Hi Smile 08,

I only applied to UOP.

Hi Yahoo31,

My stats are not that good, so, again, it's more about your resume than numbers. I have been working as a dental assistant and surgical assistant for the past 7 years (in US). I had 2 thesis written (in Brazil), since I have a master degree in Pediatric Dentistry. I did an Emergency Room internship (in Brazil) at the University Hospital for 1 year and I worked in Brazil in private practice for 4 years. I also taught Anatomy and Phisiology of the Head and Neck in a technical school before I came to the US. I got an excelent TOEFL score (115), but the rest was just average. I had 80 in my NBDE and thought a lot about re-taking it, but then I decided to apply to UOP just to see what happened...I guess they liked my experience and disregarded my low NBDE.

I am married, work full time, have 2 little kids. I really didn't have time to study a lot for the NBDE. But I took my chances and applied with a low score and, praise to God, got accepted.

Good luck to all of you still waiting. Don't lose hope! :)

:thumbup:Good post veejaeju!Very encouraging for people like us who are struggling here in there lower 80's .....it's not that we dont have the calibre for 90's but just that we have our own circumstances.......however hard i try sometimes it gets impossible to study with a 2 yr old...........ONLY GOD CAN HELP !:)

Hi Friends

I am so happy to post in this thread about my acceptance in UOP. I was completely surprised when Mrs. Pat King called to let me know about my acceptance. I was waitlisted and was feeling impatient since I didnt know how long to wait until I got the miracle call :) since we all know that we were told it would not be until January that we would know further.
I would like to congratulate everyone who got in and wish good luck to all who are waiting

hey guys...join the IDS Class of 2011 - UOP group at face book...lets get to know each other better

Thank you all so much for your kind words...This has been a long journey...I truly hope all foreign trained dentists can make it, because we all deserve a place under the sun. Never stop dreaming and don't let anyone put you down. You are a winner! You are of infinite worth! :)

Hi yahoo 31
I also do not have great stats...81/80/115 but schools like UOP do not just look at your scores. I have been doing observation and volunteer work for 2 yrs. I also did some volunteer work for a year at a hospital here that was non-dental. I took up some courses and attended some lectures. I have worked in my home country for 2 yrs. I think in the time you have since you graduated, they are looking for your activities and how involved you have been. Above all I think its God's grace and blessings of our elders that help us reach where we are. So good luck to all waiting...

What volunteer work did u do in the hospital? what lecture did u attend and what kind of courses did u do.??
Thanks in advance.

Hi
I joined a hospital as a volunteer. They have various departments where they need volunteers to come forward and help them and you can choose what you are comfortable doing. As for the courses, I attended some CE courses along with the dentist in whose office I go for observation and volunteer work. She was very kind to take me as her guest/friend. I am sure there must be other ways by which you can yourself register for such lectures. Find out from your county dental society if they are having any such opportunities. Also many schools offer CE courses. You can also check the ADA website...they have a lot of online CE courses.
Feel free to ask any more info that you need, I will try my best to help as much as I know of things. I know how it feels right now as all of us who got through have been through the same.
good luck:thumbup:

hi docstudent
congrats on your acceptance!!! I just wanted to ask you that how often should we observe in a dentist's office.....i mean i am observing in a clinic rt now but sometimes i ave this feeling of vagueness that whats the fun just standing there and eating the dentist's head .....this dentist where i go is a specialist and i feel he does the same thing everyday so how long do you think should one observe so that it looks good on resume?
Hope you get what i am trying to say....thanks in advance?
And one more thing are online CE courses worth doing?

good question godknows! I had the same problem...I felt so stupid sometimes jsut STANDING there behind the dentist sometimes 'pretending' to look (you can only see SO much of cavity prep everyday) but really i would come home and feel like crap because I felt like it should be ME doing stuff like that, not standing behind a dentist.
The most I got to do was suction (believe me, that was the highlight of my day)
At the end of it all when I asked the dentist to give me a rec letter, he made me write one myself and he just signed it...so i really dont know what people mean by get a 'killer' rec letter....what does that mean? should it mention what a great observer I am? i dont know....anybody have any advice? PM's welcome.

Hi Elderwand,

I too havent heard anything from them yet, so I am assuming all seats are taken as of now. Its so frustrating to keep waiting. Did you try calling up the IDS office and find out whats happening?

yup..it looks like all the seats r filled as of now....or they would have called next ones last week....I did'nt call them though...did U ?

I too haven't called up in a while, in any case even after calling we arent going to know where we stand, so its back to waiting endlessly.....:(
