I am applying this cycle as a rising senior and I have already submitted my primary and some of my secondaries. My lab submitted a manuscript for publication this week after some revisions. I did not mention this at all in my primary or in the secondaries that I have already finished. This would be my first publication after 3 years of work in this lab so I would really like to include it. I am just unsure about the best way to add it. Should I send updates now or wait until it is accepted for publication? Also, should I include it on secondaries that I am submitting within these next two weeks or wait until it is accepted as well?

Thanks,

Include it on your new secondaries, but for the ones you've already submitted, there's really nothing new to tell them...
Save it for a update when you 'nudge' them for an interview.

Submitted = not published

"Published" or "in press" is worth notifying.

Do you really think that the Dean of Admissions at @LizzyM's or @gyngyn's school is going to rush up to them and say "we've got to admit this kid; s/he's just submitted a paper!!" ???

LOL. As if!

This is useful, as mentioned, once it has been accepted to use as an "update" to your file either before you are offered an interview or even afterward as a way of signalling that you are still interested.
