't people who chose TCOM over UTSW, etc... it's not uncommon.

Good luck to all of you.

Did anyone go to TCOM's preview thing today? Any feedback you have would be great... thanks!!!

I went and it was absolutely great. They talked a little about osteopathic medicine, then they went on to talk about the school's expansion. It looks like by the beginning of the 2009 school year, the campus will almost double in size. They then talked about some international medicine oppurtunities in Kenya, and the history of Fort Worth. After lunch, we did sort of a mock class thing with Clinical Integration Lab. The school continues to impress and I really think that this is the school for me

If you don't mind me asking, what is it about SA that doesn't match up with TCOM from your perspective? Glad you had a good experience there.

I don't have a pre-match offer from SA, but I do fro TCOM. When I interviewed at SA, I didn't really learn a lot about the school. There wasn't really anything wrong about it, but nothing really stuck in my head as being great. At TCOM I feel like I know a lot more about what I'm getting myself into. I also live in Fort Worth right now.

My only hang up about TCOM is that I don't really know what I want to go into and they have a huge emphasis on primary care. I can't get an unbaised answer if this even matters. I'm also from the southeast and would maybe like to do a residency back there, and I don't know very much about if there is and DO/regional bias in that area.

Since there is a new DO school in GA, I'm hoping that there won't be much of a bias there.

When the time comes for you to apply to residency programs, I doubt geography will play a big role. You will look at the best programs for whatever you want to go into.

And nobody is going to force you to go into primary care, regardless of where you go.

Gerogia is an unknown enitity. I have plenty of 4th year friends who are applying to great programs in the Southeast, and they tell me there is no question in their minds they will get in. If you have seen the TCOM match lists, many (maybe even most) get into great programs and go on into fellowships.

Something needs to happen in this thread...even if it isn't to me. Universities close in 3.5 more days for the holidays...I'm not changing my underwear till either I hear something or quiting time on Friday. We'll see if there really is anything to any of this jock superstition stuff...

there's at reason they call it jock itch.

Wow...I want to send you an acceptance just to get the visual out of my head.

I got an MRSA (possible) abscess on my ass from going on a long bike ride and then spending the rest of the day working in my cycling shorts before I had a chance to shower that evening.

Maybe the no-underwear-changing thing could work in your favor. You could go to a TCOM-affiliated site for your MRSA abscess on your ass, and they could give you a prescription, and they might as well give you your acceptance while you're there...

I like your logic😀

One of my first rotations at LBJ as a physical therapist was cleaning festering butt wounds and scrotal absesses of TDC patients (prisoners). I'll never forget telling my prone skinhead patient to "just relax" while I jammed 1/4 in gauze into his buttcheek for 10 minutes.

He still sends flowers.

Too much gloom and doom going on here! Cheer up guys it is the holiday season... take your mind off the medical school thing for awhile! (I know this is easy for me to say!)

The students at TCOM seemed to have a website of their own with their own discussion forum as well, does anyone know how to log in, sign up???? I want to read the discussions they have on the website, I’m pretty sure there will be tons of info there…. I really want to start thinking about apartments and other stuff…..

I got into tcom i got into tcom, omigosh, i'm going to be a doctor!!! 🙂

best of luck to all of you, hopefully you will hear something tomorrow!

Congrats Mosel. 👍👍 Do you mind sharing some of your stats? I've got Feb 1 marked off on my calendar.

The TCOM website (Mr. Personality) still flatly saying: Your application is currently under review. Once a final decision is made on your application, we will notify you.

This stinks!!

Maybe they saw your username here, PT2MD, and figured you have no interest in being a DO.

Boy that'd be pretty cheap. 😎 I created the nickname before I knew anything about anything.

good luck to all the applicants and I look foward to meeting everyone next year. Enjoy your summer because you won't remember what a "break" means once you come here. But you will love it.

yeah I'm a current TCOM student. Our school in regards to stats is the top osteopathic school in the nation. We rank first in scores on the COMLEX and we have had a 97 percent pass rate on the USMLE for the past 3 years. In regards to top residency programs I don't have the exact percentage of people that land there top 3 but I do know its really high one of our TCOM grads is a current chief resident of internal med at john hopkins right now so we don't do to shabby in that department. I look into the exact numbers when I get back to school and get back to you. Oh and by the way... I 'm not a texas resident I'm from NY I'm going to TCOM because it houses the National Osteopathic Research Center, it is the Top Osteopathic Medical school in terms of stats, and cheap tuition both instate and out of state. If you have any qs just pm me.

Congratulations to all of those who are being accepted!!! I know it's an excited time,

I'M IN!!! PT2MD, check your status. Mine just changed this morning.

No changes yet. Congrats Doc!!

Looking forward to it Mosel! Sorry no news yet PT2MD. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for ya. I'm almost as anxious about some of you guys' acceptances as I was my own. It'd be really cool to meet up with all of my SDN friends during orientation. I hear there's a beer joint down there called the Ginger man or something along those lines...over 50 beers on draft!!! I'll buy the first pitcher, or if enough of you get in, two pitchers!

Thanks EEL! I believe I owe you some broken adcom arms. How big are they in AZ? Prolly not as big as your average Texan.😎

If you've already interviewed, I was told it takes about two weeks for your completed evals and app to make it to the adcom. Took a little over a month for me, but my app was held up for three weeks due to a lost LOR.

Mine has said that since July...sucks.

Crap!!! I saw your name as the last post and thought you might have gotten the call...

I got my packet yesterday. They've also already admitted me to the ROME program (rural medicine). I'm pretty stoked. Everything is in place.

It is one of my interest. Where do you intend to practice? I have a friend who is doing rural medicine and loves everything about it.
