UNTHSC/TCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So if I haven't heard yet does this mean that I'm not going to get in? 🙁

I mean my interview was only on Nov 29, so it was really really late...

i dunno, i interviewed the same day; i didn't find out until late december...

Mosel, are you a tex resident?

Also how does this match thing work. TCOM is the only school I applied to in the TMDSAS so does that mean that I either get TCOM or I don't?

oh yes, forgot to mention that, i am a tex resident, and that probably makes a difference as to when you will hear back. take a look on the tmdsas website, it tells you all about the match, also a big forum on it in the pre-allo forum. best of luck to you!!!

If you haven't heard anything yet, it doesn't mean you won't get in. It only means you weren't accepted in the pre-match period. The admissions seminar woman said that they give away a little under half of their spots during the pre-match. So, you've still got a good shot at hitting the match. You'll need to log onto the TMDSAS website and enter your match preference. Even if you only applied to TCOM, you'll still need to go rank them as your top choice. If they accept you, you'll find out on the TMDSAS website on Feb. 1.

That's good to know. Thanks and congratulations to those already accepted! Make sure you all have a happy and safe New Year celebration.

I officially say all us sdn'ers get together a day or two before orientation and have a serious BBQ dinner at Angelo's BBQ (one of my favorite Que joints in the state of texas, right behind Iron Works in Austin) complete with a couple tall ones - and it's only like 5 minutes from the campus! 👍

I'm there.

Hey guys. Just officially declined my TCOM acceptance. I really hope this helps one of you fine people not on this list get a match!

P.S. To DocRawk, congrats man. I'm really happy for you, ESPECIALLY considering that I just figured out that we interviewed together. You were an ultra nice guy who seemed to have a great head on his shoulders, so I pretty mich figured you'd be getting a spot there...

As for my identity, I'll give you a little hint Mr. Music Therapist... I'm was the guy who sat next to you at lunch whose mom went to TWU. 😀

Thanks man, it was my only shot, but it worked out. I'm guessing you're going A&M, right? Congrats to you too!

maybe. looking to match at ut-houston hopefully.

i don't know. i'm just not a dallas/fort worth guy. houston born and raised.

clutch city baby. 😀

Well, good luck with UTH! Honestly, I'm not much of a DFW guy either; I'm even less of a Houston guy. I chose TCOM for their strong rural medicine program. Soon as I'm done, I'm kissing the city goodbye. I'm ready for the slow life😀

Agree with this completely! I do like DFW for being a big city but just despise big cities in general. It is going to be a tough 4-8 depending on the location of my residency. I am definitely headed to small town America as soon as I possibly can!

Are you doing the rural curriculum? That's awesome, if you are! I heard there are usually only 10-15 of us per class.😎

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to say "Congratulations" on your acceptances. I'm currently a first year at TCOM and love it here. For those of you who are still waiting for your acceptances, don't worry or stress toooo much. I got in one week before orientation last year. It sucks. I know, but it was well worth the wait. If you guys have any questions, please feel free to PM me. I might not respond right away bc my internet at home is unreliable and we have an exam this Friday. I'll do my best!

If you're currently looking for a place to live, University Park condos is right by school and is affordable - alot of students live there. Some students live in duplexes near school. Some pricey apts near school are Amli and Firestone. You can keep an eye out for housing at the http://students.hsc.unt.edu/. Click "Housing Opportunities."

Random facts:
-Most students here attend classes, not mandatory except for some classes.
-Lectures are recorded, not videotaped.
-Curriculum - systems-based
-Professors - M.Ds, D.Os, Ph.Ds, Guest lecturers
-Parking is not a problem.
-Wait to buy books bc your big buddy might sell them to you for cheaper.

I personally like using most of the textbooks assigned. Some do, some don't. The only problem is sometimes you don't have enough time to read the assigned text on top of your ppts.

By the way, TCOM will push youuuuu... trust me.

Thanks for dropping in. I've heard many people say this "TCOM pushes you". How do you mean? That kind of fires me up because I'd definitely want a challenge. I appreciate any insight you can offer. Good luck on the exam.

Still rooting for ya PT2MD...just under a month till the match!!!

Thanks Doc. We'll see how it goes in February. I'll be in Florida that weekend, but I'll be checking my status regularly (read: constantly).

I'm sure all medical schools push you, but the vibe I receive from TCOM is that we are the underdogs out of all the other Texas medical schools. TCOM is considered one of the newer schools and they want to get their name out! The faculty and staff here are very hands-on in changing & managing the curriculum to make sure we are prepared for our boards and clinics. Trust me when I say, school comes first before big events/holidays. This year they implemented "Medical Informatics" and "Community Resources" into our first year curriculum ON TOP of OMM, Clinical Med, and the Current System. It may not seem like a lot, but the days are long. It's not like UTMB where we get out at noon on some days. Also, everyone must take the exact same courses. There is no placing out of Biochem or what not. A bunch of us joked around during our first 5-week "Cell Science" course saying how this class was pretty much our entire undergraduate degree in FIVE WEEKS. Now, some of us actually miss the "Cell Science" days bc we had free time. But it's NOT THAT BAD...you just have to study all the time so you don't fall behind. There have been 9 ppl that dropped out for various unknown reasons thus far (and it's only the first semester). However, what really makes my experience are the people in my class. MY class is not cutthroat, we share notes, and everyone is ACTUALLY friendly, mature, and out-going (I AM NOT SAYING THIS TO SAY THIS) I actually do like everyone in my class considering how for undergrad I could not say the same. Lastly, I think we are in school the longestttt. We go from the beginning of July to the end of June. A few upperclassmen have told me that what helped them out the most for boards was TCOM Systems-based curriculum. We take everything twice. For first years, we take GI 1, Renal 1, Cardio 1, Neuro 1, Pulmonary 1, Endocrine 1, etc... and then we take it all again second year (GI 2, Renal 2, etc..) with EVEN MORE clinical integration and pathology. Anyway, I know exactly what you guys are going through for those who are still waiting. Trust me, once you're in, the playing field is leveled. It doesn't matter what your stats were and the admissions people know that! You just have to have ENDURANCE, GREAT TIME-MANAGEMENT SKILLS, SELF-MOTIVATION, and BECOME USED TO THE LONELY/SOLITUDE/FRUSTRATED feelings when you're studying 8+ hours straight.

In the meantime, you can try to get your "File Reviewed" by going to the TCOM website. It might throw your name out again. Also, you can apply to the Master's program (Master in Medical Sciences - for pre-meds trying to get into medical school). My class had 20 or 25 students from that program

But the stress here honestly doesn't compare to the stress of not getting in or not knowing what the heck to do for another year. =D Good luck!

I know...LONG post but I love giving the 411. Anyway, back to studying a little while longer.

I'm freakin stoked!!! I wish it was July already...

Thanks for dropping in ms_taken. I heard you purchase a tablet pc or PDA when you enroll? Is this true and do you buy them directly from the school? Appreciate the insight.

i'm sorry, but seeing docrawk and pt2md's avatar's one atop the other makes me laugh every time. it's like looking in an inverse-color shifting mirror. ahhh!!!

That was a good catch. I didn't see it that way until you pointed it out. Now that you have, they are the same person in a parallel universe.

Tablet PC will be chosen for you and provided by the school. Your first year of financial aid will have been increased to cover the cost of it.

PDA will be required. They give you the specs, you choose the PDA or smartphone. They also give you the software you need.

Do any of your classmates work or have time to work on weekends? I was thinking about doing some prn physical therapy work during school which pays really well to offset some of my loans. I imagine it would be no more than 10 hours per week.

Add: If I'm fortunate enough to have a choice following the match on February 1st, is there anyway potential students can come up to TCOM for another look at the school and get a glimpse of what student life is like?

I appreciate the help.

Not entirely sure about this, but I think there is some kind of spring fling that we get invited to, wherein we get to revisit the school and stock up on TCOM gear.

I don't know anyone in my class who works. I cannot speak for everyone, but it would be tough to balance work, school, & studying. I added studying separately bc I feel studying is "your work-your 8 hr shift." Honestly, I would concentrate on PASSING first year. You wouldn't want to fail and remediate or even repeat. There are a few courses where you only take one exam (FOT & Heme). Trust me when I say, it's nerve-wrecking for everyone. What you may not know yet is that for every course you MIGHT have to readjust your learning style/groove of things. Each course has its own course director and multiple professors teaching the material. Thus, each professor has a different style of teaching and each course director may be more/less organized or helpful/not as helpful. For me, I have to study a lot to get the grades I want and I could not imagine having to give up another 10 hours to work. BUT everyone is different and some people may find things easier. SO FAR, I have not found TCOM to be extremely difficult to the point where I question my abilities. Instead, I'm just trying to balance everything so that I won't feel burnt out. It's a rollercoaster ride of endless studying, but the material is veryyyyy interesting! Spend your time having fun with your family and relaxxxxxxxx! That's what my friends in class told me to tell you guys on SDN.

Also, for the PDA, I haven't even used mine. They told us to use it here and there but we haven't had an exam where we had to navigate through the software. They would tell us to bring it to Clin Med sometimes, but a lot of people forget unless they have a PDA phone. However, it does help when you go on your preceptorship and want to look up drugs or diseases. Makes you look cool haha =D One more thing, everyone receives the same laptop with all the software included. ($2000.00 - from your tuition)

Let me know if you have anymore questions!

I only know of a few and they actually just pick up some shifts when they can, primarily on the weekends. I would say to get used to the schedule first and then think about whether or not you can work a couple of shifts here and there.

For me and others I know, you need to find out where you stand in your abilities first. Once you know what you can "get away with" in terms of spending time outside of class and studying with respect to grades, you'll be able to make a better decision.

There is the spring fling for sure. Other than that, you're probably more than welcome to come by and visit the school on your own. Maybe ask the admissions/registrar folks if there are any students who can take you on a personal tour, etc...

Thanks both of you for the good advice. I will hopefully get first-things-first by getting an acceptance.

I would really wait before you think about working on weekends. The second semester of the first year is much harder than the first. Wait until you hit MOD!! YOu will then develop a real love/hate relationship with the Robbins Path textbook.

Year II makes year I look like a walk in the park, but it is sooo much better. The material is much more interesting, although it is fast and furious.

Good luck to all of you.

Yes, Robbins..eeK... We read 4 chapters of Robbins our first semester already. 1 was assigned before school, 1 in Immuno, and 2 in Heme (and Heme is a 1 week 3 day course!) It took so damn long to read 10 pages and you have to read those 40-80 pg chapters TWICE to at least understand! How many chapters did you read for MOD? I remember seeing my friends during the summer with their WALL-sized disease/organism charts. =T

i dont think TCOM has any spots left for OOS...they seemed to hint at that when I called. 🙁

hey civil, think positively, at least you do have an acceptance already to medical school! many people don't even get that... 👍

but civil did you already give up your spot at Western?

TCOM Class of 2012 already has a facebookthat I just joined, if you got in and you're goin' go ahead and JOIN UP!!! 👍

Haven't heard anything yet, but to be quite honest.....IM FREAKING OUT ABOUT FEB. 1 !!!:scared:

but civil did you already give up your spot at Western?

I really did not like the place when I went there and I felt like the school was really subpar (no offense). If I applied in three or four years it would be great but I dont think I could get a competative allo residency going there. TCOM on the other hand was amazing. So yeah I figured that I have a high odds of more acceptances so I might as well gamble...

Does anyone who already knows they are going to TCOM c/o 2012 know where they are living yet?

Just wondering because i live here already and i could offer some suggestions if needed....

That makes sense to me. I actually didn't notice all the other interviews you have so I was worried that TCOM and Western were your only potential options. 😳 I hope everything works out just how you want it to! :luck:

I'm not sure if I'm going here yet, but I also live in Fort Worth and would probably move closer to the school if I go here.

A bunch of students say that they have cheap housing walking distance from the campus. Where? I don't know of any apartments right there and all the houses in those neighborhoods are ungodly expensive. Do you know where they are talking about?
