I'm not sure if this was already discussed somewhere, I can't seem to find it. I know there are quite a few for a letter of intent, but not for an update. How would you go about writing one? Is it brief highlighting the things that you want adcoms to know, or is it what you did, followed by an explanation of it. And is this letter addressed to the dean of admissions? Or to the office to add to your file?

Help.

Thanks. 🙂

I sent mine to the Admissions Committee and tried to keep it short, so that they would actually read it. It was probably like 3/4 page. I just told them a little bit about a new activity that I have started, updated them on my visa status (foreign student), and told them that they would receive a new letter of recommendation from my new job/research supervisor. I ended it by saying that I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to reaffirm my interest in their school... or something like that...

If I were you, I would wait until the end of the semester though. That way, you can send your grades for the Fall semester as well (assuming you are still in school, of course).

Hope this helps! :luck:

yup, that's what I was planning. but i really wanted to include some of the stuff that i've been doing, and am going to do.

thanks for the help.

😀

when we send an update for our semester grades, do we include an official copy of our transcript or do we just have our school send that directly while we send an update letter separately?

I wrote an update letter a few months back, but the express purpose was to update with a new job. If there is something significant that has changed, I would suggest writing what has changed and perhaps briefly indicate why this changed (ie training to make you a better physician in the future). I sent it to the admissions committee to add to my file.

And the OP mentioned that there is a lot of info on letters of intent. I wish to write one of these and would like to know where I can find that information? Which threads? Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about sending any official copies of your transcript yet. I think if you enclose an "unofficial" print out, that should be sufficient. If you are accepted that's when they'll want all of the official stuff anyway. Besides, if you wait for an official copy to be sent they might not even get it till you graduate! My undergrad wasn't too efficient about those kinds of things...
