UOP Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
there are no exact dates. Also, I dont know if theres a 'Dan' there. You might be confused with Stan Constantino.

lol. i swear i heard "dan" b/c i was looking for kathy or stan..

i'm a little confused. when i spoke to tori a few wks ago, she said that we should call back end of april to see what quartile we're ranked in. then i called today & spoke to dan & he said that we don't need to call b/c they will be calling us once spots start opening up to tell us what quartile we're ranked in. but if spots r opening up, wouldn't they be calling us to offer an acceptance than to tell us where on the waitlist we r? someone pls clear this up for me. thanks!

I was on the alternate list like Mid March and got the call for an acceptance last week. Not sure if I was ever ranked into any groups but I know that is what they'll be doing. I believe there will be 4 groups and as spots open, they will start to call people from the list.

whoaaa. u were only on the waitlist for a wk? that's amazing! i was under the impression their classes had been filled for a while now.

was ur spot for an alternate position? i interviewed on feb 11 for a waitlist position & got the call mid march that i made the list. they said i wouldn't know where i'm ranked until end of april.

I think if you REALLY nail the interview and Pacific loves you, you won't even get on the waitlist. Don't forget, schools usually over accecpt students ANYWAY anticipating the number of students who will choose other schools later on. I think 2 of the people in my March interview group got in a week later after the interview. Don't lose hope guys, 5 out of 9 people in my group last year ALL got in last year. You guys still have a good shot.

i called the office today to check if my deposit for the waitlist has been received. i was told they aren't even ranking the waitlist for a couple weeks, so sit tight!

Dan Tran? Did we meet at NYU? What's your fb?

Probably, I was there in late October. Were you there?

...and as for UOP, I called today and Im in the 1st quartile waitlist. Crossin my fingers.

congrats! so i'm guessing u were in the 1st quartile? would u mind sharing ur stats?

i called today & it looks like i won't be going to pacific this yr. i'm in the 3rd quartile. 🙁. still hoping for movement on the indiana & nyu waitlist (yes, i'm on 3 waitlists this yr (2 being waitlist interviews) & no acceptances. lol.). peerless, what recommendations did they give u last yr since u didn't get off the waitlist? did u have to interview again? during my interview, kathy said we have a 98% chance of getting in next yr if we get on the waitlist, then when i spoke to stan, he said we "pretty much have a 100% chance" of getting in the next cycle. sounds like a guarantee to me, but i'm sure that's not the case. anyone know?

Hey, I was told by Kathy last year that as long as you follow the instructions that WILL appear on a letter UOP sends you later on when they finalize their class, you'll be set. They will call you and say the class of 201x is full, would you like to be on the waitlist still.

The letter usually rec people to take Anatomy, physio, microbio, biochem, and histology if you haven't done so. If you have one or more sections on the DAT that's below what Pacific normally looks at (16 or 15,) then there's a possibility UOP might ask you to retake the DAT and get a higher score on those sections, and the 3rd possible action is Pacific asking you to retake classes.

I was only asked to take the fav 5 classes, which I already took 4/5 classes back than and I couldn't find histology class anyhwere in San Diego, so that wasn't a big deal to them.

Here is the thing though, I know some of you will be thinking....there are a crap load of people on the list now, would UOP REALLY take everyone the following cycle? Look at this way, even though they might have 50+ students on the alternate list right now, but they should take about 10-17 students (sometimes more) this year and the half of the rest of the students will choose to go somewhere else instead of waiting for Pacific during that 1 extra year. The rest either didn't get into a dental school or he/she is a Pacific Craze like myself and choose to decline other offers and wait (Rarely happens.)

So in the end, there should be about 14-20 people left the following cycle. Even then some people will choose to go to OTHER California schools like the UCLA or UCSF or their home state schools the following cycle instead of going to Pacific. So when people say it sounds ridiculus for UOP to take EVERYONE off the waitlist from the previous year, that's never been an issue at the school. If you really like UOP and the pirice is not an issue for you, then I STRONGLY recommend you to wait that one year. Trust me, taking that 1 year off to rest your mind really is what you need. I am feeling better than ever and just can't wait to start school! Oh...and NO, I didn't get interview this cycle.

thank u so much! that was really helpful.

i hope i'm in pretty good shape & all i have to do is reapply. i've taken all 5 of those classes... 4 of which i've taken twice b/c i took them both at the undergrad & graduate level in my master's program (of greater intensity, of course. lol.) i really hope they don't tell me to retake my DATs. :xf:. i got a 15 in QR, but 20+ in the rest of the sections. maybe this yr will be diff & they will exhaust the whole waitlist. 🙄. wishful thinking, i know.

torri called me today. see you guys in july =)

congrats. must feel great. u son of a gun

there's hope for all of us.. HAIL

I withdrew my application about an hour ago. Good luck everyone!!

nartnad: probably got my spot!!🙂 good luck to you!

1st quartile! eeek i hope i make it! 🙂

anyone know if we're supposed to be doing anything in the meantime about financial aid, etc? i did my fafsa a while ago but i don't know if we're supposed to be preparing other stuff just in case we do get in.

I'm in! Here's hoping to win the housing lottery.

Congrats Mirthfull see you in July!! If you won't mind sharing, do you know what number you are in the quartile?

I made it today too!
However, I'm having a hard time deciding between Pitt and UoP. 🙁

congrats, but im not really sure what the dilemma would be. from the interview, pitt looks like a solid program, and I like that you get an anesthesiology certificate, but I definitely wouldnt pick it over uop. Doesnt seem as diverse, weather is cold, older facilities, and its 4 years. plus, flights from CA cost A LOT for some reason (about double the cost from CA-->NY), which makes its harder to visit home....my 2 cents*

but to be fair, its a lot cheaper (if my memory is correct)

Just withdrew my application yesterday. One lucky person should be getting a call real soon. 🙂

The dental program at UoP is great, but the university itself is less internationally recognized than Pitt (probably cuz lack of its own medical school).
And I don't like the quarter system. Going to dental school is hard enough, studying 4 quarters a year is going to make life even less enjoyable (2X the number of exams each year:scared:).

Pacific's program is definitely challenging... Pitt DOES have a very solid program. Honestly, there is no wrong choice here. At Pitt, you will save money and receive a great education. At UOP, you will save time and receive a great education. Now it is up to you to decide 😀

Is that really a big deal to you? Internationally recognized after you graduate? Let me share you my experience being oversea in Asia. My country doesn't really know that much about the dental schools in the US except for UCLA, UCSF, Boston, NYU, & Tufts. The reason being we have 1 or more dentists who went to those schools for the international classes and came back to Taiwan to practice.

So....when they come back to practice, people automatically assume those are the BEST dental school in the US. Being that it's REALLY tough to get into IDS classes and those were some of the best students academically who applied there. VERY VERY little number of dentists here have heard of Pacific. The ones that have heard the name or visited school all told me "congrats, I've visited the school, it's one of the best schools I've been to." So ya, "internationally recognize?" I think that's crap statement (sorry if that offended you, my apology) It's more about who's been to where for schools and the lack of knowledge of schools' culture oversea if you want to talk about the international fame. Just my thoughts, no means to disrespect your opinion, please don't get offended.

Quarter system, ya it is difficult but don't forget UOP gets ONE SOLID month off every summer, 7-9 days off after each quarter. Don't know if you know anything about other schools but some 4 yr programs don't even give their students a single summer off. So I STILL consider myself lucky.

It just sucks that unlike some of the other schools, we don't get that 3-4 months off during the summer of our 1st or 2nd year to study for the boards. So if you wanna specialize, then it's that much tougher being a 3 yr quarter system school. Pitts, I can't really say anything about the school cause I've never visited the school, I didn't even go to my interview for the school; but I've heard good things about the school. Either way, you'll be in good hands. Good luck choosing if you don't mind living in the snow for Pitts.

Anyone else hear back about the housing lottery? I got a place in Presidio but i'm very worried about how inconvenient it is. Anyone have any insight into this?

I got the Pacific housing!!! And it shouldn't be that bad. I have couple friends they live/lived in Presidio. They tole me all you gotta do is to drive or walk to the nearest safeway and there's a bus that'll take you to the school.

I just got into the Presidio also and Ive heard it isnt that inconvenient. Should be a good time!

Is anyone else waiting to hear about getting off the wait list?? I'm really bummed that I missed any chance of being in the housing lottery +___+ I at least hope Pacific takes me for July! 🙂

Also, is there a 2013 facebook group? I haven't been able to find it - but I definitely want to be able to start looking for ppl to share an apartment with soon! This was suggested as a good way to go about doing that.

3rd year applicant to uop, on waitlist (not 1st quartile 🙁). Does anyone know if they are still accepting students? Do i have a chance for this year? 😕:xf:

well what are your stats? it seems unusual that you still have not gotten into dental school after 3 years of applying.

You'll still have a shot on May 15th I think. That's the date where all dental schools need to finalize their classes and send the name list to ADEA...is it ADEA or the ADA? Oh well, one of those organizations. After that, I'll have to say prepare yourself to call the admissions and discuss your PLAN for the future after you receive an official letter from Pacific saying the class is full.

Hi,
Did you get the $2000 deposit back? I just got accepted off the waitlist and am planning to withdraw my acceptance. It would be nice if I can get 2k back.
