Hello, I have a question regarding the UOP supplementals:

One of the questions asks us to "
.provide an explanation of your activities during semesters or quarters where your course load was below 14 units."

I have had a couple of quarters in which my course load was at 13 units, but it was because the science and math courses I took those quarters were 4 units. So basically in the end, 2 courses of science and/or math along with a third non science course adds up to 13.

How exactly do I explain this without sounding...incompetent?

Has anyone been in the same situation? If so, how did you explain this?

.

I've had a 8 units qtr ( 😱 ) and a couple 12 unit qtrs. I explained that I had held a leadership position in an org and worked ~30 hrs week. I didn't really write more than a few sentences, which probably hurt me (didn't get in). It also didn't help that my application was turned in mid-october

i told the truth.

i just got out of the military (iraq) and needed time to readjust to civilian life and school life (i've been out of school 6 years), and that it took a semester to do so (community college)

but i also pointed out the trend that my work load became larger as time progressed, till i was doing 20 units a quarter which lead to me graduating in 3 years.

show the good and the bad, don't just list the bad.

just tell the truth, they'll understand.

I applied to UOP last year, got an early interview, and was accepted in November. I had maybe 4 semesters during which I took less than 14 units. During some of the semesters I also was taking a more difficult road (3 science classes), but I didn't address that at all. Instead I focused on explaining my extracurriculars (I had a lot), how much time they took, leadership roles, what they involved, etc. As someone said, all you can do is be honest. My first semester of college I took 13 units, and I explained that by simply saying I was still adjusting to college life.

May I ask how long your response was? 🙂

I wrote a paragraph for each semester, except the first semester of college which was just one sentence (adjusting to college life).

You can private message me if you have any other questions too. Good luck!

what does uop mean by 14 units? do they mean semester units or quater units

I applied last year and called them to ask them this. They want you to explain quarters or semester that you have taken less than 14 units. I was on the quarter system so I explained honestly why I took less than 14 units which was a lot of times since I had other extracurriculars. I was accepted in February so just be honest. The length of my essay was about a page but remember no matter what stay positive on your response!

is this essay (additional information) optional?
