If I'm being considered by a school and haven't yet heard from them, and if I'm ready to send a meaningful/beneficial update letter, should I send it right away (i.e. while they're reviewing me)? Or, do I wait, allow them to review me (and possibly not get an interview or be put an hold... but assume that it's a school that *doesn't* hand out rolling rejections) and send the update letter so that they conduct a second review of my application?

I've always heard that the more times your application is looked at, the better. But is it better to immediately give them everything that can possibly help you, from early on?

Thanks.

I've heard different things, but I talked to someone who used to be on an admissions committee who said to update them at the interview, and if something comes up after that, send them an update letter. Don't send anything before you've interviewed, even if you're on hold. That is, of course, only one person's opinion. Some schools specifically say to update them if you have something new though, so it's probably fine.

I'd send the letter immediately. Make sure it's articulate and professional, and there's no way it can hurt you. I don't see the rationale behind waiting to make yourself a more qualified candidate. You want all the positive information available in the adcoms' hands NOW.

There are 2 types of letter you can send to Medschool
1) Update letter
2) Letter of Intent

Update letter can be sent before or after interview/waitlisted, You want to update them with new info that will help you chances and get you an interview or off a waitlist.
Letter of Intent is more for being on the waitlist and you really want to go there and you matriculate if accepted.

I would hold off with an Update letter until you do alot of good stuff or even Fall grades, I sent mind in Jan since I havent heard anything back and got did a bunch of stuff in the fall. I didnt even get an interview until Feb. But if you think they will reject you then feel free to send it in.. its up to you
