UOP Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Here is what I am looking for!

I took a huge break from SDN after my DATs as I was hounding this site months and months up until my test.
First congrats to everyone. I recognize a few names. Last I remember Peerless couldn’t make up his mind between UOP and UCSF 🙂 . UOP was/is my top choice, so I hope to meet you all when DS starts.

Haha until I have that luxury of making that choice, my destination seems pretty clear at this moment. PACFIC TIGER, ROAARRR lol sorry my nerdy side is coming out. 😀

that's ok. good luck at UNLV, there definitely are a lot of married people with kids there it seems. The more single hotties at uop the better. haha jk.

omg..really..more single hotties at uop than ucsf?

well it's just my opinion of course but the first time i visited UOP i started calling it the dental school for hotties. 😉

Got my acceptance call about a week ago 🙂 Now the hard part is making a decision?!? Anyone have good advice for UCLA vs UoP? And CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who has received acceptances!

congrat to ya!! UOP is awesome!! Come!!

Hey everyone,
I have a dilemma...I was accepted at both UoP and Louisville, my top 2. I know going to UoP should be a no brainer but I'm worried about all the debt I'm going to accrue. Louisville would be much cheaper but UoP would be a year shorter...any advice?

I had the same exact dilemma with UoP and UNLV. Not only is tuition a lot cheaper at UNLV, but the cost of living is no contest (A mortgage in Vegas=<$500. 2 bd apt in SF=$2,300.) For me with a family, it just made a lot more sense to go to Vegas. It's ultimately all your decision but that was my reasoning in choosing UNLV over UoP.

I got my acceptance call yesterday!! I am 99% sure I'm going to UoP but GBrando is right.. UNLV is so much cheaper. It will be a hard decision to make.

Yea I am having a really hard time making my decision.

I got accepted to my state school which is 120K cheaper than Pacific overall (tuition and living expenses). I have no idea what I am going to do....

I love Pacific, but I dont want to be poor forever!

No offense but if you actually believe that you'll be poor forever you should do a little research...Private school are definitely more expensive, but they're hardly "poor forever" status. Not to mention the various schools have statistics like "how long will it take me to pay this off?" If you're honestly having a tough time deciding, getting your hands on some actual facts might be a good place to start.

I was exaggerating when i said "poor forever". I feel like I have done lots of research on tuition and have spoken to many grads of UOP regarding their repayment status. According to UOP (at my interview), it takes graduates about 10-12 years to pay off their loans. I currently have about 80K in undergraduate loans, so this also factors into my decision. I realize that all dental schools are expensive, but I am just afraid that I will be struggling a lot when I first graduate dental school.

I was exaggerating when i said "poor forever".

I've always found when I am looking for opinions and advice that exaggerating tends to be counterproductive. But hey you've done your research so good luck with your decision.

i have an interview jan 7th....im assuming for a seat, not waitlist...my question is....should i put a deposit down on my backup school due jan 15th?

it would be a gamble NOT to....but it would be nice to save that 1000 bucks. what would you do?

Though it is likely you will get a seat, I don't think you can assume acceptance to UoP at this point. $1000 is chump change in the long run. Your best bet would be to go to the UoP interview, get a feel for your chances, and, if you don't hear from UoP by January 12th/13th, send your deposit to your sure thing school. It is better to lose $1000 than it would be to go through the application process again.

Put it down to be on the safe side. Even though the chance of you being admitted is looking positive but there is no guarantee that you'll get admitted.

For people sending in the deposit, is a personal check okay? I know at some schools it can't be a personal check.

that's what I did and it worked. See you there.

Does anyone know if they are still giving out interviews for class spots at this point? Or only the alternate spots interviews are left?
Thanks.

I wrote University of the Pacific School of Dentistry.

Hum...I think they interview till 2nd week of March as far as alternate spots go. At least that's what they did last year. I am not too sure about this year though.

How long did you have to wait to hear back from them. I just had my interview and she said 10 days. I love UoP!

Ya you'll hear back within 10 days. Did you interview for a waitlist or the actual spot?

If I get onto the waitlist this year, do that give me a really good shot of getting in next year?

Ackk!! Waitlist interview, and this sounds like a crazy awesome school! Does anyone know how many people they usually take from the waitlist? I'd guess it would be less and less each year as competition increases....

Interview: 2/1. Notified of acceptance: 2/10. GL!

I had mine on 2/11. I felt great after my interview. Today is 10 business days after. Does anyone know what time they called you at?? I'm so snxious to hear. Do they call you even if you are waitlisted/rejected?

Good luck to you guys I saw amazing stuff at UoP!

Yes, REALLY REALLY GOOD SHOT, still....no guarantee though

It's 90% probable that you will get in the next cycle (that is what they told us at the interview)

Hi, I don't post often. I got my acceptance today. Wooohooo.. Class of 2013 Baby! I interviewed on Feb 8th. Good luck to those still waiting.

Congrats man!! See you in July!! If you're going there.

Any news for UOP alternate list interviewees? I interviewed on Feb 22nd.

I got a call today saying I've been recommended as an alternate. I was told UoP will send a letter and you have to return it with a $200 refundable deposit to be placed on the waitlist. In April, after 2nd deposits come in (from people who already put in a deposit for the class), they will rank the list. STRESSFUL!

Anyone know how many alternate spots they give out generally? I got placed on it as well.

I got the call too. Same info. Assuming we won't hear anything until mid-April

Same here. Waitlist. Interviewing for it tomorrow since they didn't get my app until 2 weeks ago. Hope to see you all at school!

I hear 10-15 get off the waitlist from around 30 applicants.

That sounds about right, but i'm thinking the list is more like 40 people because... last year no more than a dozen made it (told this during orientation). Then the student I interviewed with told me he got in off the waitlist 2 years ago and he was told he was in the "top quartile" as far as ranking went. He said if you get into the top quartile you'll most likely get in.

Hey guys,

In the interview folder we got a sheet of paper that says where to send transcripts when we're accepted. When are you planning on sending them? When the official word comes out that we get a spot? Or now?

Does anyone know when the alternate list people might start hearing from UOP? When do they meet to review alternate list peeps? Is there some kind of a date after which they start reviewing alternate list applications?

To answer sassykat's question: I would wait until you are actually accepted... not waitlisted.

When Tori (check spelling) called me, she told me that once they receive all the mailed letters back for the alternate list, the admissions committee will reassess all the waitlist applicants in April to rank them. They're unable to tell you your ranking but said that if we called them in late April to ask, they might be able to tell you what your "chances" are of getting in.

Does that mean that we will not hear anything from them until they rank the list (mid-April)?

Is anyone else going to Pacific Pride Day? I'll be visiting from NY for a few days around then if ne1 wants to show me around (waitlisted).

is going to pacific pride day worth it?

Pride day's schedule will be like this:

Breakfast, admissions presentaton, sim lab demonstration, lunch with deans, school tour, studnet Q&A session, then closing remarks. Not many accecpted students will show up. There are going to be mostly people who haven't applied but is interested in applying there.

I mean depends on what you mean by will the tour be WORTH GOING. That depends on what you are looking to get out of this event. I mean if you have never seen UOP then it's definitely a great tour to go. I def saw a lot more of the school then I did during my actual interview. If you're trying to talk to admissions to increase your chance off the waitlist, then I don't think it'll be worth it. I mean....I was there last year and EVERYBODY was trying to talk to Dr. Yarbrough and Dean Ferillo to get their faces recognize. So ya....you guys make the call.

i'm a little confused. when i spoke to tori a few wks ago, she said that we should call back end of april to see what quartile we're ranked in. then i called today & spoke to dan & he said that we don't need to call b/c they will be calling us once spots start opening up to tell us what quartile we're ranked in. but if spots r opening up, wouldn't they be calling us to offer an acceptance than to tell us where on the waitlist we r? someone pls clear this up for me. thanks!
