With an acceptance at hand, I decided I had nothing to lose to contact other schools to check app status (of which I hadn't received interviews or had any updates since app complete, and were my top choices)

I very politely informed them that I received an acceptance, but would still very much wish to check on the status of my application with their school

Penn replied me with:
Thank you for informing us of your change in plans and withdrawing your application. We wish you much success in the program of your choice.

uh.... No where did I state I wanted to withdraw my app?! Is it too late to unwithdraw an app once it happens?? wtf penn :scared:
should I even bother to correct this? i was app complete sept 2 so my chances at an interview regardless were pretty slim

That really sucks...but in an atmosphere of pure competitiveness they probably look for any "dis-interest" presented by applicants as even another weeding tool - even if it wasn't meant that way. I would call and tell them you are still interested in going there (if you really are).

Actually they probably thought you were withdrawing your app when you said you already got an acceptance somewhere. I'm guessing the admissions secretary was reading thousands of emails, saw the first couple of lines of your email, and assumed you wanted to withdraw from the school due to your acceptance. If you call them today, they can probably fix it.

Seems like a plausible scenario to me. +1 for calling them. The sooner the better!
