I am a Senior in high school, 17 years old
Just got acceptance letters from University of Pacific 5 year dds program and University of Detroit Mercy 7 year bs/dds program

my question is where to go if I am aiming to specialize

Things in consideration-
-Ability to specialize preferably oral surgery
-Experience
-Stress levels
-Cost
-Area
-Will my age affect anything

Thanks for the replys 😕

Add up the total cost of attendance. Go where it is cheaper. Specialization chances are the same at either school. 17 years old makes no difference at all, other than it isn't really possible for you to have any experience at this point.

wow you're willing to give 2 extra years of your life to live in detroit of all places?

you can save two years and live in a nicer location.
no question here.

UOP's dental campus, which is located in SF is awesome. But UOP's main campus Stockton is blahhh..... But to answer OP's question, UOP hands down. And OP, you're not even in college so don't make yourself look like an imposter by claiming you're a dental student. Congrats nonetheless on your accomplishments.

Congrats on the awesome opportunities! UoP does sound like a really nice deal here but it is really up to you.

Whatever you do, don't pay attention to UDM H8R when he starts going on and on and on lol.

Both schools should be good for getting in to specialties. Pick the school you like the best! The one you think will help you along and allow you to succeed! No one else will be able to feel this out better than yourself. Go with your gut!

Wow, valuable advice, VT! No, really! Earth shattering! "Follow your gut" ... cuz that's based on sound indicators of a program's success! "Both schools should be good for getting into specialties." Really? Gee, Thanks for your vast knowledge as ... a PRE-DENT!!! "Pick the school you like the best" WOW, now that's not common sense! I've never heard that before!

Anyway, congrats to OP for getting into the 5 year Pacific program. When I interviewed there, several students were in that program! No question that I would do that if I had a choice. My best advice, get out of dental school ASAP! Do 3 years instead of 4! No sense in staying in dental school longer than you have to. Take UDMSD's program and then cut out all the crap ... what you end up with is Pacific!

At my undergrad, Pacific had a tremendous reputation. I chose UDMSD for various reasons. I can't speak for how well students like Pacific, but pre-dents at my undergrad loved it and students at UDMSD don't even like UDMSD. If I had it to do over again, I would go to Pacific without hesitation!

nice job getting into those programs! im actually in the seven year dental program at udm. i am not familiar with the 5 year thing at UOP but i can tell you about the program i am in...two years ago it was a 6 year program then the year i applied they changed it to a 7 year BS/DDS program. i am a member of the first class to go through this program and know all the people who went through the six year program. As nice as it would be to save a year in undergrad i feel more prepared for dental school with the extra classes i am taking. entering dental school after just 2 years of schooling was "leavin students under prepared/stressed' according to a UDM rep from the dental school...there are only so many classes you can get in after only two years, much less one! im sure that UOP would do a great job of preparing you but i see this extra year or two of undergrad in my program really preparing me while still saving me a year off the traditional route. just something to think about...oh and the science faculty at UDM is SWEET!! you would definitely like them - all my science teachers know me by name and are very willing to take the time to meet with you whenever.

I also just got into UOP's 5 year dental program but am having hesitations deciding to go there. First, I didn't get a packet detailing everything about the program. Did u? Secondly, I called them and spoke to the counselor about it. She said that not only are you only guaranteed an interview (not an acceptance), you still have to apply to UOP, just as you would to other dental schools. In order to remain in the program, you have to maintain a 3.6 GPA! You also have to do really well on the DAT, i forget the numbers but i remember they were high, and get lor and all that gay stuff. So, overall, i don't see much beneifit of going here.

Did you ask how many of the 5 year people don't get in? Remember, an interview at UoP (pre-Dec 1, which you will get) is effectively an acceptance. UoP 5 year program means you're a BAMF. Congrats!

I didnt ask how many of the 5 year people dont get in. Do you have any evidence that an interview is like an acceptance? What does BAMF mean? lol. Thanks for the congrats, but it just seems to me like this program is not all that advantageous. I mean, maintaining a GPA of 3.6 and killing the DATs will effectively get one into any dental school. Also, i thought that i was gauranteed an interview without having to apply, get lor, and all that stuff. If i am going to have to do that anyway, i dont see how this program is any better than simply doing the trad route. Perhaps, Ryan, you can offer a different spin on this. -Jon

the advantage of this is that you will be done with everything (and making money) a lot sooner than the rest of us who took the traditional path

also, the application process is getting more and more competitive every year... I would say it's better to use this opportunity rather than taking more of a chance after you're done with college

...i wish i had known about these types of programs in high school. good luck

Well if you ask the admissions office (at the dental school), they'll tell you 99% of all pre-dec interviews get acceptances. You can google BAMF.

Theadvantage of the 5 year program, is that you finish dental school in 5 years instead of 8. With a 3.6 gpa and a 19 DAT (The DAT requirement IIRC) might do okay for you for some dental schools, but you'll still be 3 years behind a UoP 2+3. Getting LOR shouldn't be that hard, and a 3.6 isn't too stringent of a requirement to hold on to for 2 years.

Tell me, is it worth 2 years of your professional life (Average salary of a general dentist being ~200k/year) to not have to worry about getting letters of rec?

I suppose you're right...I am one B.A.M.F! lol. You make some good points. The cost is pretty incredible though. I'm going to wait on Buffalo before i make my final choice.

Ya'll just crack me up. yeah you should definitely look at price, but also think about the accelerated pace of living/ constant hell that you will experience over the next 5 years if you do the 3+2 at UoP. You may want to enjoy your time in college more and get a the "full" experience. My current roommate walked out of high school with 60 + A.P. credits, maintains a 4.00 and will probably score 40+ on the MCAT, like both of his older brothers, yet he is enjoying his time doing 4 years here at wheaton college AND he's considering taking time off (to be a medic in the special forces) before settling down to a serious career in medicine.

but if ya want, just go be all uber ninja about being a dentist before you're 23...it's probably what i would have done if given the chance...😉

Oistrakh, do you happen to remember if UOP sent you some detailed info about the 5 year program? All i got was an acceptance letter saying i got into the program, but nothing in writing as to what the program entails...

I am kinda upset that they dont take this seriously. I mean, do they expect me to just accept without knowing what im getting myself into? They didnt send me any info about the program and I have tried to call them for the past couple days and they just keep transfering me over and then tell me the person i need to talk to is out...Frustration.

hey to answer your thing
they sent me a huge letter saying i got into the 5 year program then a business card for the director of admissions and all the ways i can reserve my spot
we called them up for all the info about the program
i dont think i am going to do it though because it is a stressfull thing having dental school in three years
i have to make my choice soon
good luck to you alls and thanks

Do you want to be a dentist in 5 or 7 years? I think the answer is pretty obvious here

UDM has one of the MOST expensive undergrad programs in the nation. I am not kidding 1 semester of 15 credits at UDM as an undergrad will cost you about 11k.

I honestly don't see any advantage UDM over UOP

Can you tell me exactly what they told you? I called the office there but nobody seems to know any specific information. I mean, how am i supposed to know this thing is for real? They just sent me a letter saying congrats and that's it. I understand i get a guaranteed interview, but what if i don't get in the dental school? These and other unanswered questions deter me from this program. Also, the fact that it's in cali (a very bad part of cali, no less) and i'm in new york doesn't help the matter.

you did not mention the UOP 5yr program will grant you BS degree.
If they don't it may affect yuor chance to go into 6yr MD OS programs because they will require the BS dgree.

May is the key word. We had a guy who did the 5 year and though he mainly focused on 4 year schools, he did interview at a number of 6 year programs who had no problem with his lack of undergrad degree.
