Hi everyone! I have a quick question concerning update letters...

I plan on applying to the Texas dental school mid-May since obviously the earlier the better. I am also taking summer courses June-August and I plan on submitting an update letter once I complete those. My question is how seriously will schools consider transcripts in update letters? I have heard for the fall/spring after you apply they just look to see that you didn't fail but since the summer transcript is completed before interviews I didn't know if it would be treated differently.

Thank you I'm advanced!

(PS I find these forums much more helpful than my advisor...)

Before this cycle started, I spoke with Dr. Segura (UTHSCSA) and she said that if you want your summer grades to be taking into consideration, do not submit until you have completed those classes. I asked her again wouldn't I just be able to update when I complete the summer session, and she repeated by saying if you want those grades considered do not submit until you have completed those classes.

I followed that advice this cycle and didn't apply till I finished, which was aug 18th. I interview there on monday. My advice is if you really need those grades to boost GPA, don't submit till they are finished.

edit: I just noticed that you location is Indiana. You sure you want to be applying to Texas schools? You better have a really amazing application or you're wasting money.

Yeah dude. Last year, of all of the Texas dental schools, 2 applicants were admitted from OOS. The 2 applicants that got in both had strong tights to TX ... and PhD's.

I'm in the same boat as OP. When should summer grades be updated to the TX schools if the application was submitted before taking them? Do it with the fall update, or at the end of the summer?

She said they will only take a look at one academic update, which would be after the fall. Summer grades won't be taken into consideration for an interview, unless you submit after they are completed.

Post interview, they will take a look at your application and updated grades for consideration of acceptance.

I was shocked that it happens this way BTW.

I am actually a Texas resident but I went to school out of state

Thank you so much for your response! I noticed you said they only look at the fall update for consideration of acceptance... Does that mean that they will take into account those summer/fall grades for acceptance? Because I am being told that senior year grades don't matter unless you fail and in that case they will revoke your acceptance.
