I am submitting my application before spring grades come out. Is it true that I might have to update schools with my grades? do I have to do this, like at interviews?

If a school wants to be updated they might ask. Or after an interview if you are waitlisted and such you can update them. If you are worried about your spring grades wait. If not then no need to worry.

when are the grades supposed to come out? if it's around mid june and you expect to get good grades that would increase your GPA your best bet is to wait. some schools will only look at updates if they like your initial application so it's a good idea to put your best foot forward

I'm in the same pickle as you. My GPA is rather high (3.9+), so doing well this term won't help me out that much, but screwing up one class will drop my gpa. That being said, I'm not doing so well in one of my classes right now, and since grades won't come out till late June anyway, I'm just gonna go ahead and submit my app before then. I have 8 solid quarters of school completed, so I'm pretty sure it's safe to extrapolate and say I'll do pretty well during my 9th quarter. However, I have emailed some schools and asked if it is OK to submit my app early and then update them later with grades. Most of them said yes, some said "we don't really care about your spring grades that much," so it's a variable response. I'd say go ahead and submit now, then email your schools when your grades come out to see if they want you to update them.

The point is that I don't want to update them. My gpa is high enough as it is. Keeping a 3.9+ gpa is very hard.

Well is your gpa going to drop after this term or something? If it's not, then it doesn't hurt to update them. If it is, then email the school to check. If a school explicitly tells you they want to see your Spring grades.... well you have a 3.9+ gpa; I'll let you decide if you should listen to them or not 😉
